There was no one else at home. Cheng Min had gone to her parents' house. Chang Kun ate some noodles after getting off the bus and then went out to work.

Since I'm free anyway, I might as well go take a look. I haven't been to the office for two days, so I don't want to miss anything.

As soon as I entered the company gate, I heard a commotion inside, the noise coming from the direction of the cafeteria, like a hornet's nest had been stirred up.

Chang Kun quickened his pace and walked over. A crowd had gathered at the entrance of the canteen, three or four layers deep. Some people were arguing, some were cursing, and some were watching the show with enamel mugs in their hands.

"Gone? What do you mean gone? Two pig legs, dozens of kilograms of meat, can they grow legs and run away on their own?" Sister Wu's voice was the loudest, and could be heard across half the corridor.

Aunt Song chimed in from the side, "Pork doesn't have legs, but people do! Not only do they have legs, but they also have hands! Isn't that obvious?"

People nearby joined in the commotion, chattering amongst themselves.

"I knew it! The wild vegetable porridge I drank the other day made me see stars. I was so looking forward to some meat, but I didn't even see a single star."

"You're still hoping for this? I haven't even smelled the meat yet!"

Monkey King squeezed through the crowd and shouted, "Master Li, tell me again, when did the meat disappear?"

Master Li stood by the stove, his hands outstretched, his face full of grievance and innocence.

"I checked on it before leaving get off work yesterday, and both legs were hanging on the shelf, perfectly fine. This morning when I came in, the shelf was empty. I thought Ma Wencai had someone move it, so I went to ask him, but he said he didn't know and told me to look for it myself. Where am I supposed to look?"

He got angrier and angrier as he spoke, and his voice rose.

"Everyone, be the judge. We haven't smelled meat for days, and he just says he doesn't know and that's it."

Xiao Yu squeezed through the crowd from the back, stood on tiptoe to peek inside, and shouted a question.

"Where's Ma Wencai? Where's that grandson of a man?"

Someone pointed to a corner: "There it is, huddled up."

Ma Wencai huddled on a stool in the corner of the cafeteria, with several colleagues who had come in with him standing next to him, all of whom looked rather grim.

Monkey King walked over, put his hands in his pockets, and glared at him fiercely.

"Ma Wencai, where did those two pig legs go? Did you eat them both?"

Ma Wencai raised his head, his eyes darting around behind his glasses for a long time before finally managing to squeeze out a sentence.

"I don't know... You're asking me? Who am I supposed to ask?"

"I'm asking you!" Monkey King said. "Section Chief Sima put you in charge of the slush fund. You were the one who approved the permits and arranged for the meat to be bought. If you don't know, who does?"

Ma Wencai's face flushed red and then turned pale, and fine beads of sweat began to appear on his forehead.

Someone stood up to speak for him; he was transferred at the same time as Ma Wencai, in his early thirties, and spoke politely.

"Everyone, calm down. The matter hasn't been investigated clearly yet, so we can't wrongly accuse anyone. Maybe the meat is somewhere else; let's look again."

Before he could finish speaking, someone in the crowd retorted.

"I've looked! There's nothing there! Why don't you try looking inside the rat hole?"

It was Xiao Lü who spoke, and his tone was very aggressive.

The man was speechless and dared not utter a sound.

Sister Wu spoke up again, "Where's the section chief? Is he even here? Someone has to take care of this, right?"

Aunt Song chimed in, "Section Chief went to a meeting. He left early this morning and hasn't come back yet."

Sister Wu snorted: "A meeting? Perfect timing."

These words were quite meaningful, and the people next to him exchanged glances, but no one responded.

I've seen people steal from their posts; it's common for them to take some oil, salt, soy sauce, vinegar, potatoes, and sweet potatoes home.

Stealing two whole pig legs at once is just too outrageous.

Ma Wencai had just arrived at the unit when the new section chief appointed him to manage the unit's slush fund. He had the key, and if anything went missing, it was almost certain that he was the one who did it.

"Investigate! This must be thoroughly investigated!"

"Yes! There's so much stuff in our secret stash, and maybe even more is missing!"

Surrounded by people, Ma Wencai's face flushed red and then turned pale, and beads of sweat trickled down his nose.

He pushed up his glasses, cleared his throat, and tried to appear calm.

"What...what right do you have to inspect the unit's slush fund? This is a matter for the section, it's none of your business to cause trouble here!"

Chang Kun had sensed it as soon as he entered the door. Ma Wencai was flashing red light all over his body. This was not the reaction one would expect from someone who had stolen two pig legs. This bastard was probably involved in more than just this one thing.

Pushing through the crowd, Ma Wencai saw him, his expression changed instantly, and his lips trembled slightly.

"Ma Wencai, I haven't settled the score with you at the radio station the other day, and now you're stealing meat from the company again! You're a real scoundrel!"

"Two pig legs, stolen from the company's rations? You must be crazy!"

Ma Wencai stiffened his neck and raised his voice: "You, you're slandering me! Who stole the meat? What evidence do you have? I'm warning you, falsely accusing others comes at a price!"

Chang Kun chuckled and waved at him.

"Come here, and I'll tell you what the price is."

Ma Wencai shrank back; he dared not approach, having been beaten up the day before yesterday.

*Smack!*

Chang Kun wasn't going to tolerate him. He slapped him across the face, the sound crisp and loud.

Ma Wencai's head tilted to one side, his glasses were askew and hanging on his nose. He staggered back a few steps before regaining his balance.

The entire cafeteria fell silent for a moment; all the noisy sounds disappeared.

Ma Wencai covered his face, his eyes wide, and it took him two seconds to react. His voice even changed tone.

"You...how dare you hit me?! You dare hit me?! I'm calling the police! I'm going to call the police right now!"

Chang Kun didn't stop him, and after a few seconds he slowly spoke.

"Reporting to the police is perfect. Let the officers investigate how those two pig legs sprouted wings and flew away. Dozens of pounds of meat vanished without a trace; there needs to be an explanation!"

They are railway police; if something inside has been stolen, it's most appropriate to have another police force handle it.

Ma Wencai suddenly stopped, looked up at Chang Kun, and his eyes behind his glasses were filled with terror.

The people around them exchanged glances and whispered among themselves, and the buzzing started again.

Monkey King leaned against the wall, arms crossed, a slight smirk playing on his lips. Xiao Lü and Xiao Yu exchanged a glance, neither speaking.

Seeing his cowardly appearance, Chang Kun continued, "You even dare to steal your colleagues' rations, so you must have lost quite a bit from your slush fund, right? Perfect, let's check it together today and reconcile the accounts."

These words caused an uproar in the cafeteria.

Sister Wu was the first to cheer: "Yes! Investigate! Investigate today! See exactly how much is missing!"

Aunt Song nodded in agreement: "It should be investigated. A thief has appeared in the workplace; we must find him."

Monkey King took a step forward: "Brother Kun is right! The accounts in the slush fund should have been cleared long ago."

"When Section Chief Zhang was in charge, every transaction was posted out, so everyone knew what was going on."

"And now? Who's seen the ledger?!"
