Courtyard House: Home Alone

Chapter 7 Jia Zhangshi

Lin Yifan's breathing became rapid; this was simply a huge treasure! He suppressed his excitement and thought to himself, "For now, I'll keep this treasure in the backyard inside."

This basement is a good place; it can serve as a temporary hiding place. We should try to dig out an exit when we get the chance, put some supplies inside, and it can be used as a safe house.

He kept this discovery firmly in mind. At that moment, he felt dizzy, probably because his mental strength was insufficient, so he quickly withdrew his probing consciousness.

After drinking a few sips of the spiritual spring water, the cool and sweet water slid down my throat, and the dizziness instantly dissipated, and my spirits were refreshed.

He then realized that the meticulous investigation he had just conducted had taken a toll on his mental energy.

It seems that in the future, when using domain abilities, especially when conducting such large-scale and in-depth investigations, I will have to be careful to control the time and avoid overexerting my mental energy.

After resting for a while, Lin Yifan turned his attention back to the spiritual spring space. Just as Lin Yifan was about to continue studying the space, there was a soft knock on the door, accompanied by the hoarse voice of the deaf old woman: "Little Fan, Grandma has brought you firewood."

Lin Yifan felt a chill run down his spine and quickly withdrew his consciousness from the space, getting up to open the door.

Outside the door, the deaf old woman was struggling to move her two small feet, dragging a small bundle of chopped firewood, with fine beads of sweat on her forehead.

Seeing Lin Yifan, she smiled kindly again: "Here, this firewood was chopped and delivered by your Uncle Yi yesterday. I brought some over for you to use for now."

Lin Yifan quickly stepped forward and took the firewood. It was heavy in his hands, weighing at least ten kilograms. "Grandma Long, you're too kind. It's too kind of you to make this trip yourself," he said sincerely.

"Hey, you child, why are you being so polite with your grandma?" The deaf old lady waved her hand, her gaze lingering on Lin Yifan's face for a moment, then seemingly casually glancing around the room.

"You child, you must be careful with fire when you're home alone. Seal the coal stove before you go to bed at night."

"I understand, thank you for your concern, Grandma Long." Lin Yifan carried the firewood into the house and placed it next to the coal stove.

The deaf old woman gave a few more instructions before turning and leaving.

As Lin Yifan watched her retreating figure, he was once again struck by the fact that although this old woman was called "Deaf Granny," she was not deaf at all, and her mind seemed to be more complex than it appeared.

However, at least for now, it seems that she has no ill intentions towards me.

After closing the door, Lin Yifan looked at the bundle of firewood, sat by the stove, and felt the warm firelight. His thoughts began to stir again.

The secret of Qian Liugen and his wife terrified him, and the treasure in the backyard excited him even more. This seemingly peaceful courtyard house was actually a place where hidden talents resided.

His only remaining hope now lies in this mysterious spiritual spring space.

"We must improve our strength as soon as possible," Lin Yifan clenched his fist. "We must master both mental power and other functions of the space as quickly as possible."

Only in this way can we protect ourselves in this dangerous era, and even... protect those who are good to us.

After this test and exploration, Lin Yifan gained a more comprehensive understanding of his abilities in his field and a completely new understanding of this seemingly ordinary courtyard house.

This place not only contains the everyday gossip of neighbors, but also hides untold secrets and dangers.

He knew that his future path was destined to be bumpy. But at the same time, he became even more determined to improve his strength as soon as possible and make good use of the spiritual spring space.

Only in this way can he protect himself, find his parents, and... avenge the blood debt owed to those damned Japanese devils in this perilous era!

Just then, the door was knocked on again, and at the same time, the voices of two children could be heard outside. Lin Yifan looked and saw that it was Jia Dongxu and He Yuzhu from the Central Court. Jia Dongxu was three years older than the original owner of the body and was exactly ten years old this year, while He Yuzhu was born in 35 and was only five years old this year.

Two teenagers blocked the doorway. Jia Dongxu stood with his hands on his hips and his chin slightly raised, exuding an air of unquestionable authority. He Yuzhu, on the other hand, hid behind him, peeking out half his head and looking at Lin Yifan with curiosity and a little timidity.

"Lin Yifan, my mom wants you to come to our house!" Jia Dongxu's voice was sharp and loud, with a hint of imperiousness.

Lin Yifan frowned slightly. He didn't have a good impression of Jia Dongxu. In his memory, the original owner of this body had been bullied by him quite a bit.

He asked calmly, "Did your mother want to see me about something?"

"Who knows? We'll find out when we get there!"

Jia Dongxu waved his hand impatiently, "Just go when I tell you to, stop talking nonsense!" After saying that, he pushed Lin Yifan.

Lin Yifan swayed, easily deflecting his force, his eyes turning cold. This Jia Dongxu was as tyrannical as ever.

His mind raced. What could Jia Zhangshi possibly want from him? He glanced at He Yuzhu beside him; the boy seemed more honest.

"Understood." Lin Yifan didn't press the matter further. He didn't want to cause trouble, but he was definitely not afraid of it either. He needed to integrate into this environment as soon as possible, and at the same time, he needed to figure out the background and attitude of these neighbors.

A trip to Jia Dongxu's house might yield some information from Jia Zhangshi and provide a more direct understanding of the family's character.

"Then hurry up and go!" Jia Dongxu saw that Lin Yifan had agreed and a smug look appeared on his face. He turned around and walked towards the Central Court first.

He Yuzhu glanced at Lin Yifan and quickly followed. Lin Yifan locked the door and followed behind at a leisurely pace. Passing through the moon gate of the central courtyard, they arrived at the gate of Jia Dongxu's house.

Before even entering the house, one could hear Jia Zhangshi's signature loud voice shouting something inside, accompanied by the clattering of pots and pans.

Lin Yifan took a deep breath. It seemed this mission wouldn't be easy. He composed himself and stepped inside.

Upon entering, a strong smell of cooking oil mixed with the aroma of food hits you.

There stood Jia Zhangshi, wearing an apron, busily working by the stove. She was vigorously stir-frying the vegetables in the pan with a spatula, muttering to herself, "Damn it, vegetable prices have gone up again! How are we supposed to survive if this keeps up!"

Hearing the door open, Jia Zhangshi turned around and saw Lin Yifan. Her triangular eyes narrowed immediately as she looked him up and down.

He said in an unfriendly tone, "Oh, Lin kid, we've finally been waiting for you! What's wrong? You're putting on airs, did my Dongxu have to go and invite you?"

Lin Yifan stood at the doorway expressionlessly, without saying a word. He knew that arguing with this kind of person would only be pointless.

At this moment, Jia Dongxu ran out from the inner room, pointed at Lin Yifan, and said to Jia Zhangshi, "Mom, I brought him!"

Jia Zhangshi slammed the spatula against the edge of the pot with a loud "clang," then walked up to Lin Yifan with her hands on her hips.
