Chapter 195 Military Shooting Range
"Zhang Anbang, I suddenly realize your name sounds familiar. Where have I seen it before?" Gu Xiaonan thought for a moment, "I remember now, the lyricist and composer of those two very popular songs recently is also named Zhang Anbang."
"Could it be you? Or do you just happen to share the same name? After all, quite a few people have the name Anbang, especially in the north."
Zhang Anbang smiled. "It's me. What's wrong? Doesn't it look like me?"
"Haha, no," Gu Xiaonan smiled, "Both songs are very nice, I especially like 'When That Day Comes'."
Every time my comrades and I listen to it, we unconsciously tense up and straighten our backs. We feel that this is not just a song, but an order and a mission.
It resonated deeply with me; it was the kind of feeling that ignited my blood.
Zhang Anbang felt a little guilty, but he didn't show it at all. "Thank you for liking this song."
Gu Xiaonan waved her hand, "No, I should thank you for writing this song. This song matches our outfits very well, and the song 'To Our Comrades' is also very good."
I was particularly moved when I saw those veterans who usually shed blood and sweat but never tears singing that song and crying their eyes out when they retired.
I originally thought the lyricist and composer of these two songs were members of a performing arts troupe who had spent a long time experiencing life at the grassroots level, but I never expected them to be written by someone like you, a frontline combat officer.
Zhang Anbang was a little surprised. This girl was quite capable. "How did you figure out that I was a front-line combat officer?"
After all, the different shoulder insignia clearly distinguishes people who are not from the cultural troupe, but the shoulder insignia of government departments and front-line troops are the same.
The standard uniforms of that era did not have armbands, chest badges, nameplates, or qualification badges; these things were introduced in the Type 07 uniform.
"It's very simple. First of all, your temperament is not right. Secondly, when we shook hands in the commander's office just now, there were hard calluses on the web of your right hand and the side of your index finger. Your knuckles were thick and your fingertips had thin calluses."
There were marks on his palms and the pads of his thumbs, very obvious trigger calluses, rifle butt calluses, and knife handle calluses, as noticeable as a recruit's scars. It's highly unlikely that an officer would have such marks.
"Impressive, Major Gu, your observation is meticulous. But you also have calluses on your trigger and butt, so your marksmanship must be quite good as well."
Zhang Anbang admired the girl; she had noticed all of this in less than two seconds of shaking hands—that was quite impressive.
"That's right. By the way, there's not much to see in this compound. They're all pretty much the same. How about we go to the shooting range? We have a lot of quotas to meet, and many of our staff don't like practicing shooting."
When the topic of shooting came up, Gu Xiaonan's eyes lit up, and she offered some suggestions.
Zhang Anbang, who didn't have anything else to do, nodded in agreement and said, "Sure, it'll be a good opportunity to see Major Gu's marksmanship."
Normally, the procedures for indoor firing ranges in the military are more stringent and the process is more detailed than that for outdoor firing ranges. The entire process is planned, approved, registered, safe, and accounted for.
In other words, the indoor firing range is only open to internal staff, plans, and approvals; prior application is required to use it.
However, the military also has small indoor shooting ranges for the use of its leaders and departments. Since Gu Xiaonan brought it up, there must be no problem.
More than half an hour later, the two appeared at the indoor shooting range. The indoor shooting range was not large, only about 30 meters long and 10 meters wide, with a total of six targets.
There is usually only one administrator watching over it, who is an old sergeant from the civil service class.
The ground lines were clearly marked, and pistols and rifles were neatly arranged in the gun cabinet in the corner. Overall, it was clean and quiet.
Zhang Anbang noticed several small button boxes labeled with numbers standing by the wall. Each target position had a thin steel wire rope stretched from the shooting position to the end of the target wall, with a small iron clamp hanging in the middle.
"Wow, your firing range is pretty advanced, you've even used teleportation targets."
It's no wonder Zhang Anbang was surprised. This kind of thing is generally useless in later generations; even firing a BB gun can result in a teleportation target. But these days, very few people use this kind of thing.
Although this thing is technically not difficult at all, just a small motor, a slide rail and a switch, it is not usually installed in the small firing ranges of the army.
Small firing ranges like this aren't used very often, and they're not far away, so it's not worth installing this thing and having to maintain it. Nowadays, military equipment is quite basic; as long as it can fire and works, that's enough.
Although Zhang Anbang only made a comment without asking any questions, Gu Xiaonan offered an explanation: "This was set up by my colleagues at the institute. Sometimes several people come together to practice shooting, and this is very convenient."
They chatted as they walked, and the two had become somewhat acquainted.
"Rifle or pistol?" Gu Xiaonan pointed to the gun cabinet with the door already open. There weren't many guns in there, just three types of rifles: the Type 81, the Type 81, and the Type 95.
There were an extra type of pistol: the Type 54, the Type 64 (mostly used by female officers), the Type 77, and the Type 92. In addition, there was also a Type 56 submachine gun, probably because the leaders were nostalgic for the old days.
Not only are there few styles, but the quantity is also limited, with most having only three or four pieces. The Type 95 rifle and Type 92 pistol have only two pieces each, while the Type 56 assault rifle has the fewest, with only one piece.
Zhang Anbang glanced at the firearms in the gun cabinet, smiled, and said, "I'm fine with anything. You decide. I'll go with whatever you prefer."
"Okay," Gu Xiaonan agreed and turned to get a gun from the gun cabinet.
This 25-meter-long shooting range is not suitable for shooting rifles; it's too close, especially since paper targets are used. It's more of a standard pistol shooting range.
At a distance of 25 meters, shooting a paper target with a rifle is too close. The bullet trajectory is too straight. At most, you can get used to the feel of the gun, but you can't learn anything from it.
Shooting a rifle at this distance is actually quite risky (remember not to try this at home alone).
Rifle bullets have high initial velocity and high hardness. When they hit a wall at a distance of 25 meters, they are almost vertical. The bullets will ricochet, change direction, and fly wildly, which may cause danger.
Of course, this firing range has been modified and no longer carries this risk.
It's a very simple, old-fashioned method: a large wooden board is fixed ten centimeters away from the wall.
Although the bullet pierced through a thin sheet of target paper, it did not cause any significant changes.
However, after the bullet passes through the wooden board, it will slow down, deform, and tumble. After flying through a gap of ten centimeters, its kinetic energy will drop by more than half. At this point, if it hits the back wall, it will basically not bounce up and there is no risk of ricocheting.
Gu Xiaonan quickly returned with two Type 95 rifles and two Type 92 pistols. After placing the pistols on a side table, she said, "How about one magazine for each?"
Zhang Anbang took the Type 95 rifle, pointed the muzzle at the target, first pulled back the bolt to check the chamber, and after confirming that there were no bullets, he put the safety on.
He then picked up the full magazine, clicked it into place under the grip, and reached his left hand to the butt of the stock to switch the fire selector from 0 to 2 (automatic fire).
The safety and fire selector levers on the Type 95 rifle are poorly designed, located at the very end of the stock, making adjustments difficult and requiring you to switch hands to find the lever.
With the Type 95-1, this lever was moved above the grip, making it much more convenient to adjust using only the right thumb during firing.
