The boy soldier next to the famous detective
Chapter 3 A Peaceful City
Thanks to Ran Mouri's best efforts, everyone enjoyed their dinner very much.
Jonah, with a blissful expression, swallowed the last bite of food amidst Ran's happy gaze. He had never tasted anything so delicious, and even felt a sense of admiration for Ran for making the dish.
This woman is really amazing. The food made from potatoes by the people at the rescue center and the old base could only fill their stomachs and didn't taste good at all.
"Conan, could you take Jonah to his room to rest for a while?"
"Okay, Jonah, come with me."
Blinking, Conan Edogawa nodded obediently, and discreetly placed a round bugging device under the dining table in the living room. Then he led Jonah to his and Kogoro Mouri's bedroom.
Conan Edogawa found Jonah to be a really strange kid, so he wouldn't miss this opportunity to get to know him!
Moreover, even when he wanted to chat with Jonah, the child didn't really pay attention to him, which really annoyed Conan Edogawa.
Seeing Jonah enter the room and begin intently studying the Japanese learning book that Eri had bought for him, Conan Edogawa sighed and focused his attention on eavesdropping.
"Eri, now you should tell me what's really going on with that child."
Looking at Eri Kisaki seriously, Kogoro Mouri knew that although his wife was somewhat willful, she was definitely not impulsive when it came to important matters. So, after receiving the news from the airport, although Kogoro Mouri was puzzled, he did not show it in front of Jonah.
"I'll tell you, don't worry."
Under the gaze of Kogoro Mouri and Ran Mouri, Eri Kisaki quickly recounted how she met Jonah and how she escaped with Jonah's help.
"Boy soldiers? I knew that such groups existed in other parts of the Middle East, but I never expected to see them in person today."
Without realizing it, Kogoro Mouri lit a cigarette and listened with a frown to Eri Kisaki's entire story.
"My God, Jonah is still so young, yet he's already been on the battlefield, and... he really killed someone?"
Ran Mouri covered her mouth with her hand. She was more moved than Kogoro Mouri. After hearing Jonah's story, she began to feel sorry for this child who had been so well-behaved since they met and who would show a happy expression when eating delicious food.
Conan Edogawa, who had been eavesdropping in the room, couldn't help but widen his eyes in disbelief as he looked at Jonah, who was sitting opposite him quietly reading a book. Jonah was about the same age as him, yet he was able to kill seven or eight adults all by himself. This was too terrifying.
"Eri, have you ever considered that he's already a child who's proficient with firearms and accustomed to killing? A child like that..."
"You can't blame him! Did he have any other choice? I believe Jonah is a good kid at heart! It's a blessing from God that I got to know him, a blessing for me and for him. I can't give up on him."
"Besides, this is Japan, not one of those chaotic, war-torn countries. I believe that a different environment will definitely have a different impact on his development!"
Although Kogoro Mouri wanted to argue his case, he couldn't bring himself to say anything cruel when faced with Jonah's background and experiences, especially since Jonah had indeed saved his wife.
Therefore, in the final discussion, Kogoro Mouri agreed to Eri Kisaki's request to let Jona also move into the Mouri Detective Agency.
This was a conclusion that Eri Kisaki had considered for a long time. Her work was usually very busy, making it difficult for her to stay by Jonah's side all the time.
In that case, it would be better to send him to the detective agency, where he could be accompanied by a child of the same age as Conan Edogawa, and have his own thoughtful daughter help take care of him. This would undoubtedly be a better environment than what he could provide himself.
She also needs to work hard to find more free time to visit Jonah. Eri knows that she must take on this responsibility and declare that she is the one who wants to adopt Jonah.
Over the next few days, Eri Kisaki ran around trying to get Jonah a permit to live in Japan, and then officially adopted him.
Meanwhile, Jonah has been constantly learning Japanese these past few days with Kogoro Mouri, Ran Mouri, and Conan Edogawa taking turns appearing, which is really painful for Jonah.
But Jonah knew that if he wanted to live in this country, he would have to learn the language, otherwise even the most basic communication would be difficult.
Over this period of time, Ran Mouri has come to regard Jonah as her younger brother, and Conan Edogawa and Kogoro Mouri have gradually lowered their guard against Jonah.
There was no way around it. Although Eri had told him about Jonah killing seven or eight adults all by himself, Jonah was just too obedient in his daily life. Apart from being a little quiet, there was nothing wrong with him.
He doesn't cause trouble, and he even helps Ran with housework. He's also serious about learning Japanese, which makes Kogoro Mouri say, "Jonah is much more obedient than Conan."
Jonah also observed the Maori family during this time.
His favorite person is Ran Mouri, because Ran always treats him with a smile, speaks to him in a very gentle tone, and can magically make a lot of delicious things every day.
Next was Conan Edogawa. Although Jonah found it strange to be with this little boy who was the same age as him, and who sometimes seemed like a big kid, Jonah accepted it after thinking that Conan Edogawa might have some special experiences.
As for Kogoro Mouri, Jonah didn't dislike him either. Although this smoking and drinking uncle seemed to be the most unreliable person in the family, his habit of bringing Jonah snacks or treats every time he came back from drinking showed Jonah that this uncle was also a good person.
"Jonah, you're going to school tomorrow, are you nervous?"
"I'm not nervous."
Jonah, who was squatting by the pond in the yard with Conan Edogawa and Ran Mouri, watching the carp leap out of the water with the startled deer (bamboo), shook his head slightly.
After this period of intensive Japanese study, Eri felt that Jonah could have simple daily conversations, and naturally she became concerned about Jonah's schooling.
Eri Kisaki believes that Jonah should play more with children his age, and that the innocence and liveliness of other children should influence Jonah, who had no friends when he was young, which is why he seems so aloof now.
Jonah had no objection to this. He had been in Japan for some time now and felt that he had gotten used to this peaceful and safe place. If he could start a new life in a different way, Jonah thought it would be nice.
"Aaaaaah!"
