Quick Transmigration and Childbirth: The Target is Not Human
Chapter 214 Beautiful Widow, Professional Snake Tamer
"Next."
Kang Ping kept her head down, the nib of her pen paused on the medical record book, and a pair of shiny black leather military boots came into view. She didn't look up, but the corners of her mouth slightly turned up.
"Where does it hurt?"
The person opposite him suppressed their anger, their tone sinister: "Headache."
"How long has it been?"
"What do you mean, how long? I've been in line for two hours, and you're going to show me how to play the role of a good doctor? I want to know about what happened two years ago, I need an explanation."
"How long have you had this headache?" That was her only answer to his first question.
"Why does everyone say you're dead? Why did you change your name? Why don't you reply to any letters? Why didn't you tell me you were alive? Why—"
"I'm just a doctor."
Kang Ping interrupted him, finally raising his eyes, only to meet those fierce, dark eyes with white showing on the bottom.
The edges were damp and slightly red.
She paused for a moment, then suddenly lowered her head again, as if to cover up the loosening of her blue mask behind her left ear:
"I'm not an encyclopedia, I can't answer so many 'whys'... Instead, tell me, when did your headache start?"
"...Starting two years ago...no, after my lover passed away."
His voice was dry and hoarse, as if he was about to burst into tears at the next word.
Holding her pen, she scribbled a few words on the medical record: "This headache has lasted for quite a while, so we need to get it checked out properly. Let's go to the lab on the first floor and get a blood test."
"...What?"
Lu Xize's eyes revealed genuine confusion.
Kang Ping pushed the lab report over, his tone businesslike: "There are many causes of headaches. It could be anemia, high blood pressure, or something growing in your brain. It's better to find out the cause."
Lu Xize stared at the list and repeated the facts, word by word: "I queued for two hours."
The implication is, are you playing me?
"Go back from here, turn left three times, it's next to the stairs." Kang Ping had already looked down to look at the next medical record. "Next patient."
Lu Xize clutched the thin piece of paper, stood for two seconds, then turned and left.
You have to queue for blood tests, and then wait for the results.
Another hour had passed by the time Lu Xize slapped a lab report onto the examination table.
"Dr. Kang, the blood test is done."
Kang Cheng ignored his murderous tone, took the test results, glanced at them quickly without much analysis, and said, "Your blood count is a bit high, there might be inflammation. Take off your coat, I want to listen to your heart and lungs."
Before Lu Xize could even get agitated when the cold stethoscope was pressed against his chest, it suddenly went silent.
The stethoscope was moved in front of the chest and behind the back.
She spoke patiently and calmly, instructing him to inhale, exhale, inhale again, and exhale again.
His tone was calm and unhurried, as if he were coaxing something to slowly fall down.
He could see the downy hair on her profile and the two thick eyelashes blinking rhythmically.
A full five minutes passed, and her attention remained on him.
"Okay, sit up." She took off her stethoscope. "I still need to take your blood pressure."
Lu Xize obediently rolled up his sleeves and watched as she wrapped the cuff of the blood pressure monitor around his upper arm, squeezing and releasing the rubber bulb repeatedly.
"Your low blood pressure is a bit high," she concluded, then looked up at him. "Have you been lacking rest lately?"
Lu Xize opened his mouth, but swallowed back the words he wanted to say, looking into her calm eyes—
She nodded obediently.
"Go to the second floor and get an X-ray." Kang Cheng was already writing out the prescription. "You should also check your cervical spine for the headache; that could be the cause."
"X-ray?"
"What's wrong, Commander Lu? You find it troublesome?"
"no."
Lu Xize took the second form, stood up, and glanced back at her as he walked to the door. Kang Cheng was taking the pulse of the next patient and didn't even spare a glance for him.
By the time he returned to the third floor with the X-ray film that still smelled of medicine, an hour and a half had passed.
Kang Cheng looked at the X-ray under the light and nodded: "The cervical spine is fine, but—"
She drawled out her words and pulled out the third form: "You mentioned feeling a bit nauseous, so it's probably a gastrointestinal issue. Go to the lab on the right and get a stool test."
Lu Xize's face darkened, and his fur, which had just been smoothed out, began to bristle.
"Dr. Kang."
"Um?"
"Are you serious?"
Kang Cheng met his gaze. His eyes held a businesslike indifference, but Lu Xize could see clearly that the slight curve at the corner of his eye meant he was suppressing a laugh.
He took a deep breath, said nothing, took the order, and turned to leave.
When I pushed open the door to the consultation room for the third time, it was already past closing time.
The sunlight in the corridor turned dim and yellowish.
Kang Cheng was leaning against the side of the examination table, holding the test results that the nurse had brought him before leaving get off work. Hearing footsteps, he glanced at them out of the corner of his eye but didn't look up.
"Ah, Commander Lu, you haven't left yet."
"..."
"I was just looking at your test results. Luckily, you're extremely healthy—the kind of healthy who could fight three hundred rounds even if their intestines fell out of their stomach—"
Before she could even utter the word "Kang," a tight, impenetrable embrace rushed in and enveloped her completely.
The faint smell of gunpowder lingered on him, invading her sense of smell; his uniform pressed against her, the metal buttons cold against her white coat.
His hand gripped her back so tightly that she could barely breathe.
"Commander Lu, the doctor at the shop is not currently providing mental health treatment."
She struggled, but couldn't break free, and blurted out a joke with a laugh.
With no one around, she lowered her guard considerably, and her tone became more like that of the headstrong yet spirited young girl from two years ago.
Suddenly, she felt something wet and warm seeping into her collar.
He cried? Was he really crying? Is this still the same ruthless, cold-blooded, and heartless living devil who's been widely rumored to be?
Xia Yangyang paused for a moment, and her intention to continue teasing him vanished.
The corridor was quiet.
The setting sun slanted in through the window at the end of the corridor, casting long, overlapping shadows of the two people.
