Courtyard House: Initial Donation of 50 Million

Chapter 52 Foreigners' Misdeeds and the Dock Incident

The peaceful days were shattered by the terrible news coming from the dock. That day, several dockworkers carried a bloodied young man into Po Chi Lam. The young man was named Ah Qiang, a distant cousin of Pork Wing, and worked as a porter at the "Jardine Matheson" dock, which was run by foreigners.

"Master Huang! Help! Ah Qiang has been caught in the foreigners' machine!" the workers cried out.

Ah Qiang's right arm was a bloody mess, with broken bones protruding, and he was on the verge of death. Huang Feihong and Wang Huanbo immediately did everything they could to help. Wang Huanbo skillfully cleaned the wound, stopped the bleeding, and immobilized it, using the best anti-inflammatory drugs and sutures. But the injury was too severe, and whether they could save his arm was still unknown.

"What's going on?" Wong Fei-hung asked in a deep voice.

The workers recounted the whole story with grief and indignation. It turned out that a large steam crane had been delivered to Jardine Matheson & Co., and the foreign overseer, Jackson, in an effort to meet deadlines, forced the workers to operate it beyond their capacity without providing any safety precautions. While operating it, Ah-Qiang, due to extreme fatigue, accidentally got his arm caught in the conveyor belt. Instead of immediately stopping the machine to rescue him, the overseer berated him for being stupid and delaying the project. It wasn't until other workers forcibly stopped the machine that Ah-Qiang was rescued, but he was already critically injured and on the verge of death.

"Those foreign devils don't treat us like human beings at all!" an old worker cried, tears streaming down his face. "They deduct our wages, beat and verbally abuse us at the drop of a hat! When something happens, they treat us like a dead ant!"

Upon hearing this, Wong Fei-hung clenched his fists, his knuckles turning white. Wang Huanbo's eyes also flashed with a cold light; this was the true face of colonizers!

Just then, a series of arrogant shouts and the sound of boots came from outside the clinic. Several Chinese policemen in trading company uniforms, with short sticks at their waists, escorted a high-nosed, deep-eyed, arrogant red-haired foreigner as he barged in—it was none other than the foreman, Jackson! He held a document in his hand and yelled in broken Chinese, "Which one is Huang Feihong? Where are our Jardine Matheson employees? Hand them over now! He violated operating procedures, damaged the machinery, and must pay compensation!"

The wicked accuse first! They're turning the tables on us! The crowd inside Po Chi Lam was instantly outraged!

"Bullshit!" Pork Wing was the first to jump up, his eyes blazing with fury. "You guys ruined Ah Keung! And you still want to pay compensation? I'll fight you to the death!" He said, and was about to rush forward.

"Stop!" Wong Fei-hung shouted sternly, suppressing his anger as he walked up to Jackson, his eyes blazing. "Mr. Jackson, the injured person is being treated and his life is hanging in the balance. Your men disregarded safety, causing serious injury, and should be responsible for medical expenses and compensation! What makes you talk about compensating for the machine?"

Jackson was momentarily intimidated by Wong Fei-hung's imposing manner, but quickly became even more arrogant, waving the documents around: "Wong Fei-hung? I've heard of you! But here, we foreigners have the highest rules! This is the concession! He doesn't have the final say! I say he's breaking the rules, so he's breaking the rules! Either pay up, or hand him over to the authorities! Otherwise, I'll have the police shut down your clinic!" The police officers behind him also puffed out their chests, acting like bullies.

The atmosphere instantly became tense! The onlookers dared not speak out, for the foreigners in the concession were rampant and domineering, and the government was terrified of them. Where could ordinary people find a place to reason with the authorities?

Wang Huanbo watched this scene coldly, a wave of humiliation from the weakness of the late Qing Dynasty washing over him. He stepped forward, blocking Huang Feihong's path, and said in fluent English, "Mr. Jackson, according to the basic principles of international law, employers have an obligation to provide a safe working environment. Mr. Qiang was injured while working for you. Not only do you not take responsibility, but you also falsely accuse and extort him. This is unacceptable anywhere. If you insist on following the 'rules,' we can ask the lawyer from the British Consulate to speak with us, or we can publish this matter in newspapers such as the *North China Daily News*, letting the public judge whether Jardine Matheson's 'rules' conform to the standards of the civilized world."

His English was fluent and his words were sharp, directly pointing out the other party's weakness—foreigners are most afraid of things getting out of hand and affecting their business reputation, especially if it is exposed in their self-proclaimed "civilized" newspapers.

Jackson was stunned. He hadn't expected this seemingly ordinary Chinese man to be so fluent in English and even know how to invoke public law and media pressure! His expression shifted several times, and he roared, his voice trembling with fear, "You...who are you? How dare you threaten me?"

"I am Master Huang's disciple, Wang Huanbo. A reasonable person." Wang Huanbo's tone was calm, yet carried an undeniable force.

Jackson glanced at the righteous-looking Huang Feihong, then at the unfathomable Wang Huanbo, and then at the angry crowd around him. Knowing he wouldn't get the better of him today, he reluctantly uttered a harsh threat: "Fine! Huang Feihong, Wang Huanbo! I'll remember you! This isn't over! Let's go!" With that, he led the police officers away in a sorry state.

The foreigners left, and everyone breathed a sigh of relief, but their hearts remained heavy. Although Ah Qiang had temporarily saved his life, his arm was crippled, and his future livelihood was in serious jeopardy. The threat from the foreigners hung like a sword of Damocles over their heads.

Huang Feihong looked at Wang Huanbo, his eyes filled with complex emotions—gratitude, relief, and helplessness in the face of the current situation: "Huanbo, we owe you a lot again today. These foreigners…sigh!" He sighed deeply, revealing the powerlessness of a patriot in the face of a humiliating reality.

Wang Huanbo said in a deep voice, "Master, the foreigners bully the weak because our country is weak and our people are poor. Only by striving for self-improvement can we stand tall. We must get justice for A-Qiang!"
