Chapter 821: Did you go to hold back on writing more chapters?
Chang Kun stood at the entrance of the main room and glanced around at the people in the courtyard.
The tables were almost full. Relatives sat at the table on the east side, neighbors at the table on the west side, and colleagues from the security brigade squeezed into the table near the gate.
He walked over and invited a few people to sit down. Then he turned around and glanced at the kitchen door. His second aunt was serving dishes, and Liu Meifen was handing her bowls.
Just as he was about to call out "Serve the food," two people entered through the courtyard gate.
Qu Hun's elder brother, Zhang Buxiao, walked in front, followed by his sister-in-law, Fu Dimo.
Fu Dimo, all smiles, raised her voice as soon as she entered, "Oh dear, I'm late, I'm late!"
"My mother wasn't feeling well this morning, so I took her to see the doctor. That's why I'm back. Please don't mind."
Behind her were three unfamiliar people, two men and one woman, all dressed neatly and smiling, who walked into the courtyard one after another.
No one paid her any attention; everyone was busy with their own things. The people at the tables in the courtyard glanced up at her, then went back to talking to themselves.
Chang Kun had anticipated this, and his expression remained unchanged. He took two steps forward to greet them, saying, "It's good that you're here. Please have a seat. There's just one more table available."
He stepped aside and led Fu Dimo and her family to the table at the far end of the courtyard. The table was placed against the wall, with two bundles of firewood piled at the corner. It was in a remote location, farthest from the kitchen.
Fu Dimo's smile froze for a moment: "Why is this table set up so off to the side? It's right next to the woodpile."
Chang Kun gave a forced smile: "The tables in front are all full, this one is empty."
"Sister-in-law, please have a seat with your family. The dishes will be served shortly."
He turned and walked towards the kitchen without looking back.
Zhang Buxiao stood by the table, her face expressionless, and pulled up a chair to sit down.
Fu Dimo opened her mouth, glanced at the tables next to her that were already full, but didn't say anything more and sat down.
The three family members she brought with her also took their seats one by one, their lips slightly twitching, their smiles becoming a little fainter than before.
Entering the kitchen, his second aunt was loading food onto plates. She glanced at Chang Kun and asked, "What about the dishes on that table?"
Chang Kun: "Go as we agreed last night."
His aunt glanced at him, nodded, and muttered under her breath, "That's how it should be! Let them eat nothing!!"
Chang Kun stood at the kitchen door, watching his second aunt serve the dishes.
The first round of dishes served were cold dishes: shredded radish salad, pickled cabbage, and smashed cucumber. One dish was served to each table first.
Then the hot dishes were served: braised pork with vermicelli, scrambled eggs, cabbage and tofu soup, and braised pork ribs with radish.
There were four dishes per table, and the amount of meat wasn't much, but it was considered decent at this time of year.
The security team's table had already started pouring drinks, and the bowls and chopsticks were clattering loudly.
Xiuer and the other girls used chopsticks to poke at the cucumber slices in their bowls and put them in their mouths.
Chang Kun asked his second aunt to serve the last table as well.
A cold dish, a bowl of cabbage and tofu soup, plus a wild vegetable dumpling for each person.
Fu Dimo sat for a while, looking at the bowl of vegetarian soup on the table, and then scanned the area under the table, but didn't see any other plates or bowls.
Her family members looked at her, then grabbed some cabbage and tofu and drank it first.
After waiting a short while, the next few tables started serving their second round of braised pork. The pork was served glistening with oil, looking very appealing, and everyone reached for it with their chopsticks.
Fu Dimo's table still had the same few things: the wild vegetable dumplings were cold, and a few cabbage leaves were floating in the soup bowl.
Fu Dimo finally couldn't hold back and turned to call out to Chang Kun, who was passing by carrying dishes.
"Xiao Kun, why hasn't our table had any meat yet? All the other tables have already started eating."
Chang Kun stopped, a slight smirk playing on his lips, and glanced at Fu Dimo: "Sister-in-law, didn't I tell you to take the meat back to your parents' house yesterday?"
"That's all the food we have on the stove today; we can't distribute it evenly."
His voice was quite loud, and several people at the nearby tables heard him, slowed their chopsticks, and looked up in his direction.
Fu Dimo's face flushed red, her lips moved slightly, and the three family members next to her also stopped eating and looked at each other.
Zhang Buxiao, who was sitting next to her, lowered her head and took a sip of soup, not daring to look up.
Fu Dimo opened her mouth, wanting to throw a tantrum, but looking at the tables around her, where relatives and neighbors were sitting, she ultimately had to save face and didn't say anything more.
He picked up the cabbage and tofu soup, took a big gulp, put down the bowl, and his face remained dark the whole time.
She lowered her head, poked at the rim of the bowl with her chopsticks, and felt a surge of anger rising within her.
Is it really worth all this fuss over just bringing some meat back to her parents' home?
When she married into the Zhang family, wasn't she the one who took care of everything?
She did all sorts of work – cooking, farming, and serving her father-in-law.
Taking a few pieces of meat back to her parents' home caused such a commotion, and she even brought it up at the banquet in front of so many people.
The neighbors and relatives at the next table all heard it. How can they face others after this?
We can't just let this go!
She glanced at the door of the east room; the bride was sitting inside, not yet having come out to eat. She would definitely come out to toast the guests later.
When the time comes, as the sister-in-law, I'll have plenty of opportunities to embarrass the bride.
Let her know who's in charge once she's in this house.
Chang Kun stood at the kitchen door for a while, and was somewhat surprised to see that Fu Dimo didn't say anything more.
This woman is usually quite dramatic, but she shut up so easily today; something's not right.
I glanced over there again and noticed that she had her head down, but her eyes kept glancing toward the east room, and she kept muttering to herself, as if she was plotting something.
Chang Kun felt uneasy, turned around and walked to Cheng Min's side, whispering in her ear, "Keep an eye on Fu Dimo later, she's acting strange. I suspect she's trying to cause trouble during the toasts."
"Keep a close eye on her, don't let her ruin the wedding banquet."
Following Chang Kun's gaze, Cheng Min glanced in Fu Dimo's direction and nodded: "Okay, I'm watching."
After finishing his work in the kitchen, Chang Kun picked up the wine jug and began pouring wine from table to table.
The table at the security brigade was the liveliest. Brigade leader He Gangyi stood up with a bowl in his hand and said, "Chang Kun, you've done a great job as a host. You've been running around all morning without even having a sip of wine. Come, come, let me toast you first."
Chang Kun filled his cup: "Why are you toasting me? The groom is over there today, go toast him."
"The groom will be toasted later, but first we'll toast you. If it weren't for you, Qu Hun's wedding banquet wouldn't have been so successful."
Several people nearby joined in the commotion, and Chang Kun clinked bowls with them before tilting his head back and drinking.
Several elderly relatives were sitting at the table at the east end of the village, and one of them was tugging at Chang Kun's sleeve.
"Xiao Kun, the well you built for our village has been a huge help."
"Every few days, we'd catch a few fish from the well. They might not taste as good as meat, but they're still considered meat."
Someone nearby chimed in, "And that batch of grain from a while ago—if it weren't for your help in arranging it, several families in the village would have gone hungry."
Chang Kun waved his hand: "Don't praise me. The well was dug by everyone, and I just happened to help with the grain."
Before the old men could say anything more, Chang Kun saw Xiao Cui come out and prepared to offer her a toast.
In the distance, Fu Dimo watched coldly, a sinister smile on his face.
