In the depths of winter, as the year draws to a close, the city of Beijing is ablaze with the sounds of fireworks.

As the New Year approaches, the entire long street is adorned with red lanterns and colorful ribbons, and vendors line the street, with shops selling New Year's goods such as sugar paintings and candied hawthorns scattered about. The biting cold wind is somewhat dampened by the lively atmosphere of the city.

Liu Wenying went back and forth to the silk shop every day, busy with the year-end business.

Today, she had just finished checking the stock and was about to board the car with Ling'er to return home.

When the people arrived outside the shop, they couldn't find their carriage.

Ling'er stood on tiptoe and looked around, then said to Liu Wenying, "Perhaps the coachman is delayed. I'll go and urge him on."

Liu Wenying nodded and stood outside the shop to wait.

The street was bustling with people and vehicles when suddenly the sound of rapid hoofbeats came from the east.

"Get out of the way! Get out of the way!"

The coachman shouted a warning, but the out-of-control carriage was going too fast, and Liu Wenying couldn't dodge in time.

"Master!" Ling'er, who was in the distance, was terrified when she suddenly saw the sudden change.

Suddenly, a tall figure shot in from the side.

The man was incredibly fast. He grabbed her wrist with one hand and pulled her behind him, while using his other arm to block the charging horse's momentum!

The bones clashed against the hardwood shaft with a dull thud, mixed with the neighing of horses.

Liu Wenying was shielded behind that man, and all she could see were his broad shoulders and the lines of his neck.

The carriage was swerved by the impact, grazing past the sugar painting stall and crashing into the porcelain stall across the street, shattering with a loud crash.

Crazy Horse, lying on the ground, was finally subdued by several strong men. The street was in a mess, and the still-shaken crowd gradually gathered around.

Liu Wenying was still shaken when the person blocking her way turned around and turned out to be Pei Dingxuan.

It had to be him.

Amidst the bustling crowds and in the midst of a critical moment, he rushed to her aid, shielding her from a fatal blow.

Pei Dingxuan looked at her, wanting to say something, but before he could utter a word, he fell forward.

Liu Wenying caught him face to face, touching something warm and moist.

His arm was pierced by the broken carriage shaft, and dark red stains quickly spread across his dark blue outer robe.

Liu Wenying's heart tightened. "Ling'er! Quickly go to the nearest clinic and call a doctor!"

He then called out to those around him, "Could someone please help carry him over there?"

Several kind-hearted men lifted the man up with their bare hands. Liu Wenying took out a silk handkerchief and pressed it tightly against the wound on his arm. She followed him all the way to the clinic at the end of the street.

The clinic was filled with the strong smell of medicine. The old doctor cut open Pei Dingxuan's shirt, revealing a wound on his left forearm that was deep enough to expose the bone, with a splinter embedded in it.

The doctor cleaned, applied medicine, and bandaged the wound quickly and efficiently.

Liu Wenying stood outside the screen, listening to the quiet inside, her heart filled with unease.

Half an hour later, the doctor came out wiping his hands.

"The bleeding has stopped, and there's no immediate danger to his life. However, he lost too much blood, injured his internal organs, and has a fractured arm. He'll need to be unconscious for a while. Are you a relative of the injured person, young lady? Go and get the medicine quickly."

Liu Wenying took the prescription, paid the consultation fee, and then slipped an extra piece of silver to the apprentice at the clinic to help prepare the medicine and take care of her.

After doing all this, she stood in front of the sickbed. Pei Dingxuan's eyes were closed, his lips were bloodless, and the lingering fear in his heart slowly surged up.

If it weren't for that broken piece of his carriage shaft, it would have pierced her chest...

After her emotions calmed down and reason returned, Liu Wenying began to have doubts.

Today's crowds are chaotic, and crises can strike at any moment. How could he possibly appear at the most dangerous moment and risk his life to save us? What a coincidence!

Recalling the terrifying scene from not long ago, he realized that the direction he had appeared from was the teahouse directly opposite the silk shop.

Having made up her mind, Liu Wenying instructed the doctor and Ling'er to take good care of Pei Dingxuan, then turned and walked out of the clinic, heading towards the teahouse across the street.

Climbing to the second floor of the teahouse, the elegant seats facing the street offer a superb view.

Sitting here, the view is completely unobstructed, allowing you to clearly see the entrance to Liu's Silk Shop, the counter, and even the small door leading to the backyard.

Just as she was about to sit down, the waiter rushed forward to stop her.

"Please forgive me, madam, but this spot has been reserved for a long time and we do not accept outside guests. Please find another place."

Liu Wenying pursed her lips and pressed on, "Is the person who booked this place quite tall, over eight feet, always dressed in dark brocade, and rarely smiles?"

The waiter nodded repeatedly, astonished, "How did you know, madam? That gentleman has been keeping me here for almost three months, coming every day, drinking a pot of tea until closing time."

Liu Wenying exhaled softly, and the white mist dissipated, obscuring her eyes and brows.

"I should have known."

Why ask any more questions? There's no one else but Pei Dingxuan who could see her in the shadows.

If he hadn't stayed here every day, silently watching, how could he have so promptly risked his life to save us?

After clarifying all the details, Liu Wenying returned to the clinic.

When she rushed back, the sickbed was empty, the bedding was neatly arranged, and there was no sign of anyone.

Liu Wenying hurriedly summoned a doctor to inquire.

"The patient woke up, and I told him to lie down for a while longer, but he insisted that he was fine. He didn't take his medicine, just left a piece of silver and left."

He deliberately avoided her and refused to see her.

Liu Wenying stood before the empty hospital bed, overwhelmed with mixed feelings.

The more he silently gave and quietly withdrew, the more she cared and the more difficult it was for her to let go.

With heavy hearts, Liu Wenying and Ling'er returned to the manor.

As dusk began to fall, Liu Wenying returned to her room.

Before long, Pei Zeyu arrived.

"Ling'er said you almost had an accident in the capital today. Were you injured anywhere?"

Liu Wenying gently shook her head, forcing a smile: "Second Master, I'm fine."

Pei Zeyu was perceptive and immediately saw through her unease.

"What's wrong? You look strange."

"Today is... the old man shielded me from danger and got injured, so I owe him another one."

The last sentence was choked with emotion.

The debt of gratitude for saving her life was as heavy as mountains and seas, and she had no way to repay it.

Unfortunately, the recipient of this kindness was Pei Dingxuan, the one who had once been obsessed with her.

She had feared his confinement and resented his domineering nature, but she had also repeatedly received his kindness and protection.

These days she has been engrossed in managing the estate and shops, busy day after day, thinking that being busy would make things better, and that she would be too busy to think about anything else.

But some things can't disappear just because you don't want them to.

Just like the private seats in a teahouse that are always booked out, the empty beds in a clinic are like those in a hospital.

He was always there, watching over her in his own unique way, from a place she couldn't see.

She has only glimpsed the tip of the iceberg until today.

I can't bear to, I can't repay, I can't forget, and I can't let go.

The room was warmly lit, casting soft, lingering shadows.

Pei Zeyu raised his hand and wiped away the tears from the corners of her eyes.

Seeing the confusion and sadness in her eyes, his heart sank as well.

Liu Wenying only realized she was crying when she saw the glistening water stains on his fingertips.

"Second Master, I..." She raised her hand to cover herself, intending to turn her face away.

Pei Zeyu couldn't bear to see her suffer in silence, so he immediately leaned down and pulled her into his arms.

Liu Wenying's cheek pressed against his chest, the brocade felt slightly cool, and her heartbeat could be heard through the fabric.

She stiffened, trying to back away, but was pressed down on the back of her head.

"Don't be sad. If you really can't let go of him, then go find him."
