Chapter 540: Why isn't Xiaoxue coming?
Lu Weidong recognized the two voices outside the door all too well; one was his wife, and the other was Su Feng.
"The matter of finding Xiao Jun to train..." Lu Weidong muttered to himself, his brows furrowing deeper and deeper, "He didn't even tell me."
"Field training, physical conditioning. Don't worry, I've left someone to follow him." Su Feng glanced at his watch. "He should be back in another hour or so."
Ye Wenxi: "Oh, thank you so much. You're so busy with training, and you still have to take care of our Xiaojun."
Su Feng: "It's alright, no trouble at all. This is what I promised Xiaojun. He achieved that result, and I can't break our agreement."
Ye Wenxi: "How's Xiaojun's training? Is it tough?"
Su Feng: "Hehe... To be honest, I've never seen anyone with such talent. He was born to be a special forces soldier."
..............
Ye Wenxi and Su Feng chatted with Xiao Jun for a while at the door, talking about his talent and perseverance.
Inside the door, Lu Weidong heard Ye Wenxi's words, listened to Su Feng's slightly amused response, and heard the two chatting enthusiastically.
Chief of Staff Lu frowned...
Footsteps sounded outside the door, followed by knocking.
Lu Weidong flung open the door, but immediately regretted it.
Ye Wenxi's hand froze on the spot as she watched Lu Weidong open the door in a flash.
Su Feng, who had just turned around to go back to his office, froze in place, staring at him who had suddenly appeared.
Su Feng: "........."
Ye Wenxi: "........."
"Hey? I was just about to leave to go home... why are you here?" Lu Weidong was still trying to make amends.
Ye Wenxi rolled her eyes: "Let's go home."
"Oh..." Lu Weidong turned around to pick up his military cap, tidied up the things on the table, picked up his briefcase, and then went out and locked the door.
Su Feng, who was standing at the door, had already returned to his office, and he had carried the watermelon inside.
"Hehe, let's go." Lu Weidong chuckled and followed Ye Wenxi outside.
When they got downstairs, Lu Weidong looked at Ye Wenxi's bicycle.
"You came by bike? How come you have a watermelon too?"
Ye Wenxi turned to look at Lu Weidong: "I came to bring you melons. Since you like melons so much, here you go."
Ye Wenxi picked up the watermelon and handed it to Lu Weidong.
She got on her bicycle and rode back.
"Hey? Honey, wait for me!...Wenxi? Wenxi..."
*Click!*
Suddenly, a loud clap of thunder sounded in the sky.
A few dark clouds drifted in from the west; before the rain even started, thunder roared.
Lu Weidong wanted to chase after her; to be honest, he could easily catch up with Ye Wenxi while carrying that big watermelon.
But it was rush hour, and the streets were bustling with people. It was a bit embarrassing for a regimental-level officer to be chasing after his wife on a bicycle while carrying a watermelon.
To pursue or not to pursue?
"Where are you going? Home or to the cafeteria?" He yelled twice at Ye Wenxi's retreating figure on her bicycle.
Ye Wenxi squeezed the brake, turned her head slightly, and called out to the back, "Go to Mom and Dad's."
"Okay, got it." Lu Weidong grinned.
At Lu Zhenghua's home, the elderly couple were just about to start their meal when they heard a knock on the door.
"Oh dear, these two are here." Lu Zhenghua put down his chopsticks and gesturing to Liu Xiuyun, "Go quickly and reheat the food in the refrigerator."
He got up to open the door.
Lu Weidong, who was carrying a watermelon, caught up with him as he ran and stumbled.
Just as Ye Wenxi was about to close the door, Lu Weidong blocked it with one foot.
"Why are you running?"
"Let's get some exercise." Lu Weidong squeezed through the door carrying a watermelon. "Dad, watermelon."
"Wow, this is a big surprise." Lu Zhenghua took it.
"Dad, Mom, we'll just grab whatever we can get, don't bother." Ye Wenxi changed her shoes and went inside.
"It's alright, it's ready-made, and it'll be quick." Liu Xiuyun had already entered the kitchen.
"Has Wei Hua not returned yet?" Ye Wenxi put down her bag, went into the bathroom to wash her hands, and came out to ask.
"She said she had to work overtime, doing some kind of experiment," Liu Xiuyun muttered in the kitchen. "I don't even know if she'll get to eat. I said I'd bring her some later, but Lao Lu absolutely refused."
Lu Zhenghua sat back down at the table, picked up his chopsticks, then put them down again: "It's all because they're spoiled. What's wrong with missing a meal? Back in our day, we wouldn't eat more than a few bites every few days or weeks, just filling our stomachs with fried noodles. In basic training, each of us would have a handful of fried noodles and swallow them with snow."
"That fried noodles were made from ground mixed grains. Sometimes there wasn't even any snow in them, so they were just dry and hard to swallow."
He picked up his teacup and took a sip, as if savoring those days.
Ye Wenxi looked at Lu Zhenghua earnestly: "Dad, the hardships you endured back then are something our generation can't even imagine. The good life we have now was earned by your generation through their hard work and sacrifice. So I have to finish this meal completely, not a single grain of rice can be left."
Lu Zhenghua burst into laughter.
"Oh, right, Mom," Ye Wenxi said, "I just ran into Section Chief Su. He said Xiao Jun is training outside and will probably be back a little late. He's with someone, so it shouldn't be a problem."
"Oh, so that's where the kid's been." Liu Xiuyun poked her head out from the kitchen. "Okay, never mind him then, let's eat first. I'll heat it up for him when he gets back."
Liu Xiuyun heated up a few more steamed buns, picked out some pickles, and stir-fried an egg and potato slices. The four of them then sat around the small table and ate dinner.
Ye Wenxi only took a quarter of the watermelon with him, leaving the rest in the refrigerator for the elderly couple.
When I went out, it was already raining heavily.
Ye Wenxi and Lu Weidong stumbled and staggered a few steps, but luckily they were close by, only two building entrances away.
After arriving home, Ye Wenxi put the watermelon in the refrigerator.
As usual, Lu Weidong went to the bathroom immediately to flush and boil water...
Ye Wenxi glanced at her watch; it was almost seven o'clock.
Xiaoxue should be back by now, right? She was a little worried.
Aside from calling on the first night, Wang Yingxue hasn't contacted me at all yesterday and today.
She pulled out her phone book and dialed the guesthouse's number.
"Hello, this is Ye Wenxi from Wenxi Garment Company. We have an employee named Wang Yingxue who should be staying here. Could you please help me find Ms. Wang Yingxue?"
After a few minutes, the phone was picked up.
"Hello, Xiaoxue?"
The voice coming from the other end wasn't Wang Yingxue's.
"Wenxi, I'm Aunt Huang."
"Aunt Huang? Where's Xiaoxue? Is Xiaoxue alright?" Ye Wenxi's first thought was that something was wrong with Wang Yingxue's health.
"Oh...Xiaoxue...she went to take a bath," Aunt Huang stammered.
"Wenxi, we've finished the statistics and reviewed everything. Should I tell you now, or wait until we get back to discuss it face-to-face?"
"Tell me the general outline first, and I'll see if there's anything that needs adjusting or adding," Ye Wenxi said.
"Okay, wait a minute, I'll go get the notebook we used to take notes."
Two minutes later, she returned and heard the rustling sound of papers turning over in the receiver.
Aunt Liang began reading from the notebook. Ye Wenxi could tell that Wang Yingxue had done some preliminary work on the data.
Over three days, Wang Yingxue and Aunt Liang visited two popular streets in Harbin, collecting data on pedestrian traffic at different times and comparing more than ten shops.
The conclusion is clear: the later venues either lacked sufficient space or were located in areas with lower foot traffic than the earlier ones, while the first auditorium was the best in every aspect.
Holding the receiver, Ye Wenxi had already decided that the first physical store of Wenxi Clothing Company would be located in that auditorium.
"Aunt Huang, okay, then you two can come back tomorrow. We can discuss the details when we meet."
"Okay..." Aunt Liang responded, then paused, her voice suddenly becoming hesitant, "But Wenxi, Xiaoxue told me something today."
Ye Wenxi frowned slightly: "What is it?"
Aunt Huang hesitated for a moment on the other end of the phone, as if she didn't know how to start: "She said... she has some things to do over the weekend, and she'll go back a couple of days later."
Ye Wenxi was taken aback. Xiaoxue wasn't coming back?
