Working at an otherworldly junkyard, making a fortune by collecting trash.
Chapter 2, First Time Cleaning Up the Trash
Before the morning light could penetrate the gap in the curtains, Chen Chen lay in bed, his eyelids as heavy as lead, yet he felt no sleepiness.
The excitement of learning last night that he had gotten a job in another dimension was still coursing through his veins. He tossed and turned, staring at the ceiling, not even noticing Ji Yunli quietly getting up and leaving for work in the early morning. His mind was filled with words that challenged his understanding, such as "garbage disposal center," "monthly salary of 20,000," and "time-space conversion."
Just as he was drifting off to sleep, a mechanical "beep beep beep" sound suddenly exploded in his ears, cold and clear: "The first batch of garbage is about to arrive. Employee Chen Chen, please get to your work station as soon as possible."
Chen Chen suddenly opened her eyes, her heart pounding wildly, and she instantly became fully awake.
He rushed into the bathroom barefoot without even putting on his shoes, hastily relieved himself, and then splashed cold water on his face—the icy touch brought him back to his senses. In the mirror, his eyes were bloodshot from staying up all night, but he couldn't hide his excitement.
"Go to work." He took a deep breath and spoke softly, recalling yesterday's words.
There was none of the nauseating dizziness of the first time the time and space shifted; the scene before me only flickered slightly, and the next second, the familiar gray space unfolded.
Beneath their feet was a smooth metal floor, and in the distance, a huge conveyor belt was slowly starting up. Above their heads, a pitch-black hole suddenly appeared in the boundless gray sky, from which countless things were falling continuously. Because of the distance, only blurry outlines could be seen, like swirling gray clouds.
Chen Chen immediately took out his work ID from the spatial button on his wrist—a light blue card floated in his palm, with the name "Chen Chen" and the "Junior Cleaner" badge on it shimmering. He casually clipped the card to his collar and silently said, "Take out the tools."
With a soft hum, a silver-white mechanical vehicle appeared before us. It looked like an enlarged version of a bulldozer, but it was more sophisticated than the most advanced engineering vehicles on Earth: the body lines were smooth, there were no superfluous parts, the bucket at the front was two meters wide and one meter high, and the edges gleamed with a cold metallic luster. A line of unfamiliar text was printed on the vehicle, which was probably the logo of a "waste disposal company".
He walked around the car and found that the operation was extremely simple—the driver's seat was in the middle of the car, with only three physical buttons labeled "Start," "Stop," and "Emergency Brake," while all other functions were controlled by voice.
Chen Chen got into the driver's seat, which automatically adjusted to his body shape. The holographic screen in front of him lit up, displaying a 3D map of the "Pending Cleaning Area," "Destruction Area," and "Temporary Storage Area." Red dots were flashing continuously, marking the locations where the trash had fallen.
"Proceed to the area to be cleared," he tried to give the instruction.
The machine started smoothly without any bumps, moving slowly but precisely, and soon arrived at the garbage dump.
Chen Chen stared at the "garbage" in front of him, but suddenly froze—it was not the scrap metal or broken parts he had imagined, but huge livestock, their fur cleaned off, their round bodies piled together like a small mountain.
"This is... a pig?" He frowned, pressed the stop button, opened the car door, and jumped out.
Upon closer inspection, it became clear that these pigs were much larger than domestic pigs on Earth. An adult man standing next to them would only reach the pigs' backs, and each one was estimated to weigh over 500 pounds.
Their skin was smooth, with only a cut on their abdomen, making them look no different from normal live pigs, except that they were motionless, as if they had lost their vital signs.
"Did it die of disease? Or was it poisoned?" Chen Chen squatted down and touched the pig's skin—it was ice-cold and had no temperature; it was indeed a dead pig.
It's really strange that so many pigs fell neatly from another dimension and were treated as garbage.
A thought suddenly popped into his mind: If these pigs are not sick or poisonous, how much would this endless herd of pigs be worth on Earth?
He immediately remembered the spatial button on his wrist and called out to the air, "Little Bu."
"I'm here. How can I help you?" the familiar electronic voice said.
"Can I put these pigs... this garbage into the spatial button? I don't want to destroy it for now." Chen Chen's voice carried a hint of expectation.
"Sure, employee Chen Chen. But please note that there is a spatial isolation barrier in the area to be cleaned. You need to use tools to transfer the trash to the temporary storage area first. Only after the barrier is removed can you put it into the spatial button." Xiao Bu's answer relieved Chen Chen.
"Okay, thank you, Xiao Bu."
"It's my pleasure, Xiao Bu."
For the next few hours, Chen Chen focused intently on operating the machine. He first divided the pigs into areas, then carefully scooped them up with a bucket—afraid of damaging the "goods"—before smoothly transporting them to the temporary storage area.
The holographic screen automatically counts, and the number increases by 1 for each pig moved. At first, he would pay attention to the number, but as time went on, the mechanical repetition numbed him, and he only knew to keep "shoveling up - transporting - putting down - storing in the space button".
The capacity of the storage button far exceeded his expectations. After more than 5,000 pigs were put in, the screen showed that it occupied less than one-tenth of the space.
However, the long period of focus left him exhausted, and what was worse was the hunger—it had been a day and a half since he arrived here in the morning, and the Earthling's biological clock had left his stomach empty, and he barely had the strength to speak.
"I wonder if Yunli will worry..." He touched his pocket, but his phone still had no signal. Thinking about his sudden "disappearance," Ji Yunli must be extremely worried, and a wave of guilt washed over him.
"Off work." He gave the order without hesitation.
The gray space in front of me vanished instantly, replaced by the familiar warm yellow light of my own living room.
As soon as Chen Chen stood up, he heard a suppressed sob—Ji Yunli was sitting on the sofa, clutching her phone, tears streaming down her face, her eyes swollen and red like walnuts.
Hearing the noise, Ji Yunli suddenly looked up and froze when she saw Chen Chen suddenly appear. Her lips trembled as she stammered, "You...you..." Tears were still on her face, but she forgot to let them fall.
"Honey, don't be scared, let me explain." Chen Chen quickly went over, squatted down in front of her, held her cold hand, and told her in detail how he encountered the garbage company, got the job, and cleaned up the garbage through time and space. He didn't even hide the fact that he had a monthly salary of 20,000 yuan and the pig in the space button.
Ji Yunli's crying gradually stopped, and her eyes grew brighter and brighter as she listened. When she heard about the alternate dimension, she couldn't help but cover her mouth and exclaim "Wow!" She would pat Chen Chen's arm from time to time and say, "Brother Chen, you're amazing! This is like something out of a novel!" Her tone was full of pride, and the worry in her eyes was replaced by excitement, giving Chen Chen plenty of emotional support.
Chen Chen felt a warmth in his heart. He tightened his grip on her hand and looked earnestly into her eyes: "Yunli, this secret is only between the two of us. We absolutely cannot let a third person know. You understand the saying 'possessing a treasure invites trouble.' If others find out, I might be captured and experimented on like a monster. You... won't betray me, right?"
Ji Yunli nodded vigorously, her fingertips turning slightly white with nervousness: "Don't worry, Brother Chen, you know I'm tight-lipped! My classmates and colleagues used to complain to me about you, but I haven't said a word to anyone. Besides, if anyone dares to make a move on you, I'll be the first to object! I won't mention it to my parents either; I can't let them worry."
Seeing the sincerity in her eyes, Chen Chen was completely relieved. Ji Yunli was always calm and capable of keeping secrets, which was why he was willing to tell her everything without reservation.
Just then, Ji Yunli suddenly winked mischievously and teased him, "Now that you've had such a wonderful adventure, you're sure to reach the pinnacle of life. Will you forget about me then and marry a rich and beautiful woman?"
Chen Chen smiled and reached out to press his hand against her lips, his tone serious: "Don't talk nonsense. My extraordinary encounter was meant to give you a good life, to make you a rich and beautiful woman. If I have any ulterior motives, you can tell everyone the secret and have me arrested for research, how about that?"
Ji Yunli laughed at his antics and slapped his hand away: "Who wants you to get arrested! I'm still waiting to make a fortune with you!"
The two looked at each other and smiled, all the tension and worry caused by their "disappearance" dissipating in their laughter.
Before the laughter could stop, the phone in the living room suddenly rang, breaking the warm atmosphere.
Ji Yunli glanced at the caller ID and her expression changed slightly: "It's Fatty's call."
She quickly answered the phone, but before she could speak, the fat man's anxious voice burst through the receiver: "Ji Yunli! Have you found Chen Chen? I've searched all the internet cafes he used to frequent, the billiard halls, and even the homes of his childhood friends, but no one has seen him! Do you have any news? If all else fails, we can go to the police station and ask!"
Ji Yunli then suddenly remembered that Chen Chen had been "missing" for a day and a half.
Yesterday, she discovered that Chen Chen hadn't come home and his cell phone was switched off. In a panic, she took leave from work and searched for him everywhere. When Fatty and Teresa Teng found out, they rushed over to help, and they spent the whole day running around.
This morning, 24 hours later, she went to the police station to report the case, but the case has not been dropped yet.
She glanced at Chen Chen furtively, her eyes conveying a sense of helplessness that said, "You've gotten yourself into trouble."
Chen Chen realized he had made a mistake, touched his nose, gave an embarrassed smile, and took the phone: "Fatty, it's me."
"Chen Chen?! Where the hell have you been?!" The fat man's voice suddenly rose, filled with rage. "Do you know your girlfriend is about to cry? We've been looking for you for a day and a half, and even called the police! What the hell have you been doing?!"
Chen Chen quickly apologized: "I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry. I found a job. Yesterday was my first day at work, but the company suddenly had an urgent task that required me to work overtime, and my phone was out of battery. I didn't have time to tell you, and I'm sorry for making you worry." He didn't dare to tell the truth and could only make up an excuse.
"Overtime? What kind of job do you have that requires you to work a day and a half overtime? Your phone was dead, didn't you know to borrow someone else's phone to make a call?" The fat man was still angry, cursing him a few times, but his tone gradually softened, "Alright, it's good that you're okay. Next time something like this happens, let Ji Yunli know first, don't make us worry unnecessarily. We didn't dare tell your parents this time, afraid they'd be anxious."
"Okay, okay, I'll definitely be more careful next time." Chen Chen quickly agreed, and promised to treat Fatty and Teresa Teng to dinner next time before hanging up the phone.
After hanging up, Ji Yunli quickly called Deng Lijun to let her know she was safe and apologized at length. The two then rushed to the police station after changing their clothes—to drop the case and receive a verbal reprimand from the officers.
As they walked out of the police station, the police officer's words of advice, "Contact your family immediately if anything happens in the future," still echoed in their ears. The two looked at each other and couldn't help but laugh—from "missing person" to "misunderstanding," the experience of the past day and a half was more bizarre than a TV drama.
Back home, Chen Chen remembered the pig in her spatial storage, and her eyes lit up: "Oh right, I haven't shown you the 'trash' I cleaned up today!"
He had Ji Yunli move the furniture in the center of the living room to the wall, making a large open space. He then laid a huge GG banner that he had picked up from the company on the floor, and then silently recited "Take out a pig" in front of the space button.
With a flash of silver light, a large pig weighing over 500 pounds appeared in the living room, taking up most of the open space.
Ji Yunli leaned closer, her eyes widening in surprise: "Such a big pig! And it doesn't smell at all, it even has a faint grassy scent! It looks so clean!" She reached out and touched the pig's skin; it was so smooth it didn't look like a dead pig.
"If this pig were edible, it would definitely be incredibly delicious! Braised pork, steamed pork with rice flour, pig's trotters with soybeans..." She became more and more greedy as she spoke, swallowing her saliva, her eyes full of anticipation.
"I don't know if it's edible or not." Chen Chen frowned. "The description says it's 'waste' from Tata Corporation's products, but I can't see where it's been 'used'."
"Let me see!" Ji Yunli became interested, found a pair of dishwashing gloves in the kitchen, put them on, squatted down and carefully examined the pig's body.
She first checked the pig's limbs and back, and found nothing abnormal. Then she went around to the pig's abdomen and tried to pry open the pig's belly—unexpectedly, the belly was loose and opened with a gentle pry.
"Huh?" Ji Yunli exclaimed in surprise, "The ribs are gone! And the pig's tail is gone too!"
Chen Chen quickly went over to take a look—sure enough, the place where the ribs should have been in the pig's abdominal cavity was empty, with only the complete internal organs remaining. The heart, liver, intestines, and stomach were all there and very clean, as if someone had deliberately removed the ribs and tail, and the rest had been treated as garbage.
Ji Yunli's face fell instantly. She pouted and said in a disappointed tone, "Why did they have to take the ribs away... I love ribs the most."
"It's okay," Chen Chen said, ruffling her hair. "Tomorrow I'll go to the market to buy you pork ribs, the best spare ribs, and make you braised pork ribs."
"No need," Ji Yunli shook her head, but quickly perked up again, pointing to the pig's hind leg, "This pig's hind leg is so thick, it would definitely be delicious as braised pork hock! And the large intestine, after cleaning it, we can make stir-fried large intestine, just thinking about it makes my mouth water!"
"But it's not certain whether this pig is safe to eat or not." Chen Chen poured cold water on the idea. "Tomorrow I'll take one to my college classmate. He works at a food testing agency now, so I'll ask him to test it and see if it's poisonous or has any strange bacteria."
"Alright." Ji Yunli's eyes dimmed again as she looked at the large pig in front of her, full of regret. "Such a good pig, it would be such a waste if we couldn't eat it."
Seeing her disappointed look, Chen Chen couldn't help but laugh, deliberately keeping her in suspense: "If the test goes well, do you know how many heads I still have in my spatial storage?"
Ji Yunli looked up at him, her eyes filled with doubt: "How many?"
"More than five thousand heads," Chen Chen said, emphasizing each word.
"More than five thousand?!" Ji Yunli's eyes widened instantly, and her voice rose eight octaves. "If we could eat them all, wouldn't we be rich?!" She grabbed Chen Chen's arm and jumped up excitedly. Her greedy appearance made Chen Chen burst into laughter.
"Whether we can send them out or not depends on tomorrow's test results," Chen Chen said with a smile, but a glimmer of hope rose in his heart—if these pigs really were fine, this might be the first step in changing his life.
As night deepened, the two put the pig back into their spatial storage, tidied up the living room, and then prepared to rest.
Lying in bed, Ji Yunli was still excitedly planning, "If pigs can make money, we'll buy a bigger house first." Chen Chen listened to her words with a smile on his lips and gradually drifted off to sleep.
