On the rest of the journey, the pilgrimage team passed through several more small towns.

Wen Yubai led everyone to keep a low profile throughout, but strange things kept happening one after another.

In every town he visited, the local mayor would approach him, say some flattering words, and then shower him with a generous gift.

We traveled and collected as we went.

These people have serious problems with their thinking.

Isn't it said that the closer you get to Beiling, the poorer you become? Why are these people so eager to give you money?

Wen Yubai frowned slightly, truly unable to understand.

The priests were utterly bewildered, seeing their holy son's face as cold as ice.

In their view, they received excellent treatment along the way, with town mayors personally greeting and presenting them with generous gifts in every place they visited, making them feel extremely honored and respectable.

Why is the Holy Son still unhappy?

Everyone was puzzled, but the priest Xiao Chuan had a flash of inspiration.

"The closer we get to the North Ridge, the harder it becomes for ordinary people to make a living. Yet we, as clergy, have been receiving rites all the way. Our Holy Son sees the suffering of all people, while we indulge in comfort. It is painful for us."

"Look, the Holy Son has been eating less and less these past few days. He's clearly in a bad mood and can't eat."

His words instantly enlightened all the priests.

Everyone suddenly realized what had happened and felt deeply ashamed.

The Son of God asked them to shed their divine robes and immerse themselves in the lives of ordinary people so that they could calmly understand the suffering of common folk.

But they didn't take it seriously and didn't try to understand it at all.

"No wonder the Holy Son didn't adopt our proposal; it must be because we put it into practice."

"Yes, we're thinking too superficially."

After realizing their mistake, the priests dared not slack off again. They diligently wandered the streets and alleys, chatting with the ragged people and listening to their complaints.

As for the gifts and offerings sent by the town mayors along the way, the priests, following the instructions of the Holy Son, distributed the money to several wealthy local merchants.

Although they did not understand this approach, it was because they could not keep up with the Son's level of thinking; they believed that the Son must have other plans.

The wealthy merchants from several towns already had connections with each other. Even if they couldn't grasp the profound meaning of the temple, they could see that everyone else was following along, and if they didn't, what would they miss out on?

For a businessman, the most important thing is to seize opportunities.

So he gritted his teeth and started doing good deeds in the area, distributing food and clothing.

Of course, they also sensibly proclaimed that "this is a gift from the temple, a blessing of light."

Wen Yubai, who was still moving forward, sighed with relief. Fortunately, he was clever and the priests were obedient. They spent all the money and it didn't do any good for the temple.

The mayors of several towns also remarked that it was fortunate they were quick-witted and the businessmen were obedient, spending all the money instead of just thinking about immediate benefits.

The team finally entered Beiling.

The mountains here are not steep, but they stretch endlessly, one after another.

There were no regular roads along the way, only rugged dirt paths worn out by people, with rocks and gullies on both sides.

Wen Yubai's destination was Stone Village, the most remote and impoverished village in Beiling. They had bought some supplies in a nearby town beforehand, and with the gifts from the town mayors along the way, it was enough.

It mainly consisted of food, clothing, medicine, and farm tools.

As they approached Stone Village, Wen Yubai deliberately stopped the troop and gave the following instructions:

"Everyone must change out of their clerical attire and conceal their identities. Once in the village, they can only distribute supplies and help the villagers."

"It is forbidden to preach the doctrines of Light, to proclaim divine grace, to mention the Temple of Light even once, and even more so to try to recruit villagers to convert to the faith."

The priests looked bewildered. If they couldn't even mention the temple while concealing their identities, what kind of doctrine were they preaching?

"Your Holiness, will we still be able to collect faith this way?" someone asked timidly.

Wen Yubai couldn't think of a good reason for a moment, so he could only say with a straight face, "You'll understand later."

The priests looked at each other, puzzled, but still nodded obediently.

Upon arriving at Stone Village, Wen Yubai found the village even more dilapidated than he had imagined.

The village is nestled in a depression between two rocky mountains. It is small, with only a few dozen households scattered around.

Most of the villagers were dressed in tattered and thin clothes, with sallow and rough complexions. They suffered from the cold mountain winds year-round, and their eyes were vacant. When they saw them, they would only glance at them with a hint of wariness.

Some children were playing on the pebbles, wearing clothes covered in patches. When they saw the group of strangers, they were a little scared and ran home.

The Holy Son found the old village chief of Stone Village and briefly explained his purpose, saying that they were travelers passing through and had brought extra supplies, and wanted to help the villagers free of charge.

The village chief had no reason to refuse and sent two slightly younger men to help.

Wen Yubai found an open space, tidied up a bit, and then had the priests go door-to-door to notify everyone.

The distribution process was quiet. Most villagers simply whispered a thank you and silently accepted the gifts, without showing much enthusiasm or joy.

The priests didn't know what to say.

In the past, the pilgrimages have always had a clear division of labor: some people distribute supplies, some people preach the doctrine and pray for blessings in public, and some people visit homes and recruit new believers.

But now, the Holy Son only allows them to distribute supplies, and forbids them from doing anything else.

A priest instinctively wanted to speak, to say "Light has mercy on all beings," but remembering the Son's command, he swallowed the words back.

All the supplies were distributed in less than a day.

The priests stood in the open space, looking at the empty carriage, somewhat bewildered.

The work is done, what's next?

The pilgrimage takes two months to complete before we can return, and it hasn't even been a month yet.

Wen Yubai spent a day wandering around the village and discovered that Stone Village had arable valley soil, but the soil was dry and hard, and it was difficult to cultivate due to the lack of water all year round.

There are no streams or flowing water in the village, and the villagers can only rely on a well, which is barely enough for drinking. Watering the fields is out of the question, and they have to walk a long way to fetch water from the stream at the foot of the mountain.

Looking around the village, all that could be seen were messy, rocky hills that blocked out ventilation and water flow.

In the Land of Light, the days are short and the nights are long. At night, the village has no magical streetlights, and using torches for lighting is wasteful, so basically no one goes out.

When Wen Yubai walks, he uses a sphere of light for illumination, but he can still trip over a stone if he's not careful.

He had an idea.

The next morning, the team was gathered together and divided into two groups.

"You guys go to the valley to the south, move the stones there, clear the land, loosen the hard soil, then fetch water from the foot of the mountain and build a simple reservoir to irrigate the land."

"As for you..."

Wen Yubai faced another group of people, led by the Holy Knight Commander, who were relatively robust.

"First, go help move the boulders in the valley, then clear away the boulders around the village."

Naturally, some people wouldn't want to do this kind of physical labor, but the Holy Son had a serious face, as if this matter was very important, so no one dared to ask any more questions.

In particular, the Paladin Commander had already picked up a shovel. Without thinking too much, he waved his hand, signaling everyone to follow him.

The other two knights exchanged a glance and followed, while the rest of the priests could only follow behind with long faces.

Wen Yubai was satisfied with how unwilling they were to work, as he forced them to.

These jobs are hard and tiring; if you do them for a long time, you'll definitely complain about them.

He acted like a saint, standing around giving orders without doing any work. When they returned to the temple, they exaggerated and told the high priest how he had bullied and enslaved the priests in the North Ridge. The high priest was sure to be dissatisfied with him.

The worse his reputation, the better it makes the protagonist seem.
