Courtyard House: Home Alone
Chapter 102 Demon Slayer
However, Lin Yifan was not about to give them a chance. He had already anticipated that the Japanese would use artillery to deal with the exposed firing positions, and he kept changing his firing position.
Each time he appeared, it was in a place the Japanese didn't expect, and the time he spent there was less than a minute. This caused the Japanese artillery to frantically adjust their cannons, but they still couldn't keep up with Lin Yifan's speed of movement.
Lin Yifan moved like a ghost between various bunkers, each pause accompanied by the chilling roar of the MG42 machine gun.
He used his mental powers to sense the movements of the Japanese soldiers and the landing points of their artillery fire in advance, and was always able to move to a safe area at the most dangerous moment.
The machine gun fire that had been firing a hundred meters to the left suddenly rang out two hundred meters to the right, making it impossible for the Japanese artillery to lock onto the target. They could only futilely pour shells at the empty bunker.
But the shells were strange; they all disappeared without a trace after being fired, with only one or two occasionally exploding. Ninety percent of the shells ended up in Lin Yifan's spatial storage.
Under Lin Yifan's relentless onslaught, the First Battalion suffered heavy casualties and was almost rendered incapable of fighting. The surviving soldiers lay sprawled on the ground, too ashamed to even lift their heads.
Tanaka Hiroshi stared at the battlefield before him, a scene of carnage, his facial muscles twitching uncontrollably. His prized Imperial Army elites were utterly utterly vulnerable before the enemy's machine guns.
"Second Battalion! Third Battalion! Flank them from both flanks! Find and destroy their firing positions!" Tanaka Hiroshi gave the order with red eyes. He didn't believe that with the regiment's numerical advantage, they couldn't take down a machine gunner hiding in the shadows.
Upon receiving the order, the two battalions of Japanese soldiers immediately split into two groups and cautiously advanced through the woods and hills on either side of the road. They knew that a frontal assault would be tantamount to suicide, and their only hope was to find the enemy's position by flanking them.
Lin Yifan naturally sensed the Japanese soldiers' intentions, a cold smile appearing on his lips. After reloading his MG42, he didn't pursue the flanking Japanese soldiers, but instead aimed his gun at the trucks and supplies behind the Tanaka Regiment. He knew these were the Japanese soldiers' lifeline.
"Rat-a-tat-tat..." Another burst of rapid fire followed, the bullets accurately hitting the fuel tanks of several trucks. "Boom! Boom! Boom!" Several violent explosions rang out, the trucks were instantly engulfed in flames, and the ammunition loaded on them was also detonated. The chain of explosions plunged the rear of the Japanese troops into a sea of fire.
"Baka yarou!" Tanaka Hiroshi was so angry he almost vomited blood. He watched helplessly as a large amount of supplies were destroyed.
The two flanking battalions had now entered the edge of the minefield Lin Yifan had previously set up. Although they were extremely cautious, several soldiers still accidentally triggered the booby traps Lin Yifan had laid. "Boom! Boom!" The explosions rang out again. Although the power was not great, they successfully slowed their advance and made them even more panicked, fearing that they might step on another landmine.
Lin Yifan seized the opportunity and quickly moved to a new cover, which offered a commanding view of the Japanese flanking force's flank. He adjusted his breathing and aimed at a Japanese officer who was cautiously advancing. "Bang!" A muffled gunshot rang out, and the officer fell to the ground.
This shot served as a signal. In less than a second, Lin Yifan switched his gun, and his MG42 roared again, unleashing a fierce barrage of fire on the panicked Japanese flank troops.
Caught off guard, another group of Japanese soldiers fell, and the remaining men were so terrified that they dared not advance any further and turned to flee.
As Tanaka Hiroshi looked at the retreating flank troops and the still rampant machine gun fire ahead, a sense of despair rose in his heart for the first time.
He didn't know what kind of enemy he was facing; the enemy seemed to be everywhere, with powerful firepower, and extremely cunning.
He glanced at the chaotic and heavily damaged troops, and the burning and exploding supply vehicles in the distance, and knew that this reinforcement mission had completely failed.
If this continues, the entire Tanaka Regiment will likely be wiped out. And the 20th Division and Commander Okamura, whom he's been in contact with since departing from Tianjin, have remained completely silent; their fates are probably grim. And here comes the excuse for retreating.
"Withdraw! Order the troops to withdraw immediately!" Tanaka Hiroshi gritted his teeth, practically squeezing out the two words. For a proud Imperial Army officer, this was undoubtedly a humiliating disgrace.
But he was an exception, because he believed his judgment was always accurate, and staying alive was the most important thing at this moment. The so-called "retreat" was just a polite way of saying he was going to withdraw.
Upon receiving the order, the already stunned Japanese soldiers, as if granted a pardon, disregarded all formation and scrambled to flee back the way they had come. The wounded soldiers who could still move were ruthlessly abandoned on the spot, their mournful cries echoing across the empty battlefield, yet no one turned back.
Under the cover of the guards, Tanaka Hiroshi practically tumbled and crawled into a command vehicle that was still running. The driver was already pale with fright and slammed on the gas pedal. The car sped off like a startled wild beast, kicking up a cloud of dust.
Lin Yifan did not pursue the fleeing Japanese soldiers. He understood the principle of not chasing a cornered enemy, and besides, his main objective had been achieved. Watching the disorganized remnants of the Tanaka Regiment flee in disarray, his face remained expressionless, only a cold mockery lingered. These once-arrogant invaders, before absolute power, were nothing more than a pack of stray dogs.
Lin Yifan did not pursue them. He knew the principle of not pursuing a desperate enemy, and his main objective was to eliminate the 20th Division and prevent reinforcements. Now, both of these objectives had been basically achieved.
He simply watched indifferently as the Japanese soldiers fled in disarray until they disappeared from sight.
The battlefield returned to deathly silence, with only burning trucks and billowing smoke remaining.
Lin Yifan stood up from his cover, dusted himself off, and calmly surveyed the ravaged battlefield.
He glanced at the sky; the sun was already high in the sky. It was time to deal with those two "big shots" in the space.
With a thought, Lin Yifan retrieved the two Class A war criminals who had been imprisoned from his spatial storage. One of them was none other than Japanese Army General Okamura Yasuji, one of the masterminds behind numerous acts of aggression against China.
At this moment, these two war criminals, who were usually arrogant and domineering on the battlefield, were filled with fear and despair. They collapsed to the ground, their bodies trembling uncontrollably, and looked at Lin Yifan as if they were looking at a demon from hell.
"You executioners whose hands are stained with the blood of the Chinese people, you've finally met your match." Lin Yifan's voice was icy cold and devoid of any emotion.
He took out a captured Japanese military sword from his storage space; the blade gleamed with a chilling light in the sunlight.
Okamura Neiji seemed to still want to maintain his last shred of dignity. He struggled to raise his head, his thin, bespectacled face contorted with rage, and roared in hoarse Japanese, "You...you can't do this to me! I am a general of the Great Japanese Empire! What you're doing will trigger an even more serious conflict between our two countries!"
Lin Yifan scoffed, his face full of disdain: "Conflict? When you traveled thousands of miles to our land to burn, kill, and loot, did you not think about conflict? When you used bayonets to slit open pregnant women's bellies, did you not think about conflict? When you impaled babies on the tips of your spears for amusement, did you not think about conflict? Now you're scared? Too late!"
Without another word, he swiftly and decisively brought down his blade. Two wicked heads rolled to the ground, blood spurting out and staining the earth beneath them.
