Marriage in the 1970s: The Political Commissar's Contract Wife
Chapter 27 Wedding Night
Fang Chu was like a traveler who had been parched for a long time and received timely rain, or a pilgrim who had finally achieved his wish. He asked Zhi Xia for her several times with extreme tenderness and uncontrollable desire.
Only when the sky outside the window began to lighten did he finally embrace the already unconscious Zhi Xia and fall into a deep sleep. By then, it was nearly midnight.
The next morning, Fang Chu woke up on time, thanks to her biological clock.
Morning light filtered through the gaps in the curtains, softly illuminating Zhixia's sleeping face. Her breathing was even, her long eyelashes casting quiet shadows beneath her eyes. She had shed yesterday's radiance and the aloofness of her waking state, appearing exceptionally serene and obedient.
Fang Chu felt a surge of tenderness in his heart and couldn't help but lean down and place a very light and precious kiss on her smooth forehead.
He carefully pulled his numb arm out, tiptoed to put on his military uniform, and took one last deep look at the person sleeping peacefully on the bed before heading out to work with mixed feelings (satisfaction, guilt, and worry).
Zhi Xia slept until the sun was high in the sky, and didn't wake up until almost 10 a.m.
In the instant she regained consciousness, she sensed something was wrong. She shifted her body, and felt an unusual, unobstructed smoothness against the skin beneath the blanket. She sat bolt upright and looked down—she was completely naked!
"Ah!" she gasped, startled, and quickly wrapped herself tightly in the blanket. Her heart pounded, and countless chaotic thoughts flashed through her mind.
But then, she forced herself to calm down and carefully examined her body.
strangeness……
Aside from a slight headache from the hangover and a vague, indescribable unease somewhere in my body, there was no severe pain, discomfort, or any marks that might have been left from rough treatment, as I had expected. I felt clean and refreshed, even with a... lazy, satisfied feeling?
She frowned, trying hard to recall everything from last night, but her memory only went back to those three glasses of strong liquor and the vague impression of her head spinning and her mind going blank.
It seems... he didn't sleep here yesterday.
This realization inexplicably relieved her, yet a vague and inexplicable emotion swept over her. She naturally attributed her "health" to Fang Chu's "propriety," assuming that he had gone to sleep in another room out of consideration for her wishes.
She let out a soft sigh, suppressing the strange feeling in her heart, and began to look for her clothes, preparing to get up. Little did she know that the red candle of the previous night had burned all night, witnessing a gentle yet enduring storm.
At noon, Fang Chu, unusually, managed to squeeze in some time to rush back from the army base. His heart was pounding with anxiety. He both looked forward to seeing Zhi Xia and dreaded seeing her angry, crying, or even colder towards him because of what happened last night.
He pushed open the courtyard gate and saw Zhixia sitting under the jujube tree in the yard, holding a book in her hand. Sunlight filtered through the branches and leaves, casting dappled light on her. Her expression was calm, even carrying a hint of languor from a hangover, without any of the intense emotions he had expected.
She didn't make a scene...
Has she... forgiven me?
Are you willing to let go of the past and live a good life with me?
This realization exploded in Fang Chu's mind like a dazzling firework, instantly overwhelming him with immense joy, and causing the corners of his mouth to involuntarily turn upwards.
He walked over quickly, his voice carrying a lightness and caution he himself was unaware of: "Are you... alright? Are you feeling unwell?" He asked subtly, but his gaze involuntarily lingered on her neck and other areas, searching for any possible marks that might belong to him.
Zhixia looked up from her book, rubbed her still slightly throbbing temples, and said in a flat tone with a hint of natural complaint, "It's nothing, just a bit of a headache." She completely failed to grasp the deeper meaning behind his question.
Upon hearing this, Fang Chu immediately offered solicitously, "Then let me massage your head? It will make you feel better."
"No need," Zhixia shook her head, politely declining his offer. "I'll just go back and lie down for a while."
"Okay." Fang Chu readily agreed, then asked with concern, "Are you hungry? I'll go make you something to eat?"
"No need, I just ate something, I'm not hungry." Zhixia waved a piece of pastry next to her.
"Then...you should go lie down and not stay here in the wind." Fang Chu's tone was so gentle it could melt your heart.
"Hmm." Zhixia responded, closed the book, stood up, and indeed felt a little weak, so she obediently walked into the house.
As Fang Chu watched her obediently leave, the joy in his heart almost overflowed.
He felt that this brand new day was so bright and sunny, and even the air smelled sweet. He was completely unaware that this "harmony" and "peace" were built on such a huge and fragile misunderstanding.
As soon as afternoon training ended, Fang Chu went straight to Li Yunxiao without even changing his clothes. His face still held an undisguised smugness of a newlywed man. He lowered his voice and said succinctly, "Get me some family planning supplies."
Li Yunxiao was taken aback at first, then reacted, his face immediately filled with a teasing and admiring smile, and he punched him on the shoulder hard: "Hey! Not bad, Political Commissar Fang! You've won over such a beautiful wife so quickly? You're quite capable!"
Fang Chu, unusually, did not refute, only vaguely responding with "Mm." However, the smile in her eyes was impossible to hide.
Li Yunxiao leaned closer, winked, and asked in a lower voice, "Hey buddy, tell me a thing or two, how many times did it last night?"
"Mind your own business!" Fang Chu was a little embarrassed, her ears turned slightly red, and she glared at him irritably.
"Alright, alright, I don't care." Li Yunxiao waved his hand with a grin, then, as if suddenly remembering something, his expression turned serious, and he reminded her, "But you'd better be careful, don't cause a death. She just had a miscarriage, and her body is still weak."
Fang Chu's smile froze instantly, her heart skipped a beat: "No way... just last night..."
"That's hard to say!" Li Yunxiao interrupted him, his tone serious like a doctor's. "Nothing's ever 100% certain like this. What if?"
Fang Chu's heart sank, and his face changed: "She just had a miscarriage... If she gets pregnant again... Can her body handle it?" He recalled Zhi Xia's pale and weak appearance before, and a chill crept up his spine.
"It's definitely bad for her health!" Li Yunxiao said decisively. "The uterus needs time to recover. Getting pregnant again in such a short period of time is too much of a burden and can easily cause problems. The mother's body will also suffer."
These words struck Fang Chuxin like a heavy hammer. Only then did he realize how serious the consequences might have been caused by his impulses and desires last night.
Overwhelmed by immense regret and panic, he wished he could turn back time and go back to strangle his reckless self.
How could he not resist?
