Marriage in the 1970s: The Political Commissar's Contract Wife
Chapter 14 Miscarriage 1
Wang Chun carried the unconscious Zhi Xia, whose lower body was still bleeding, and staggered forward. He hadn't gone far when he encountered Aunt Wang and several other family members chatting by the roadside.
"Xiaochun! What happened? What happened to Zhixia?" Several aunties immediately surrounded her when they saw the bloodstains on Wang Chun's back and her pale face. They were all shocked.
"She...she's bleeding so much! We can't wake her up!" Wang Chun said, her voice trembling with sobs, almost collapsing from exhaustion.
Aunt Wang was very experienced. When she saw Zhixia's bloodless face and the large dark red stains on her pants, her heart skipped a beat. This amount of blood was definitely not normal.
"Oh dear! Why is this child bleeding so much! Quick! Help!" She immediately called to the other aunties, and they all helped out, carefully carrying Zhixia and hurrying towards the infirmary.
Wang Chun, standing beside her, watched Zhi Xia's limp state, and fear gripped her heart. Her voice trembled as she asked, "Aunt Wang... she... she won't die, will she?"
"What nonsense are you talking about!" Aunt Zhang immediately scolded her, trying to calm the atmosphere. "Women have those days every month, and she's still doing just fine! Maybe it just comes a little too suddenly!"
But the worry in her eyes was unmistakable; Zhixia's condition was clearly not a normal period.
The group rushed into the infirmary in a panic.
Li Yunxiao was preparing to pack up the equipment when he saw this scene and was stunned, especially when he saw Zhixia being carried in, unconscious, and the shocking large bloodstains on her pants.
As a doctor, his first reaction was to assess the most critical possibility, and he almost blurted out:
"What happened? She... she didn't miscarry, did she?!"
"What nonsense are you spouting!" Aunt Wang immediately became agitated, her voice rising sharply as she interrupted him sharply, "Li Yunxiao, can't you watch your mouth?! Zhixia is still a young woman! Don't you care about your reputation?!"
Li Yunxiao was startled by the shout and realized he had misspoke, but the situation was urgent. Pointing to Zhixia's condition, he anxiously explained, "Auntie! That's not what I meant! But with her symptoms, such heavy bleeding, and unconsciousness, this is the most dangerous thing I can think of! I... I don't know how to treat gynecology, this could be fatal if we misdiagnose her!"
Aunt Wang, being an experienced woman, immediately suppressed her anger and made the calmest and most correct decision: "Then what are you waiting for?! Immediately request a jeep and take her to the military hospital right away! Hurry!"
"I'm off right now!" Li Yunxiao knew the weight of his responsibility and dared not delay any longer. He turned and rushed to the phone, his voice trembling, "Hello! Is this the convoy? Emergency! Send a vehicle to the infirmary immediately! Quickly! To the military hospital!"
The infirmary was in chaos. Wang Chun held Zhi Xia's cold hand tightly, and tears finally fell.
The speculation that Zhixia might have miscarried was like a pebble thrown into calm water; although it was promptly rebuked, the ripples it created had already spread uncontrollably.
Like an enraged lion, Zhilin ran all the way from the training field to the infirmary upon hearing the news of his sister's accident.
His face was ashen. Without saying a word, he carefully picked up the unconscious and pale-faced Zhi Xia, as if she were a fragile treasure, and quickly climbed into the already started jeep.
Wang Chun also climbed into the car while crying. The car sped off towards the military hospital with a piercing roar.
They had only walked for less than two minutes when Fang Chu arrived at the infirmary door, panting heavily. He had clearly run there; his forehead was covered in sweat, and his face showed undisguised anxiety.
"Li Yunxiao! Where's Zhixia?" He grabbed his childhood friend who was cleaning up the mess, his voice urgent.
"They just left. They were taken to the military hospital." Li Yunxiao said without looking up, his tone heavy.
"What happened to her?" Fang Chu asked anxiously.
Li Yunxiao paused, looked up, and glanced around warily. Then he pulled Fang Chu to the innermost corner of the infirmary, lowered his voice, and said with unprecedented seriousness, "I'm telling you, but you absolutely mustn't tell anyone! This is a huge deal... I suspect she... she might have miscarried."
"What?!" Fang Chu was struck dumb, grabbing Li Yunxiao's arm with such force that she almost crushed his bones. Her eyes were filled with disbelief and a shock that shattered her understanding of the world. "What nonsense are you talking about?!"
"I'm not lying!" Li Yunxiao shook off his hand, her tone urgent and certain, pointing to the examination bed where Zhixia had been placed, where traces of blood could still be seen. "Look at that amount of blood! In all my years as a doctor, has any normal menstrual flow ever caused that much bleeding? Could it make someone faint? Absolutely not! That's the amount of blood from a miscarriage!"
Fang Chu's mind went blank with a "buzz," and she subconsciously muttered a rebuttal: "Impossible... She told me herself that she was taking birth control pills..."
These words were like a bomb dropped into a silent room.
Li Yunxiao's eyes widened instantly, and he blurted out in shock, his voice cracking, "...The child is yours?!"
This was not a question, but a confirmation tinged with immense shock.
He instantly connected all the clues—Fang Chu's previous serious injury, Zhi Lin's unusual anger, and Fang Chu's current distraught and involuntary reaction...
The air seemed to freeze at that moment.
Two men stood in the infirmary, filled with the smell of disinfectant and a faint stench of blood. One was terrified, the other pale-faced. A shocking secret was laid bare and exposed to those in the know in these few hurried and suppressed words.
Fang Chu didn't say anything more. He simply turned around abruptly and charged out of the infirmary like a raging beast. He jumped onto his bicycle and pedaled furiously towards the military hospital. At that moment, only one thought occupied his mind: he had to get to her side immediately!
In the corridor of the military hospital, Zhilin carried his light, unconscious younger sister all the way to the emergency room, his voice trembling: "Doctor! Doctor! Please look at my sister! What's wrong with her?"
The doctor who treated Zhixia felt a pang of sadness upon seeing her pale face and the large bloodstains on her pants, and immediately asked, "What happened?"
"I had my period, and suddenly this happened. I bled a lot, and then I passed out!" Zhilin explained hurriedly.
"Menstruation?" The doctor, with his extensive experience, felt that this symptom was definitely unusual. "Quick! Get her to the emergency room immediately and call the obstetrician-gynecologist for a consultation!" The nurses immediately sprang into action, pushing a mobile hospital bed and quickly sending Zhixia to the emergency room.
