Chapter 31 Night Strike: The Source of Poisonous Fire

The stench of blood hadn't yet dissipated from the church, and the tense atmosphere was like a taut bowstring. Wang Huanbo knew that the gunshots were like a boulder thrown into a still lake, the ripples would spread. He had to acquire enough leverage before more Japanese soldiers could surround them!

"Old Smoker, Shunzi (his injury is stable but he can't do strenuous exercise, yet he insists on participating in command), you take five of the best-trained brothers and come with me!" Wang Huanbo quickly called out the men. "Father John, the church is in your and Miss Yu Mo's hands. Keep the doors tightly shut, and don't open them for anyone who knocks! Unless you hear our agreed-upon signal!"

"Instructor Li, where are you going? It's too dangerous!" Yu Mo asked worriedly.

"Go find something that can keep us alive!" Wang Huanbo didn't say much. He inspected the captured Japanese uniforms, picked out a few that fit his team members, and changed into the sergeant's uniform himself. Although it was hasty, the darkness and chaos were enough to pass them off as genuine.

"Instructor, are we... going to impersonate Japanese soldiers?" a clever soldier nicknamed "Monkey" asked excitedly and nervously.

"That's right! Remember, from now on, I am Sergeant Akiyama, and you are my soldiers. Speak as little as possible, and follow my hand signals!" Wang Huanbo used his [Japanese Proficiency] skill to growl a few everyday commands, making sure his team members remembered a few key words. He then took out some compressed biscuits and canned beef from his system space and distributed them to everyone. "Hurry up and replenish your energy!"

Under the cover of night and ruins, the group slipped silently out of the church's backyard. Wang Huanbo's goal was clear—he remembered that the original plot mentioned a temporary field supply depot set up by the Japanese army nearby, storing ammunition, fuel, and vehicle parts! This was the "prophet" advantage granted by the system.

The streets were deathly silent and dangerous, with sporadic gunshots and flashes of light in the distance serving as a reminder of the city's suffering. Wang Huanbo, relying on his superior tactical awareness and the stealth abilities granted by his Intermediate Close Combat Proficiency, led his squad to avoid major patrol routes, moving like ghosts among the ruins.

Along the way, they encountered a small group of stragglers of Japanese soldiers who were looting and committing violence. Wang Huanbo didn't avoid them; instead, he went to meet them and, in fluent Kyoto-accented Japanese, demanded sharply, "Hey! Which unit are you from? What are you doing here instead of on guard duty in your designated area?!"

The Japanese soldiers were intimidated by his "sergeant" title and perfect accent, and quickly stood at attention to report that they were ordered to "sweep away the remaining enemy." Wang Huanbo pretended to be on patrol, and taking advantage of their unpreparedness, he and his team suddenly attacked, quickly killing the five Japanese soldiers with daggers and bayonets without making much of a commotion.

[Ding! Five Japanese soldiers killed, 150 rounds of Arisaka rifle ammunition, 3 hand grenades, and 20 liters of gasoline (stored in storage).]

"Keep going!" Wang Huanbo calmly ordered, a surge of joy welling up inside him. Gasoline! This was exactly what they desperately needed!

Finally, they arrived at their target location—a school playground that had been partially destroyed by bombing. It was roughly surrounded by sandbags and barbed wire. There were two Japanese sentries at the entrance, and inside, one could vaguely see stacks of wooden crates and oil drums, as well as two Japanese trucks that had broken down!

"Monkey, you and I will take out the sentry from the side. Old Smoker, take the others and be on guard, ready to provide backup," Wang Huanbo instructed in a low voice.

Using the shadows as cover, Wang Huanbo and the monkey approached like raccoons. When they were a dozen meters away from the sentries, Wang Huanbo made a gesture, and the two simultaneously threw their daggers! A flash of cold light, and the throats of the two sentries were precisely pierced, and they fell to the ground without uttering a sound.

"Quick!" Wang Huanbo waved his hand, and the team quickly infiltrated the storage site.

What they saw made everyone gasp! The wooden crates contained crates of Type 38 rifle bullets and grenades, as well as several crates of melon grenades! The oil drums contained precious gasoline and diesel! More importantly, next to the two broken-down trucks, there were many repair tools and spare parts—tires, spark plugs, belts, and even a spare engine!

"We're rich! Instructor!" the monkey exclaimed excitedly.

"Stop talking nonsense! Take as much as you can! Prioritize spare parts, fuel, and lightweight ammunition!" Wang Huanbo suppressed his excitement as he directed the operation, frantically stuffing everything he could see into the system space! Spare parts, fuel, boxes of grenades, bullets... the 10000 cubic meter capacity of the system space proved to be a huge advantage at this moment!

At the same time, he also instructed his team members to carry as much as possible. Soon, everyone was carrying boxes of ammunition and bags of spare parts.

"Withdraw!" Seeing that the move was nearly complete, Wang Huanbo decisively gave the order. Before leaving, he glanced at the remaining supplies, a ruthless glint in his eyes. He took out two Type 97 hand grenades (impact fuses) captured from the Japanese soldiers, carefully set them as booby traps, and hid them behind oil drums and under ammunition boxes. He wanted to give those who came after him a "big gift"!

The team, laden with a bountiful loot, quickly retraced their steps. As they neared the church, they heard a violent explosion and a towering flash of fire coming from the direction of the supply depot! The booby trap had worked!

"Well done, instructor!" Old Smoker grinned.

Wang Huanbo remained vigilant. The explosion would attract more Japanese soldiers; he had to return to the church as soon as possible to reinforce its defenses and implement the next step of the plan!
