Chapter 15 A Pure Heart
Mother Mouse, Baiguo, shielded her two mice behind her, staring intently at Wang Yan, and tentatively said:
"We're so poor we only have these things left. Please take what you need, sir..."
These words left Wang Yan speechless. Did he really look that much like a robber?
"We're not here to steal anything. Your house is too poor; we don't want anything there. However, we need to stay the night. I hope you won't mind, madam?"
Bai Guo was so frightened that she waved her hands frantically, her face turning pale: "No, no... I don't mind! You two can stay here, as long as... as long as you don't make things difficult for us..."
Wang Yan was somewhat speechless, rubbed his temples, and decided he really couldn't be bothered with Bai Guo anymore.
"Wang Yan... if we stay here for the night, won't Sister Zhuohua and the others worry?"
The big fox held Wang Yan's hand, clearly worried. Wang Yan had also thought of this, but could only shake his head.
"There's nothing we can do about worrying. Just to be on the safe side, we can only stay here for one night. We'll get up early tomorrow morning and head back as soon as possible."
He and Yingluo had come out to gather wild vegetables when they suddenly noticed strangers approaching. Naturally, Wang Yan wanted to find out who they were. Only after ruling out that the nest of rats was harmless could Wang Yan feel at ease.
Afterwards, Wang Yan exchanged a few more words with Bai Guo. The little biscuit might say something slightly off, so it would be more convenient to ask the adults directly.
From Bai Guo, Wang Yan learned that Shushu City had been breached by a group of humans half a year ago. Bai Guo had no choice but to flee westward with her three young rat cubs. When Wang Yan asked her how a sickly woman could take care of three children through the night, her answer surprised him.
They slept for half the morning, traveled for half the afternoon, and then carried three baby rats up a tree at night to avoid attacks from strange beasts. They traveled like this for more than a month, stopping and starting, before finally arriving here.
After carefully considering Bai Guo's words, Wang Yan couldn't find anything amiss. He couldn't help but marvel at the greatness of maternal love, which allowed this defenseless rat mother to escape with her three rat pups for so long. However, she had also developed a host of health problems. If she didn't receive some nourishing food, she might really die.
Wang Yan said no more. It was evening, so he took out a set of cotton quilts he had obtained earlier from the warehouse, found a spacious place in the cave, and spread them out. He could share a bed with the big fox tonight.
Then came the problem of dinner. That was easy enough. I had gotten a lot of ready-made food and canned goods from the previous 30 draws. I took out a small bag of bread and two cans of venison, opened them with the can opener on my saber, and instantly, the rich aroma of meat filled the entire cave.
The big fox's eyes lit up, and she grabbed the can of food. Just as she was about to start eating, an untimely voice rang out:
"Gurgle~"
Yingluo looked in the direction of the sound, puzzled, and found that the two mice were staring straight at her—at the bread and canned venison in her hand. For a moment, she was at a loss.
Sensing that something was amiss, Bai Guo hurriedly pulled the two mice into her arms and said:
"Master, Miss, I'm sorry, please eat. Don't take it personally with a child. We'll eat soon too."
The little cake, nestled in its mother's arms, was probably starving. It started whimpering and crying, wiping its eyes as it whispered:
"Mom, I'm so hungry... I haven't eaten for two days..."
As the older sister, Little Biscuit was also hungry, but she pursed her lips tightly to prevent herself from crying.
Upon hearing her older sister cry, the little mouse in her arms, pale and thin from hunger, also began to cry. Bai Guo, unsure what to do, quickly stroked the two children's heads, placed the little mouse in Xiao Binggan's arms, and said to the mice:
"Don't cry, don't cry, Mommy will go outside and find you something to eat."
Seeing the scene before her, Yingluo's ears drooped, and suddenly the fragrant canned food didn't seem so delicious anymore. She turned to look at Wang Yan and whispered:
"Wang Yan...they're so pitiful..."
Wang Yan smiled and gently stroked Yingluo's head: "So, what does Yingluo want to do?"
Yingluo put down the can, clenched her two small fists, and tentatively answered Wang Yan:
"Or I could give them my dinner; they're so pitiful."
Wang Yan shook his head slightly, then patted her shoulder: "You don't need to ask for my opinion, you can do whatever you want."
The big fox's eyes seemed to light up, and it subconsciously leaned in and kissed Wang Yan's cheek with its pink lips, leaving Wang Yan somewhat stunned.
Yingluo's favorability +10
"Here, you can have this. Don't go out."
The mice seemed incredulous as they handed over the canned food and bread, as if they were still trying to confirm whether they were being spoken to.
Yingluo stepped forward and handed the canned food and bread to Baiguo: "Here, this is for you. It's almost evening, so don't go out anymore."
Ginkgo didn't seem particularly happy; instead, she was instinctively at a loss for what to do.
She pushed the things back, saying, "How can you do this? Take them back quickly. There are plenty of wild vegetables outside... we'll have something to eat..."
Because of the long-term accumulation of lesions, Baiguo had long lost the ability to go out and forage for food. Even walking was difficult for her. The family relied entirely on the two mice to pick some wild fruits to survive. But where were there so many wild fruits? Otherwise, they wouldn't have gone hungry for several days. Because of her lack of nutrition, the baby mouse was so hungry that it cried and had no strength left. What could they possibly have to eat?
Wang Yan watched this scene quietly. He didn't lack food at the moment. With the farm, his food supply was unlimited. He was quite willing to give alms to a family on the verge of ruin. After all, exchanging some food for his sympathy was a great emotional reward.
He was quite glad that his girl was kind and a little silly. Yingluo didn't tell Wang Yan to take out food to give to the family, but instead carefully asked Wang Yan if he could give them his dinner. At that moment, he suddenly realized how much he liked this kind and a little silly fox.
"Idiot, if you give them your dinner, what will you eat?"
Yingluo scratched her head sheepishly and smiled shyly, "Before Wang Yan came, we often couldn't afford to eat. It's no big deal if I miss a meal, hehe."
Wang Yan shook his head helplessly. This silly fox was truly impossible to deal with.
They took out several cans of food from the warehouse, and even a bottle of milk, and put them on the ground.
"Take it."
Looking at the beautifully packaged food she had never seen before on the ground, especially the bottle of milk, Bai Guo finally burst into tears. She stopped refusing and instead pulled the two children along, repeatedly kowtowing to Wang Yan and Yingluo.
