Chapter 624 Lu Weidong! You're a real beast!
When Ye Wenxi arrived at the military region, instead of going home first, she went to the service center and bought a lot of dishes that Lu Weidong liked to eat.
She pushed open the door and entered the house carrying two large bags of things. A warm feeling wafted over her, mixed with the faint scent of laundry detergent.
After being away for almost half a month, the house is still the same as before: clean and cozy.
The snow on the first-floor balcony courtyard was swept to a corner and piled up into a small mound.
Ye Wenxi put down her things, picked up the phone, and dialed Lu Weidong's office.
The phone rang several times, but no one answered.
She hung up the phone, guessing he was in a meeting.
So he got up and went to the kitchen to clean the fish, chop the chicken, and prepare the food.
At 5:30 p.m., she dialed again, thinking that he should have answered by now.
Still no one answered.
Ye Wenxi hung up the phone and dialed Wang Hao's office number.
It rang once and was then answered.
"Feed? Wang Hao, it's me, Wenxi."
"Sister-in-law! What's up?"
"Is Weidong at the military region today? I called him twice but he didn't answer. He should be back by this time normally after get off work. Do you know what's wrong with him?"
"Dong-ge isn't here. He's on an emergency mission and has been gone for two days. Didn't he tell you?"
Ye Wenxi was taken aback: "We haven't talked on the phone for the past two days. Where did he go?"
"A nearby grain depot had its roof collapsed under the weight of the snow, burying people underneath. Brother Dong led a team to carry out rescue operations."
"When will he be back?"
"Oh, that's hard to say, it depends on how things go on site. How about I try to find out for you?"
"Forget it, don't bother."
Ye Wenxi hung up the phone.
It's best not to disturb him when he's out on a mission; he'll naturally come back once he's finished.
She looked at the food that had already been prepared on the table, sighed, and sat down on the sofa.
Time passed little by little.
It was past 8 p.m., and Lu Weidong still hadn't returned; the food had gone cold.
Around 10 p.m., Ye Wenxi leaned against the sofa, her eyelids heavy, and drifted off to sleep.
A military green jeep drove along the highway, its headlights cutting through the night and illuminating the bare branches of the poplar trees lining the road.
Lu Weidong sat in the jeep on the way back, with Battalion Commander Zhou sitting next to him. Both of them looked tired.
"This year's snow is really strange. I haven't seen snow like this in decades." Zhou Zhenhua rubbed his hands together. "The meteorological bureau said that the snowfall this winter is likely to break records, and we'll be busy for a while."
Lu Weidong grunted in agreement: "Have each company take another inventory of their rescue equipment. Snow shovels, crowbars, ropes, stretchers—report what's missing tonight. We'll review it regularly to ensure supplies are in place for emergency missions."
"Yes."
"Also," Lu Weidong turned to look out the window at the vast expanse of white, "we need to adjust our training strategy, schedule breaks between high-intensity training sessions, and ensure that the soldiers take turns resting. In this kind of weather, someone needs to step in at any time."
"Yes." Battalion Commander Zhou nodded.
Lu Weidong leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes.
I haven't slept for two days and two nights.
The rescue operation was carried out after the roof of a nearby grain depot collapsed under the weight of snow, burying three workers on night shift.
Lu Weidong was stationed at the temporary command post, coordinating with the local government to use bulldozers while keeping an eye on the messages coming back from the front lines.
The wind and snow continued, and visibility was less than ten meters. The soldiers took turns working, breaking several crowbars in the process.
Snow and mud poured into the boots, fingers were frozen stiff, and the crowbar felt like it was covered in ice.
Three people were dug out, but unfortunately one of them was already dead.
Such emergency deployments are commonplace for the stationed troops.
Snow disasters cause many casualties every year, especially in remote factories and grain depots. The building materials cannot withstand the thick snow, and the snow is extremely perishable. People buried under the snow can freeze to death overnight in winter.
Being stationed here is the last line of defense.
In years when heavy snow closes the mountains, grain depots collapse, roads are blocked, and herders are trapped, with alarms sounding at any moment.
The people are hoping the snow will stop; they're hoping the snow won't bury them.
Lu Weidong raised his watch and glanced at the time. He inadvertently noticed the date—November 2nd.
He sat up abruptly.
"Drive faster."
The driver glanced at him in the rearview mirror: "Yes, Chief of Staff."
Although he hadn't contacted Ye Wenxi, Lu Weidong's intuition told him that she was waiting for him on this day.
An hour later...
The jeep pulled up to Lu Weidong's building, and Lu Weidong got out and quickly walked into the building.
As the key was inserted into the lock and turned, a warm yellow light shone through the crack in the door.
He smiled slightly.
Pushing open the door, Ye Wenxi's shoes were placed by the door.
Lu Weidong leaned inside and saw a table full of dishes. Ye Wenxi was curled up on the sofa, fast asleep.
He quickly took off his coat, which was still covered in mud, but he didn't bother to wipe it off. He walked to the sofa, squatted down, and gently stroked her face.
"Wenxi?" he called softly.
Ye Wenxi frowned slightly and slowly opened her eyes.
I saw Lu Weidong's handsome and rugged face, but it looked a little haggard.
"You're back." She smiled instantly and subconsciously glanced at her watch—it was ten minutes to twelve.
"Oh dear!" She sat up abruptly and paced around the room.
"Where's the gift, where's the gift..." she muttered, running to the canvas bag on the counter by the door to take out her birthday present, then rushing to the kitchen and carrying out a plate.
It was an extremely crude homemade cake.
The bottom layer is a piece of steamed rice cake, cut into a circle, topped with a few orange segments, crookedly arranged to form the shape of a flower. It looks like a masterpiece from a child's game of make-believe.
Lu Weidong stood still, watching with a smile as she scurried around the room like a startled rabbit.
What are you doing?
"Don't laugh!" Ye Wenxi glared at him, put the cake on the table, and then took out a red candle from the drawer.
The candle was too thick to fit into the cake, so she stood it next to the plate and lit it with a match.
"Quick, make a wish."
Lu Weidong walked over and looked down at the comical little cake with a big red candle.
"Want to blow it?" he asked.
"Make a wish first, but don't say it out loud, otherwise it won't come true. After you've made your wish, just blow it out."
Lu Weidong sat down, closed his eyes, and a smile still played on his lips.
He made a wish and blew out the candle.
Upon opening her eyes, Ye Wenxi began softly singing, "Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you..."
Lu Weidong watched her sing the whole song with a smile.
Ye Wenxi leaned in and puckered her lips to kiss him: "Happy birthday, Weidong. Are you happy?"
Lu Weidong nodded: "I'm so happy."
"Pah, pah, pah! You can't say 'death' on your birthday." Ye Wenxi glared at him.
Ye Wenxi pulled Lu Weidong up and helped him unbutton his military shirt: "Go take a bath first, I'll heat up the food."
"Together?" Lu Weidong's voice was deep and magnetic.
"Aren't you tired? You're so tired, yet you still have to do that?" Ye Wenxi looked at him in disbelief.
"I said let's take a shower together... what are you talking about?" Lu Weidong looked at her with a serious expression.
"Hmph! I don't know." Ye Wenxi pouted and glared at him before turning to go to the kitchen.
Lu Weidong scooped her up in his arms and carried her to the bathroom: "Don't know? Then let me show you."
"Hey Lu Weidong! You're such an animal!" Ye Wenxi kicked her leg in his arms, and one of her slippers fell off.
Lu Weidong laughed smugly, carried her into the bathroom, and closed the door with his foot.
