Chapter 176 Sharp Blade Squad
"In other words, we have absolutely no idea how many enemies there are, what they look like, or where they're headed next." Yue Sheng's tone turned serious as his gaze fell on the two hundred-plus red dots on the screen. "Are we just going to find a needle in a haystack with these two hundred-plus names?"
"What else can we do?" Han Qiming gave a bitter smile, leaned forward, and tapped the report on the table about Li Rui's incident with his fingertip. "You know about Li Rui's situation, right? He's a key member of the Special Investigation Bureau, a veteran detective with more than ten years of experience, and now he doesn't even know his own identity."
"The Grand Censorate suffered from the lack of coordination among local authorities, which is why it decided to establish this General Administration for vertical management and directly transfer your Sharp Blade Brigade here. Right now, Sharp Blade is our only remaining weapon. If you also fall, I'll truly be left with no one to command."
Yue Sheng didn't reply; he just stared at the discharge waveform on the screen.
He had fought for fifteen years, dealing with counter-terrorism and chemical plant explosions. He had seen all sorts of dangerous situations, but those opponents at least had guns, and he could calculate the power of artillery.
But now they are facing superhuman beings who can generate electricity out of thin air and make plants grow wildly, so almost all of their previous combat experience is useless.
"I've read all your combat reports." Han Qiming looked at him, his tone sincere. "During the counter-terrorism operation, you led fifteen men into the combat zone and killed all the enemies; when the chemical plant exploded, you knew there was toxic gas leaking inside, but you still led your men in to shut off the valves."
"Headquarters chose you as the captain of the Sharp Blade team because you are good at fighting these kinds of unknown battles. We don't trust anyone else to do it."
"In previous battles, at least we knew where the enemy was and what weapons they were carrying," Yue Sheng finally spoke, pointing to the waveform on the screen. "We've never even seen this before, how are we supposed to fight it?"
"Our team simulated the Han Xiao and Li Rui case hundreds of times before, revising the plan dozens of times, including how to approach, how to suppress, and how to prevent backlash. But when we actually got to the scene, who knew what unexpected things might happen?"
"That's why I had you sit here and wait with me." Han Qiming sighed. "Next time he makes a move, the monitoring station will be able to locate him immediately. You lead the team to rush over then. If you can catch him, do so. If you can't catch him, at least figure out the limits of his abilities. We can't always wait until he kills people and runs away before we have to clean up the mess."
Kobayashi promptly pulled up the list of over two hundred people. The red dots on the map were dazzlingly bright. "We have identified thirty-eight key individuals for protection, all of whom were core participants in the project back then."
"For example, we have notified the local police to increase patrols and have also reminded these people to be careful. But to be honest, these regular police forces are no match for Liu Zhen. If he really wants to make a move, no amount of force can stop him."
"Why didn't you let my men stake out the location beforehand?" Yue Sheng asked.
"You only have three hundred men," Han Qiming shrugged. "Divided into thirty-eight locations across three cities, each location can only hold a maximum of seven or eight men. And who knows when he'll make his move? Can your men hold out for a month? Two months?"
"We can't just do nothing and watch over these people all day, can we? Besides, you know Liu Zhen's capabilities. If a fight really breaks out, seven or eight people are not enough. It would only cause unnecessary casualties."
Yue Sheng fell silent.
Having led troops for so many years, what he values most is the lives of his men. Even knowing that going there would be suicide, he would never let his men do it.
"So we're just waiting for him to kill someone." His tone was cold, and you could tell he was suppressing his temper.
"Yes." Han Qiming didn't evade the question and nodded. "Wait for him to make a move, wait for the monitoring station to pinpoint his location, and then you lead the team to rush over. Most of the time, by the time you get there, the man is already dead, and the scene is cold, just like this time at Jingyuan Villa."
"That's how Jingyuan Manor is." Yue Sheng's fingers cracked as he clenched them. He'd been a soldier for so many years, always taking the initiative, never passively waiting to be killed like this. "We know he's seeking revenge, we know the next victim is among these two hundred-odd people, yet we can't do anything but wait for him to make his move?"
"What else can we do?" Han Qiming's tone was also helpless. "There are more than two hundred people on the list, spread across three cities. We don't even know who his next target is. Even if we deploy all our weapons, we can only hold one or two people at each point. Can that stop an Avenger who can generate electricity?"
"Not to mention that many of these people are provincial officials and well-known entrepreneurs. Without solid evidence, how can we convince them to cooperate in protecting us? We can't just forcibly detain them, can we?"
The command center fell silent, with only the low hum of the servers running.
Yue Sheng stood up, walked to the window, and turned his back to the two of them.
Outside the window, the night was deep and dark, without a single star. The streetlights in the distance cast a dim yellow glow on the street, and occasionally a car would drive by, leaving a long trail of light.
"Our team conducts simulations twice a week, going over and over all the previous cases involving superhumans." His voice came back through the glass window, sounding somewhat muffled. "How to approach, how to suppress, how to retreat, how to prevent memetic contamination—we've simulated it hundreds of times. Even the plan with the lowest casualty rate still requires sacrificing 30% of our team members. But no matter how well we simulate it, if we can't find the person, it's all for nothing."
He turned around, the scar on his face starkly visible under the light. "Even if the monitoring station locates him immediately next time, it will still take me two hours to get from my post to the nearest city, Zhaoming. In those two hours, how many people can he kill? How far can he run? How thoroughly can he clean up the scene? You and I both know the answer."
Han Qiming didn't speak; he knew better than anyone what this time difference meant.
Superhumans can usually act in just a few seconds, and by the time they arrive, all that's left is an empty scene.
Xiao Lin suddenly spoke up, breaking the silence, "Director, Captain Yue, there's another situation. We've detected that Song Mingzhang, who's not on the list, has been acting a bit strangely lately. He's a close advisor to Wang Hongyuan and has multiple encrypted phone records with Han Dongcheng. Although he's not on the Longteng Project list, he's highly likely one of the participants from back then. He's been staying at Yunyin Villa recently, and there's been construction going on around the villa these past few days, it seems like they're renovating something. The workers are all brought in from out of town, and nobody knows exactly what they're renovating."
"Song Mingzhang?" Han Qiming frowned. "Wang Hongyuan's man?"
"Yes." Xiao Lin nodded and pulled up Song Mingzhang's information. "We can't find any direct connection between him and the Longteng project, but Han Dongcheng's private call records show three calls to Song Mingzhang's encrypted number. The times were the day Zhao Hongtu disappeared, the day Han Dongcheng ordered the renovation of Jingyuan Villa, and three days ago. We suspect that Liu Zhen's next target might be him."
