Transmigrating to the Beast World and Raising Cubs with a Black Panther
Chapter 13: Coming to Freeload
It's not easy to get salt. Each member of the tribe receives a limited amount, but it's enough to maintain a normal life.
However, Bai Ze used to share with Bai Qing and the others, and Mo silently let him have his way, so even though they should have been the wealthiest family, Jue lived a miserable life.
After finishing his meal, Mo went to the clan chief's place. When he returned, he had a bag of salt in his hand. He placed it next to the stove and lay down in the spot where Jue had slept, intending to rest for a while.
Bai Ze had just finished delivering the animal hide to Ci with Jue.
When passing by the Qingmen Gate, Bai Ze learned that Ci was an old, solitary sub-beastman in the tribe. His partner had died in an accident a long time ago, and afterwards, people would ask Ci to help with some things and give him some food, which could be considered as helping him a little.
The cave was quiet. As soon as Bai Ze entered, he saw Mo in the corner. Mo's strong and slender body was curled up slightly, facing the stone wall, leaving only a silhouette with a strong sense of line.
Yesterday, he carried the animal hides, along with Jue, into the cave, and now only the straw mat remains.
Mo didn't care, or maybe he was just really tired, and he fell asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow.
Bai Ze felt a little embarrassed, so he turned around, went to his sleeping place, grabbed a beast-skin quilt, and tiptoed over to cover Mo with it.
So far, Bai Ze has a pretty good impression of this beastman. He is quite different from the savage primitive man he had imagined. He is silent but has a reliable and steady demeanor.
There weren't many entertainment options in this world, so Bai Ze was bored in the afternoon. His gaze fell on the animal hides on the shelf, and then he looked down at his own primitive attire. Suddenly, he had the idea to make two sets of clothes to try.
When he was a child, they were poor. Bai Ze's clothes were almost all made by his grandmother, who would cut the fabric in town and bring it back to make them using the old-fashioned sewing machine at home. He often watched from the sidelines.
Bai Ze asked Jue to help him find the bone needles and thread made from animal sinews in the house. He then spread the animal hide on the big stone at the door and pondered how to make clothes while sunbathing.
Holding the charred charcoal, Bai Ze gestured and quickly sketched out the general shape, intending to make a long-sleeved plush coat.
Jue, who was practicing tree climbing nearby, was attracted by Bai Ze's actions and peeked out from the dense branches, curiously looking at her father not far away.
Bai Ze used a stone knife to cut the gray animal hide, and then began to sew it little by little with bone needles and animal sinew thread.
Unlike modern steel needles, he sewed very slowly, and it wasn't until evening that a rough outline was formed.
As darkness fell, Bai Ze glanced at the setting sun, estimated the time, and decided to start preparing dinner first.
Mo was still asleep, and was covered by animal skin blankets, so only the back of his head was visible.
Bai Ze chopped off the ribs from the Hengheng beast meat he had divided up today, cut them into small pieces, blanched them, and then put them into a stone pot with ginger slices, salt, and mushrooms to stew.
There were still a few crocodile eggs left at home. He thought for a moment and decided to crush the wild vegetables he had gathered, mix them with the egg liquid, and use them to make omelets.
Mo was awakened by the aroma of food. He turned over, opened his eyes, and saw Bai Ze busy in front of a stone pot in the firelight near the cave entrance.
The animal skin blanket slipped off his body as he moved. Mo lowered his head and stared at it for two seconds before reaching out to touch it.
The night was dark and a cool breeze was blowing, but the cave was warm and filled with the aroma of food.
The mate and cubs are both there.
For a moment, Mo wondered if he was seeing things. He sat there sideways, staring blankly for a long time.
It felt like he had returned to the days when his adoptive father and beast father were both there, and the cave was just like that.
Mo's Adam's apple bobbed, he opened his mouth, but ultimately remained silent.
He walked to Bai Ze's side, keeping a distance between them, and stared intently at the unique cooking methods of the sub-orcs.
Bai Ze was frying small strips of meat. He had cut a bowl of Moo Moo beast meat, marinated it with ginger slices and salt beforehand, and slowly put it into the pot after the oil was hot.
Noticing Mo's gaze, Bai Ze looked up and went to meet it: "What's wrong?"
Mo shook his head, seemingly finding it a bit strange to just stand and watch, so he sat down by the fire and added firewood.
Seeing the flames suddenly flare up at the bottom of the pot, Bai Ze quickly reminded him, "Keep the fire down."
Mo then took the piece of wood that he had just stuffed in out.
Although the two didn't talk much, the atmosphere was unusually harmonious.
"How about trying it?" Bai Ze smiled and handed a fried meat strip to Mo.
Mo looked up at him for two seconds, then took the food and ate it.
The meat is firm and has a rich, caramelized aroma. When you bite into it, the oil bursts out, and the more you chew, the more flavorful it becomes.
Mo nodded, his expression as expressionless as ever: "Delicious."
Yan and Xi, who were out for a stroll, unknowingly walked to the vicinity of Mo's cave by following the scent.
Yan's nose twitched: "What's that smell? It smells so good!"
Xi was already swallowing hard: "It's Jue's father-in-law making something delicious again."
"Bai Ze?"
Xi looked towards the firelight at the cave entrance: "The fried oil residue at noon was made by Bai Ze."
The memory of that crispy, golden-yellow food filled Yan with a sense of longing.
He looked at his cub and smiled mysteriously: "Xi, I have a good idea."
Knowing his beastly father all too well, Xi subconsciously wanted to refuse: "No—"
Yan didn't give the cub a chance at all, grabbing Xi with his arm around her waist and quickly walking to the entrance of Mo's cave.
Xi tried to twist and escape, but the increasingly strong fragrance made him forget to struggle.
"Making food?" Yan stood at the entrance of the cave and looked inside, seemingly greeting Bai Ze, but his eyes were actually fixed on the jerky bubbling in the pot.
Bai Ze looked up at the sound and was somewhat surprised to see the two people, one big and one small, especially since Xi was being carried by Yan.
"We came out for a walk, and Xi smelled the scent and ran over. I couldn't stop him." Yan put the cub down, shrugged, and said helplessly, "If I hadn't caught him beforehand, Xi probably would have run inside."
"I—" Xi glared angrily at her beast father.
What a shameless person!
"Look at you, you're drooling." Yan seemed busy wiping the cub's mouth, but actually manually muted his microphone.
"Ah, it smells so good! Bai Ze, what are you making?" Yan got down to business, craning his neck to ask.
Xi's resistance was futile. With a wrinkled face, she walked to Jue's side seeking comfort.
Jue picked up the fried meat jerky and handed it to Xi: "Be careful, it's hot."
Xi was immediately delighted. She glanced at Yan, shook the small jerky in her hand, and her expression was extremely smug.
Based on his years of understanding of his brother, Mo immediately saw through Yan's clumsy acting.
Yan only noticed Mo at this moment. He was not embarrassed at all by his childhood friend seeing through him. He smiled and said, "Oh, you're here too."
Mo picked up a small strip of meat, and unlike before when he ate it one after another, he put it in his mouth and chewed it slowly.
Given that Bai Ze was still around, Yan resisted the urge to snatch it, even though he wasn't sure he could beat Mo.
Mo was too lazy to expose him, so he raised his leg to block Yan's way: "It's getting dark."
"Hey!" Yan knew, of course, that Mo was doing it on purpose, probably retaliating for almost throwing the Hum Hum Beast in his face during a hunt.
But the temptation of the food in front of him was too great, and Yan's steely willpower crumbled and shattered into pieces.
He kept winking at Mo, "Next time, I'll carry the prey for you, okay?"
Bai Ze knew that the Yan family had taken good care of them, and he wanted to find an opportunity to express his gratitude.
But since it was Mo who brought the prey back, he quietly whispered in Mo's ear, "May we invite Qing's family over for dinner?"
The breath on his ear was warm, and Mo nodded somewhat awkwardly: "It's up to you."
Upon hearing this, Bai Ze immediately smiled and said, "Yan, Mo and I would like to invite you to dinner tonight. Let's invite Qing too. He saved me in the lake before, and I haven't properly thanked him yet."
"It's only right to help each other," Yan said, a smile already creeping onto his face.
Now he's acting all reserved, but Mo won't indulge him: "Then you—"
"I'll bring Qing over right away!" Yan turned and left, not giving Mo any chance to cause trouble.
Xi's cheeks were bulging from all the feeding by Bai Ze and Jue. He buried his head and chewed away like a little hamster.
When Yan and Qing came over, they were carrying an animal that looked like a duck. He had just happened to catch it when he went to bathe in the river that afternoon.
"Fresh Gaga Beast." Yan dropped it and then went to the stove.
Qing walked over and saw what was in the pot: "It smells so good, Bai Ze. I didn't know you were such a good cook."
"You've come at the perfect time, you can eat now." Bai Ze smiled as he scooped out the last pot of small meat strips.
Upon hearing this, Yan immediately reached out his hand: "I'll take it, I'll take it!"
Mo glanced at Yan when he saw how attentive Yan was.
Wild vegetable omelets, pork rib and mushroom soup, roasted meat, and fried jerky—Bai Ze laid out the dishes one by one: "Dinner's ready!"
Yan eagerly picked up his chopsticks, and after just one bite: "!"
He made no attempt to hide his excitement: "It's sooooo delicious!"
"What's this soup made with?" Qinglian took two big gulps. The aroma was irresistible. The meat was so tender that it fell off the bone with just a pinch, and most importantly, it didn't taste bloody at all. Instead, it had a very fresh and delicious flavor.
"It's stewed with these and the bones of the Humming Beast." Bai Ze picked up a slice of yellow ginger from the soup. "This helps to remove the fishy smell from the meat."
After saying that, he added, "It just tastes a bit strange when you eat it directly, you might not like it."
"Is this the root of the plant you dug up the other day?" Qing asked after thinking for a moment.
Bai Ze nodded: "There are mushrooms in it too."
Qing licked his lips: "This plant is actually edible, and it's so delicious!"
Yan was already engrossed in his meal, not even looking up. He took a bite of the egg pancake in his hand, which was fragrant and soft: "Bai Ze, what's this?"
"Made with wild vegetables and the eggs of the crocodile beast."
"You can actually make the eggs of the Crooked Beast like this?" Qing was very surprised. They had always boiled them in water or roasted them in a fire.
Mo drank the soup in his bowl without saying much, but Yan, who knew him well, knew that the orc was in a very good mood at the moment.
The two children, Jue and Xi, sat together, each holding a piece of dried meat in their left hand and an egg pancake in their right, while taking a few sips of soup.
Yan clicked his tongue, his eyes filled with admiration: "Bai Ze, where did you learn all this? I've never seen you do this before."
Mo, who had been quiet all along, also turned his gaze over. Compared to the simple curiosity of the others, there was something more indescribable in his eyes.
"Hmm..." Bai Ze was momentarily speechless. After thinking for a moment, he could only make up a story, "I don't know either. I guess I figured it out on my own before."
"I didn't spend much time with you guys back then."
If asked again, he would say that his brain was injured. Anyway, the medical system here is very backward and there is no way to check it. Bai Ze was very confident that he, a modern man, could not fool these "ancient people".
If all else fails, he'll act as a charlatan and use feudal superstition to fool them.
