Chapter 8 The Last Severely Damaged Hut
After leaving the train, Su Yuan once again plunged into this primeval and vibrant forest.
With his previous experience, he was much more adept at this operation.
Having lived in the city for over twenty years, Su Yuan had never felt nature so clearly as he did now.
Following the directions on the map, Su Yuan headed west.
After another rapid trek of less than ten minutes, the second ranger's hut came into view.
Similar in style to the first cottage, it was also a log cabin, sitting alone on a flat area halfway up the mountain.
However, this little house seems to be in better condition than the first one; at least the doors and windows are still intact, and there isn't as much moss on the roof.
Su Yuan nimbly jumped down from the tree and landed on the open ground in front of the hut without making a sound.
He didn't rush in, but instead walked around the house first, while simultaneously pushing his perception to its limit.
The room was quiet, with no signs of life.
Only after confirming that it was safe did he walk to the front of the cabin.
A large brass lock also hung on the door, which was rusted beyond recognition in the humid air.
"This kind of lock again?" Su Yuan pursed his lips.
Faced with this level of defense, he didn't even bother to lift his feet.
He extended his right index and middle fingers, brought them together, and gently poked at the rusty lock cylinder.
"Pfft!"
With a soft sound, Su Yuan withdrew his finger and gently pushed the wooden door, which creaked open inwards.
A smell, similar to the one before, mixed with dust and mildew, wafted towards me.
Su Yuan stepped inside and quickly surveyed the room.
The layout here is very similar to the first small room, with the same combination of bed, table and chairs, and filing cabinet.
It appears that these ranger rescue stations were all built to the same specifications.
Having learned from his first experience of looting, Su Yuan acted much faster this time.
He got straight to the point, first opening the unlocked wardrobe.
There were also several forest ranger uniforms hanging inside. Su Yuan was too lazy to choose, so he just packed them all up and prepared to take them all with him.
Even a small mosquito is still meat. These clothes will be useful resources, whether we wear them ourselves or trade them.
Then he walked over to the locked filing cabinets.
Using the same trick again, he easily pried open the lock cylinder with his fingers and then began searching through them one by one.
The first two cabinets were still filled with useless documents and forms, which Su Yuan didn't even bother to look at and simply skipped over.
When he opened the third cabinet, his eyes lit up.
There were no treasure chests inside, but there were two brand new fire axes!
The axe handle was a bright red, and the blade gleamed with a chilling light; it was clearly a valuable item.
"Holy crap, this is good!" Su Yuan picked up an axe, weighed it in his hand, and found it to be quite heavy.
He waved it, making a powerful and dynamic sound.
Compared to a machete, an axe is undoubtedly a level above in terms of chopping power.
This thing is much better than a woodcutter's axe, whether it's used for cutting down trees, breaking down doors, or even as a weapon.
"Not bad, not bad, two more tough items." Su Yuan put the two fire axes into the wooden treasure chest with satisfaction.
He had already taken this thing out as a temporary backpack, and the two fire axes were the same type, taking up only one slot, while a slot could only hold a maximum of nine axes.
After searching the filing cabinet, Su Yuan set his sights on the bed.
He carefully searched the bedding on the bed, checking under the pillows, leaving no possible corner unchecked.
Unfortunately, no diary or small items like cigarettes or matches were found this time.
Finally, his gaze fell on the underside of the bed.
As before, there was a military green metal box under the bed.
Su Yuan's heart skipped a beat, and he immediately dragged the box out.
The box was also locked.
"Clatter".
The lock was easily broken, and Su Yuan, with a hint of anticipation, lifted the lid of the box.
The box contained some personal clothing and other odds and ends, such as an old book and an empty enamel mug.
Undeterred, Su Yuan reached inside and took everything out, then carefully examined the bottom of the box.
He tapped and pressed every inch of the sheet metal at the bottom of the box with his fingers.
"Knock knock... knock knock..."
The sound was deep and solid.
There is no interlayer.
"Sigh, it seems not every box has an Easter egg." Su Yuan was a little disappointed.
He had hoped to find another treasure chest.
But then I thought again, I shouldn't be too greedy.
Finding two fire axes for free is already a pleasant surprise.
He thoroughly inspected the entire house again, not even missing the gaps in the ceiling and floor.
After confirming that there was nothing of value left, Su Yuan picked up the packed clothes, took the enamel cup, and left the ranger's hut.
Next stop, the valley to the east!
Su Yuan unfolded the map again, confirmed the direction, and then his figure disappeared into the mountains and forests like a ghost.
This time, he headed directly east.
According to the diary entries, something unusual seemed to have happened there.
Su Yuan made plans in his mind as he traveled.
"The forest ranger who wrote in his diary mentioned that the wild boar, weighing over 300 pounds, had wounds that didn't look like they were inflicted by tigers or leopards, but rather looked like it had been attacked by a group of something..."
"A group... what could it be?"
He couldn't help but recall the hasty and desperate handwriting on the last page of the diary.
Black...it's all black...they're coming...from the fog...
"fog……"
Su Yuan's eyes narrowed as he thought of the endless black fog that followed all the trains.
The disappearance of the forest rangers and the strange events that have occurred in this forest are all related to the black fog.
While he was pondering, Su Yuan had already arrived at the eastern area marked on the map.
Before he could even find the ranger's cabin, a strong smell of decay and ruin wafted over on the wind.
Su Yuan stopped and stood on the canopy of a large tree, looking towards the valley.
Deep in the valley, all that could be seen was a scene of devastation.
Countless trees were snapped in half, the ground was riddled with holes, and there were huge claw marks and churned soil everywhere.
In the center of those ruins, the remains of a building are still faintly discernible.
That should be the third ranger's cabin.
However, at this moment, that little house can no longer be called a "house".
The entire roof had completely collapsed, and half of the wall had fallen down, leaving only a few charred wooden beams, crookedly stuck in the ruins, looking like a skeleton that had been gnawed beyond recognition.
"Holy crap, was this place bombed?"
Seeing the horrific scene before him, Su Yuan couldn't help but gasp.
The extent of the damage was far more exaggerated than him kicking the door open.
What on earth could cause such horrific destruction?
For the first time, a sense of seriousness rose in Su Yuan's heart.
