Chapter 6 Freljord
Chapter 6 Freljord
Freljord.
A fierce storm raged, and a biting cold current relentlessly lashed this vast, boundless frozen land in the north.
Looking into the distance, the earth was covered in silvery white, and snowflakes, like willow catkins or cotton, fell from the dim sky, melting the sky and the earth into a white unity.
Whoosh! Whoosh!
On the snow-covered, steep mountain road, Huo Jixing, panting heavily, raised his head from his gray-white fur cloak. His handsome face was already frozen, and his eyebrows and the tip of his nose were covered with ice crystals.
The wind and snow before me were so intense that they intertwined and swirled into a chaotic oil painting, reflected in my pupils.
Meanwhile, the snow and ice piled up on his body, weighing down his pack, made him feel increasingly weak and breathless.
But Eric, who was at the very front of the group, kept moving forward, so he could only choose to move on silently.
As time went by, the wind and snow seemed to grow stronger, compressing everyone's vision. They could see nothing beyond four or five meters, leaving only a vast expanse of silvery white filling the sky and earth.
However, Eric seemed unaffected and continued on the right path, but how he discerned the right direction was a skill that Hojixing could not comprehend.
Or to see the situation within the team.
Eric, who was walking forward, turned around, wiped the ice shards from his face, looked around at the group behind him with his brown eyes, and said in a deep voice, "Hurry up, let's rest up ahead."
"yes!"
The silent ranks erupted in a unified shout, each Noxian scout suppressing their weariness, maintaining formation, and continuing their advance into the snowstorm.
Snowflakes fell, swaying and fluttering across the earth.
After walking another four or five miles, a low hill covered in ice and snow came into view.
The hill is not high, about a hundred meters or so, which is quite common in the sprawling Ironthorn Mountains, but it has a leeward area where bare rocks can be faintly seen.
Seeing this, everyone quickly followed Eric's steps, trudging through the snow, and swiftly reached the foot of the hill.
The solid rocks are rugged and austere, and after being polished by ice and snow, they are covered with a smooth and clean layer of ice.
Inside the slightly recessed mountainside, one can barely stand, sheltered from the scattered snowflakes, and incidentally protected from the raging cold wind.
Whoosh!
Huo Jixing took off his gray-white fur cloak, shook it gently, and snowflakes fell, covering the ground.
He then turned the fur cloak over, smoothed it out on the ground, leaned against the mountain wall, and plopped down on the cloak.
Huo Jixing hates the cold!
I hate winter.
It brings not only endless torment to the body and mind, but also a cruel test of will.
"Phew!" Huo Jixing stopped complaining and took a deep breath. He stretched out his hands and rubbed them together slowly, a subtle warmth appearing in his palms.
He looked down at the grooves covered with palm-shaped markings, resembling the bark of an old pine tree, filled with solidified ice shards, and understood even more clearly the former body's loathing and fear of Freljord.
This was just the beginning of the scout mission.
Huo Jixing licked his chapped lips, took out a water pouch from his waist, and poured the icy water mixed with ice crystals into his mouth.
In an instant, the biting cold penetrated his soul, dispelling his physical fatigue and refreshing him considerably.
Unpacking his bag, Huo Jixing took out some hard, dry rations, ground them with his teeth, and swallowed them in small bites, trying to absorb as much nutrition as possible.
The dry food was coarse and hard, looking like a mixture of flatbread, vegetables, and dried meat solidified together.
The taste is ordinary, but it can effectively replenish the energy consumed.
Huo Jixing ate while observing his surroundings.
Counting the time, this was his fourth day in Freljord. Apart from the Noxian scout squad, he hadn't seen a single person along the way, as if he had entered a cold and desolate land.
However, the Noxian scouts still proceeded cautiously, promptly disposing of any remaining traces along the way.
The break was short, and one after another, Noxian scouts got up.
Huo Jixing swallowed the last mouthful of dry rations, picked up his cloak, put it back on, and looked up at the icy world before him.
The cold wind still blows, and snow falls softly across the mountains, covering the Iron Thorn Mountains.
Although we have entered the Freljord region, the spire mountain range stretches across the Noxian border and extends deep into this northern frozen land.
Within sight, snow-capped mountains stretched endlessly, one after another, like the spine of a dragon, extending into the distance with a majestic and magnificent presence.
This is a magnificent scene I never actually saw in my previous life, but now I'm used to it.
Just as everyone was about to leave, the sudden sound of scattered footsteps broke the tranquility beneath the snow.
Huo Jixing turned his head and saw that Mu Er was hurrying over from the deep snow, an excited smile on his weathered face.
Moor, a member of the Noxian scout squad, is calm and friendly.
The biting wind enveloped the burly figure and poured into the sunken hill.
"Corporal!" Moore stepped over the crowd, walked up to Eric, and said breathlessly, "Found something good!"
Upon hearing this, Eric, who was leaning against the mountain wall, raised his eyebrows slightly, looked at the excited Mur in front of him, and then looked up at the snowy sky, pondering in his heart.
He knew Moore's character; he wouldn't speak without reason. Since it's a good product, it's probably pretty much the same.
"Let's go take a look!" Eric looked around at everyone and spoke in a deep voice.
Fine, scattered footsteps were imprinted on the pristine snow, following the trail left by Mur and extending straight to the other side of the hill.
The snow-covered ground, with its scattered cedar trees resembling dark green dye, is dotted across the pristine white snow.
Huo Jixing remained at the very back of the group, his eyes scanning the surroundings warily.
Not far in front of him, Eric and Moore were crouching down, examining the marks left on the snow and talking quietly.
"Are they some kind of animal footprints?" Huo Jixing caught a glimpse of the tracks on the snow out of the corner of his eye and pondered to himself, "But those footprints are far too huge?"
Snowflakes danced wildly, seemingly without end, painting and eroding the world.
During the time it took Mur to travel back and forth, the snow still couldn't cover the footprints, indicating that the animal that left the footprints was quite large.
Huo Jixing searched his memory for all the animal impressions, comparing them with the footprints he saw before him. It seemed that only giant animals such as elephants and rhinoceroses could vaguely match them.
"It's a snow boar!"
At some point, DeWitt walked to Hojixing's side and spoke in a deep voice.
"Get ready to begin the hunt!"
"This thing is a rare find in the frozen north; at least it means we won't have to eat that hard, tasteless, and terrible dry rations anymore."
The Noxian scouts set off again, following the remaining trails deeper into the cedar forest.
On the frozen wasteland of Freljord, there is almost no other vegetation except for cedars, which remain tall and straight despite the ravages of the cold wind and snow.
But as they ventured deeper into the cedar forest, Huo Jixing's expression gradually became serious.
At first glance, some rough cedar trunks are broken and fallen to the ground, with only a few dark green leaves remaining on the branches.
Occasionally, one can see some grotesque marks on the trunk and branches, as if they had been fiercely bitten by some giant animal.
"Hey, Star, did you hear something?" DeWitt approached, his expression incredibly grave beneath his cloak.
"I heard you." Huo Jixing nodded, his gaze fixed straight ahead.
Strange and unusual sounds mingled with the howling, bone-chilling wind, echoing above the forest.
At the same time, at the very front of the scout team, Eric stretched out his hand high and waved it forward.
Huo Jixing gripped his greyish-white cloak tightly and, together with DeWitt, carefully trudged through the snow, following the shadows cast by the cedar trees, slowly making their way to the side of the group.
Not only the two of them, but the other Noxian scouts also resembled gray-white worker ants, forming a fan shape around Eric and slowly converging on the target area.
"What is that thing!?"
Behind the towering cedar tree, Huo Jixing's figure seemed to blend into the snow, his gaze fixed on the distance, his expression revealing undisguised horror.
"This... wild... boar??"
