Chapter 45 Bitten by a Snake
Bai Ze sat cross-legged on the ground, casually wiping the sweat from his forehead with his arm. The pile of garlic in front of him made him extremely happy.
We can take them back and dry them; they can last a long time. We can't throw away the vines either, even though they're a bit old, they're still edible.
Bai Ze braced himself with his hands behind his back, thinking that he would call Qing and the others over later to search again. There should be more nearby. It wasn't easy to come all this way, so he should try to dig up as many as possible to take back.
Suddenly, a sharp pain shot through my wrist.
Bai Ze quickly pulled his arm back and looked down to see two holes on the inside of his wrist, from which blood was oozing.
A green thing wriggled its body and quickly disappeared into the grass.
When his gaze fell on the teeth marks on his wrist again, Bai Ze's face turned pale instantly.
Cold sweat beaded on his forehead, his bloodless lips trembled slightly, his heart pounded faster and faster, and Bai Ze felt himself struggling to breathe.
His fear of snakes was unimaginable to others.
That was when Bai Ze was a child, living with his maternal grandparents in an old mud-brick house in the countryside.
One autumn, the adults went to work in the fields early, while he slept in the small house.
A brown snake, as thick as a calf, coiled on the roof beam and pillar. Its skin was covered with black patterns. It silently crawled onto the bed and wrapped its body tightly around Bai Ze.
Bai Ze was jolted awake from his sleep, and when he opened his eyes, he was met with a pair of eerie green eyes and a thin, forked, crimson snake tongue, which almost scared him to death on the spot.
Bai Ze's face was flushed red from being strangled, and he couldn't make a sound. He could only struggle to kick the table on the headboard with his legs.
The noise from the cup falling to the ground attracted the dogs in the yard.
The rural courtyard walls were low and didn't block out sound. When the adults in the neighborhood heard the dog barking, they all ran over, which prevented Bai Ze from being strangled and eaten by the snake.
Later, I heard from the adults that the snake had probably been plotting for many days, waiting for its chance.
Bai Ze felt his legs were a little unresponsive, and it took him several attempts to get up from the ground, albeit shakily.
His mind went blank. He clutched his bitten wrist and walked helplessly toward the sweet potato field, calling out Mo's name unconsciously.
Noticing that Bai Ze was not there, Mo came over to look for him. He breathed a sigh of relief when he heard the voice, but when he saw the person, his heart, which had been at ease, suddenly jumped again.
"What's wrong?" Mo quickly went over to support him. "What happened?"
Bai Ze grasped at a straw, his pale face tilted back, his voice trembling: "Mo, I... I think I was bitten by a snake."
"Bitened by a snake?!" Mo's expression suddenly changed. "Where were you bitten?"
Bai Ze's limbs were ice-cold. He stiffly raised his wrist, filled with fear and unease: "Mo, am I going to die...?"
"Don't talk nonsense." Mo lowered her head and sucked the blood out of his wound.
Bai Ze was in some pain, and he frowned, not daring to move.
After vomiting several mouthfuls of blood, Mo asked with a serious expression, "What did that snake look like?"
"Green, black, is it a poisonous snake?" Bai Ze squatted on the ground, feeling weak in the knees, and felt a little miserable.
"Where does it hurt?" Mo looked closely at Bai Ze. His lips weren't purple, and he was speaking normally. It wasn't a highly venomous snake.
Bai Ze frowned and said, "I feel a little dizzy... and a bit nauseous."
Mo hugged him, her voice unusually gentle: "Don't be afraid, it's alright."
The wound had begun to go numb, but Bai Ze took it as him comforting himself and said intermittently, "Mo, if I... if I die, remember to burn me."
"I don't want to be bitten by insects, nor do I want to be dug out and eaten by other animals."
Mo glared at him, clearly annoyed: "Don't talk nonsense!"
Bai Ze immediately shut up, huddled in Mo's arms, lowered his head, and looked pitiful.
Seeing him like this, Mo immediately regretted it and lowered her voice: "Trust me, I won't let anything happen to you."
There are many kinds of green snakes, and he wasn't sure, so he quickly went to find some experienced snakes to catch them.
The person in my arms fell silent.
Mo called his name anxiously.
Bai Ze's response was muffled.
"What are you doing?" Meng, who had just finished his patrol, happened to see Mo carrying Bai Ze and looking hurried, and asked in surprise.
Bai Ze noticed what he was holding in his hand, his pupils suddenly dilated, and he grabbed Mo's sleeve, hurriedly saying, "That's what it looks like."
"This?" Meng thought he wanted it, so he handed over the snake he had casually caught. "Here, if you want to eat it, I'll have Mo grill it for you tonight."
Bai Ze shrank back in fright.
Mo patted the back of his head to comfort him, then carefully examined the snake in Meng's hand. He suddenly breathed a sigh of relief, and his tense expression eased somewhat.
"This snake isn't very venomous, don't be afraid."
Upon hearing this, Bai Ze blinked: "Really? I won't die?"
Meng then noticed Bai Ze's wrist, which was being covered: "Was bitten by a snake?"
Mo nodded: "Where did you catch the snake?"
Meng pointed to the spot where Bai Ze had just dug up garlic: "Look, over there."
Bai Ze whispered, "Maybe it was it that bit me."
"Then I've avenged you." Meng smiled. "Don't worry, this kind of snake is only mildly venomous. I'll apply some herbal medicine to it for you in a bit, and it'll be fine."
Aside from the pain from the wound and mild dizziness and nausea, there don't seem to be any other symptoms.
With a weight lifted from his heart, Bai Zeren's earlier dejected state vanished. He patted Mo's arm and said, "I can get down and walk by myself."
Mo ignored him and carried Bai Ze to a tree next to the sweet potato field so he could sit and rest.
Qing and Xing, seeing that Bai Ze had been carried back, wondered what had happened and quickly ran over, asking, "What happened?"
"He was bitten by a snake." After settling Bai Ze in, Mo An said to Qing and Xing, "Please look after him while I go get some water."
Qing nodded: "Oh, okay, go ahead."
"Where did it bite you?" Xing asked worriedly, crouching down in front of Bai Ze. "What kind of snake was it? Is it serious?"
"It's nothing, it'll be fine in a bit." Bai Ze felt a little embarrassed thinking about how scared he had been earlier. Now that he knew he wouldn't die, he started to comfort Xing.
Qing examined Bai Ze's wound: "You went to the river?"
Bai Ze shook his head, then remembered where the garlic he had dug up was: "Oh right, I found something good again."
"Alright, rest well since you're injured." Qing brushed a stray hair from his forehead. "In a little while, we'll go dig up the good stuff you found."
When Mo returned, he was carrying two large funnels of water: "Do you still want to throw up?"
Bai Ze shook his head and then nodded.
Mo knelt down and brought the water to his lips: "Drink it all."
Bai Ze asked in surprise, "All of them?"
"Um."
Helpless, Bai Ze had no choice but to chug it down.
Meng also retrieved the herbs, crushed them with a stone, and had Mo apply them to Bai Ze.
He handed the snake over, saying, "Why don't you eat this tonight to help you recover?"
Bai Ze kept shaking his head.
Mo pushed the snake back and said gently, "He doesn't like to eat snake meat."
"That's a pity." Meng waved his hand. "Get back to work!"
