"Mom, I'm going to school now."
Since the burdens of life have been lightened, Xiao Yulian has become much more lively and punctual for school. Now she even runs into her classmates when she goes out.
"Xiao Lian, you're up so early today? Is your mother better?"
"Okay, you're almost better. You can get out of bed and walk around for a while now."
The children's conversation was simple, quickly shifting to school and playing. Not long after, they arrived at school and, naturally, parted ways since they weren't in the same class.
But as soon as Xiao Yulian reached the classroom door, she sensed something was wrong—the students were staring at her, and some were even secretly laughing behind her back. Reaching her desk, she understood why: the desk and chair were covered in filth, and there were two toads hidden inside the desk. She knew without a doubt that it was Bi Zhenzhu who had teased her that day. Just because she couldn't stand Bi Zhenzhu bullying a quiet classmate, she stood up for her, and that's how the two of them became enemies.
Judging that class was about to start, and to avoid trouble, Xiao Yulian glanced around and could roughly guess who had done it. There were less than ten minutes until class; if she confronted them now, she'd be implicated when the teacher arrived. Weighing the pros and cons, she decided to settle the score after school. However, because she was cleaning her desk, she was two minutes late entering the classroom.
"Yu Lian, where have you been?"
"Teacher, I'm going out to wash the benches."
Although the teacher was slightly displeased, she didn't make things difficult: "Come in and sit down. I'll say it again, students should cooperate with each other. If I catch anyone teasing a classmate, bring your parents to school tomorrow!"
After a brief warning, the teacher began the lesson. Looking at the wet benches and desks, Xiao Yulian was unsure whether to sit down or not.
"Use this to wipe it," said Xiao Huan, who was sitting next to her, taking off her coat. "Don't be shy, I'll wipe it for you."
Before Xiao Yulian could even nod, Xiao Huan started wiping herself with her clothes haphazardly, and soon her dark coat was covered in water stains.
"Thank you, let me help you wash it clean."
"It's okay, you won't be able to tell once it's dry."
The morning passed peacefully until lunchtime. Students who lived some distance from home brought their own lunches to school, and Xiao Yulian did too—this time it wasn't dry, hard coarse grains, but white flour pancakes and scrambled eggs, and even a few pieces of meat left over from yesterday.
"Wow, you're having meat today?"
Xiao Yulian nodded and generously shared two pieces with her deskmate, Xiao Huan. As the two were eating earnestly, trouble struck.
"Hey, little beggar, you actually have meat and eggs to eat today? Did you steal them from somewhere?"
These words made Xiao Yulian realize that her forbearance only made others think she was easy to bully. If her father were still alive, she would have taught those who bullied her a lesson as soon as she entered the classroom. But now her father was gone, and her mother was sick. No one was there to support her, and her sharp and assertive personality was gradually becoming more subdued. But her classmates didn't know that her true nature hadn't changed. Faced with repeated humiliation, Xiao Yulian no longer intended to tolerate it. She immediately slapped the ringleader to the ground, pinned her down, and slapped her incessantly chattering mouth hard.
One lesson was enough; she didn't let the others who had participated in the morning off the hook either. But as the fight went on, a few of them got smarter and joined in. Xiao Yulian was restrained, but she was strong and quickly broke free, pushing aside two or three classmates who had bullied her and giving them a little lesson in the process.
During the mealtime, the classroom descended into chaos. Apart from Yu Lian, who had a few bruises on her face but was beaming with pride, the others looked rather grim. Some were crying, while others glared at Yu Lian with resentment.
"What are you looking at? Don't leave after school if you dare! There are too many chairs and benches in the classroom; not enough for me to unleash my skills. I haven't even used a third of what my dad taught me!"
Just as he was boasting, the teacher walked in and, seeing the mess in the classroom, flew into a rage: "You! You! You! You! All of you, come out here!"
Five or six people, like a caterpillar, took small, quick steps and stood against the wall outside the classroom with their heads down.
"Chen Li, were you the one who started this trouble?! Were you?!"
Judging from the teacher's reaction, this wasn't the first time such a situation had occurred: "Chen Li, you're absolutely out of control! I, the head teacher, can't manage you anymore. Do whatever you want with this child, I'm not teaching him anymore!"
As a teacher who hasn't been at the school long but has already dealt with Chen Li's troubles at least ten times, the parents always try to smooth things over when the teacher calls them in, being incredibly polite. However, behind the scenes, they not only fail to discipline the child but also indulge him. At such a young age, he doesn't even respect his teacher. No matter how much the teacher tries to educate him, the parents secretly contradict him, making any attempt at discipline useless. He usually has some fear of the headmaster; he was eating when he heard a student calling him from afar, so he came over and found he was indeed late.
The director's mind went blank after being yelled at: "Alright, go eat, I'll handle this."
Having watched from beginning to end, He Lin's anger could no longer be described simply as "angry." But he was powerless to help Xiao Yulian, and could only stand by and sulk—no matter how much he flailed his arms, he couldn't hurt the little brat in front of him in the slightest.
"Yu Lian, you come in with me first. Everyone else, stand in line!"
Xiao Yulian felt a tightness in her chest, realizing she had caused trouble for the teacher again. To be fair, the teacher and the headmaster had taken good care of her after learning about her family situation, but unfortunately, there was a troublesome kid in her class named Chen Li who swarmed around her like a fly, making her life miserable.
"Yu Lian, we've been discussing whether you should go to teach under Teacher Qiu in Class Two. Chen Li's parents aren't easy to talk to, and even the headmaster can't help you; their family are government officials."
Xiao Yulian pondered for a moment—giving in wasn't in her nature, but in order not to put the teacher and the headmaster in a difficult position, she nodded and agreed: "Okay, Headmaster, I'll go. I won't cause you any more trouble."
The director looked helpless and distressed: "Good child, don't talk about yourself like that. It's not your fault, but sometimes even if we're right, there's nothing we can do."
Yu Lian didn't ask those people to apologize; she packed her bag and went to Class 2's classroom.
"You can sit here, there's a seat available." Teacher Qiu felt indignant to see the children of martyrs being bullied, but there was nothing she could do—this uncle of Chen Li held the power of life and death over the school; a single word from him could change the school's fate, so he was someone she couldn't afford to offend.
"It's okay, there aren't any bullies in our class. Everyone heard that, no one who isn't from our class is allowed in our classroom. What should we do if someone from our own class bullies us?"
"Get them out! Fight them back!"
Everyone was united in their opinion. The children in Class Two were already a bit older than them, and they were all confident of victory against the younger children.
From initial trepidation to complete integration, Yu Lian only needed a few classes. She discovered that the students in Teacher Qiu's class didn't form cliques, and there was no one who was the leader. Everyone played together, and unequal relationships were rare. Little Yu Lian didn't hold grudges, and now with a relaxed environment and enthusiastic classmates, she quickly became friends with everyone.
On the other hand, the students who were reprimanded had been standing at the door since the beginning, and passersby would laugh at them whenever they saw something. They were scolded again before the teacher let them go after school in the afternoon.
Xiao Yulian was happy before school ended, but her expression became much more serious after school.
She knew those people wouldn't let it go, especially since she had made some harsh remarks that morning...
