"Chicken Rice is amazing!"
Everyone was playing with little Chen Hui, who wasn't shy at all. He lay on the coffee table, eating the fruit from his large bowl, and looking at the tea in the cup on the tray, asked Chen Dong, "Daddy, can I drink it?"
Chen Dong took the small cup, tested the temperature, and then brought it to his son's lips. Little Chen Hui took a sip, then turned around and spat, "It's so bitter, I don't want to drink it!"
"Hahaha!"
Chen Xianfu laughed heartily and asked Chen Dong, "Didn't you guys have any tea in America?"
"Yes, Grandpa drinks it often, but Jimmy doesn't really like it. He saw the color of the tea and thought it was cola, so he asked about it. I let him try it," Chen Dong said with a smile.
"Hahaha!"
After sitting for a while, when he had sobered up a bit, Chen Zailong got up and said he would take Chen Dong to the wasteland to take a look. Several of his cousins who had drunk less followed him and walked outside.
Chen Xiangui, with his hands behind his back, followed behind Chen Xianfu and Chen Xianhai. As soon as they stepped outside, many people greeted the three Chen brothers politely, "Uncle Xiangui, Uncle Xianfu, Uncle Xianhai, where are you three planning to go for a stroll?"
The Chen family in Lianzhai is no longer what it used to be. After their wealthy nephew returned from America and witnessed Chen Dong's wealth, the people of Lianzhai Village are now very careful to curry favor with the Chen family, not daring to offend them.
Even the brigade leader, Huang Bingkun, would assign the Chen family members easier jobs when arranging work for them, and he wouldn't dare to record fewer work points for them.
At the entrance of the village committee, Huang Bingkun heard voices outside and came out with a cigarette in his mouth. He saw the Chen family members surrounding a man in a white shirt and gray trousers walking towards the west end of the village. He immediately recognized him as Chen Dong, the wealthy nephew of the Chen family who had returned from America.
Without thinking, Huang Bingkun threw the cigarette he had just taken a puff of on the ground and jogged over, saying, "Zai Guang, where are you guys going? Why are you gathering so many people?"
When Chen Zaiguang saw that it was Huang Bingkun, his classmate from the village primary school, he said, "Bingkun, this is my cousin Zaidong. I'm just showing him around the village so he can get familiar with the place."
"Do you know the way? I know this place well. Let me introduce our village to Zai Dong," Huang Bingkun said, without even moving, he walked over and led the way.
"These are our village's fields. Beyond that field embankment is Shangzhai Village's. The two villages share a single irrigation canal," Huang Bingkun explained to Chen Dong, extending his hand.
This irrigation canal was built by the able-bodied men of the two villages together. It was fed by the stream. However, during the dry season, the two villages would use the water and would often argue and exchange foul language.
At this point, Chen Zaixing recounted the story of his father, Chen Xiangui, when he was young: "Dongzi, don't be fooled by the abundance of water in the stream now. In the summer, when the water level drops, the villagers from the upper village will try to divert our village's water. We've had many arguments about it."
"My father, your uncle, back then, stood by this irrigation ditch, and with just a hoe, he managed to scare the people from Shangzhai so much that they dared not act recklessly. He was just like Zhang Fei who single-handedly repelled a million Cao Cao's troops at Changban Slope."
"What nonsense are you talking about, brat?" Chen Xiangui, who was following behind, stepped forward and slapped Chen Zaixing on the back of the head. Chen Dong, who was intrigued, asked with a gossipy expression, "Uncle, what's going on? Tell me quickly."
Chen Xiangui laughed and said, "It's nothing. It's just that those people from Shangzhai blocked the irrigation ditch with mud and grass, and gave the water to their fields first. At that time, the sun was very strong, and without water, our village's seedlings would have died. I went over and dug the mud out of them with one hoe."
Chen Zaixing proudly added, "At that time, my father was barefoot, holding a hoe, standing in the ditch. There were seven or eight people from Shangzhai who wanted to take advantage of their numbers and bully my father. They went down and blocked the ditch. My father held the hoe and said to those people from Shangzhai on the dam of the ditch."
"If you've got the guts, come down here. I'll chop you all up with a single stroke of my hoe and bury you in the field as fertilizer!"
When Chen Xiangui recalled that incident, he laughed it off, saying, "It's all ancient history, why bring it up?"
Huang Bingkun gave Chen Xiangui a thumbs up and said, "Uncle Xiangui, you really were right back then. Because of your commotion, the people in Shangzhai no longer dared to block the water on their own, and the two villages had to discuss it together."
Chen Dong stood on the edge of the field, looking at the vast expanse of rice paddies in front of him. The ears of rice were so full that the stalks drooped low, and when the wind blew, they undulated like waves.
"Come on, Dongzi, the wasteland is over there. Let's go that way," Chen Zailong pointed to the land in the distance.
Huang Bingkun was puzzled. Why go to see the wasteland instead of the perfectly good rice paddies? But he didn't ask any more questions and just followed them to the wasteland next to Shangzhai.
"Bingkun, I remember this land is about thirty mu, right?" Chen Xiangui asked Huang Bingkun, looking at the wasteland covered with reeds in front of him.
"Thirty-four mu," Huang Bingkun replied, then asked Chen Xiangui, "Uncle Xiangui, why are you suddenly asking about this?"
Chen Xiangui glanced at Chen Dong, who nodded at him. Chen Xiangui then said, "I won't hide it from you. Anyway, we're going to set up a factory in our Lianzhai. As the brigade leader, you'll find out sooner or later."
"Set up a factory?"
Huang Bingkun was initially puzzled, then looked at Chen Dong in disbelief, "Uncle Xiangui, do you mean that your nephew Zai Dong is planning to set up a factory in our Lianzhai and has his eye on this piece of land!"
"It's not even close to being a done deal yet, so we can't really see what's going on," Chen Xiangui said, not daring to make any absolute statements, as he needed to leave some room for maneuver.
Huang Bingkun, however, had already made up his mind, exclaiming, "If we really set up a factory in our Lianzhai, that would be fantastic!"
"Our Lianzhai village is a nobody, neglected and uncared for. If you really set up a factory here in the east, it would be a tremendous opportunity for our village!"
"You guys stay here and watch over things. I'll run back to the village headquarters right away and call Secretary Tian for you. Wait for me," Huang Bingkun said, and then, as if wound up, he took off running back the way he came, his steps incredibly fast.
When Huang Bingkun burst into the brigade headquarters, panting heavily, Secretary Tian was leisurely drinking tea in his office and was about to light a cigarette when Huang Bingkun burst in, leaning against the doorframe, his breath uneven.
"What happened? What's going on? You were running so fast I almost couldn't catch up with you," Secretary Tian said, holding the match he was about to strike, as he looked at Huang Bingkun.
"At the west end of the village, Old Chen's... wealthy... nephew who came back from America... says he wants to set up a factory there!"
"Secretary Tian, you... hurry, hurry over there... take a look," Huang Bingkun said breathlessly, plopped down on the threshold, and reached for the cigarette in his pocket, only to realize that he had dropped it in his haste to run.
He couldn't help but look at the Red Plum cigarette case that Secretary Tian had placed on the table. Secretary Tian picked up the cigarette case and immediately walked out. Huang Bingkun sat on the threshold, stretched out his hand, and waved to Secretary Tian as he walked away.
Hey, Lao Tian, get a cigarette!
