Hogwarts' Golden Glory
Chapter 276 The Werewolf's Choice
An old werewolf raised his hand tremblingly: "Young...sir, you're right, but how can we do it? The Ministry of Magic won't allow werewolves to form communities, wizards are afraid of us, and Muggles see us as monsters. We can't even find decent jobs. Most of our brothers live like beggars, stealing and robbing, or...being locked up during the full moon, praying not to hurt anyone."
His words resonated with many. Kane saw many people lower their heads, their eyes filled with deep humiliation and despair.
This is the true state of being for werewolves—not the "proud warriors" that Greyback touts, but marginalized individuals abandoned by society, struggling to survive amidst poverty, discrimination, and curses.
"So we need to change," Kane said, "but not the Greyback way, and not the Voldemort way."
He turned to Lupin: "Remus, you said you have a network of contacts among the werewolves and know the distribution of other werewolf groups, right?"
Lupin nodded: "Yes. Besides organized tribes like the Greyback, there are three other types of werewolves: one type, like us, hides in wizarding society, has a job, a family, and locks themselves away every month; the second type lives at the very bottom of Muggle society, like a vagrant; the third type... completely degenerates and becomes a henchman or assassin for dark wizards."
"So," Kane looked at everyone, "from today onwards, this camp will no longer be just a hideout for werewolves, but a... transit point and sanctuary. All werewolves willing to abide by the rules can come here to obtain potions, learn control, and find safe places to live and work."
Tobias couldn't help but ask, "But that would reveal our location! What if the Ministry of Magic finds out—"
"We won't be detected." Kane took a roll of parchment from his bag, unfolded it, and revealed a detailed map of an area in the northern Scottish Highlands. "Because we're moving. To here—the 'Misty Valley,' thirty miles north of the Loch Morag region. There are natural terrain barriers there, shrouded in magical mist year-round, making it difficult for ordinary wizards to enter. More importantly, it's the sacred site of ancient druids, protected by residual natural magic that can conceal the scent of werewolves."
Moody walked over, glanced at the map, and raised an eyebrow: "You know that place? It's designated as a 'high-risk, unknown area' by the Ministry of Magic. Even Aurors are hesitant to venture deep into it."
"That's why it's safe," Kane said. "And while I was studying ancient magic, I discovered that the magical environment of Misty Valley has a special calming effect on werewolves—during a full moon, the mist there can absorb some of the magical impact of the moonlight, reducing the pain of transformation."
A surprised whisper arose among the werewolves. If this were true, then Misty Valley would be a werewolf paradise.
"But how will we get across?" Ella asked. "There are so many of us, including the elderly and the infirm—"
“Igor can help.” Kane looked at the phoenix on his shoulder. Although exhausted, Igor opened his eyes and nodded gently. “While the phoenix’s short-range teleportation can’t take everyone at once, it can be done in batches. And Mr. Moody knows some hidden routes that can evade the Ministry of Magic’s monitoring.”
"And I promise! From now on, I will allow the werewolf race to appear openly and legitimately among wizards!"
Lupin took a deep breath and looked at Kane: "Your plan is very detailed. But this plan... requires a lot of resources. Potion ingredients, construction materials, food, protective magic materials... this requires a lot of money and a secure supply chain."
Kane remained silent for a moment. The morning light fully illuminated his face, and there was no wavering in his gray eyes.
"I'll take care of the funding and distribution channels," he said. "You just need to decide—whether you're willing to try a new path."
The silence lasted for a long time.
The first to raise his hand was Tobias: "I'm willing! I'm fed up with living in hiding!"
Then it was Ella's turn: "I want to too! I want... I want to get married and have children so I won't have to be afraid of hurting them during the full moon."
Then came the old werewolf, who wiped away tears from the corners of his eyes: "At my age, I thought I'd die in some dirty alley... but now, I want to give it a try."
One by one, more and more people raised their hands. Finally, even Crackclaw, lying on the ground, and the other die-hard Greybacks struggled to raise their hands.
They may not fully trust Kane, but they have no other choice.
Sometimes, a desperate person will grasp at just a straw and never let go.
Kane gave them more than one straw.
He gave them a bridge.
The next three days were a period of intense reconstruction and relocation.
Kane, Moody, and Lupin split up and acted separately:
Moody was in charge of clearing the camp, erasing all traces of magic, and setting up misleading clues to make potential pursuers believe that the werewolf tribe had scattered and fled due to internal strife. He also contacted his trusted old colleague in the Auror office, Kingsley Shackle, and transmitted some intelligence through encrypted channels (concealing Kane's key role) to ensure that the Ministry of Magic would not conduct a large-scale manhunt in the short term.
Lupin was in charge of organizing the werewolves.
He grouped people according to their abilities: those with combat skills were responsible for guarding and carrying supplies; those with healing or manual skills were responsible for caring for the wounded and organizing supplies; and the young and strong began to learn basic discipline and cooperation—not military training, but how to live in a group, how to control emotions, and how to establish order without the oppression of the Alpha Werewolves.
Tobias, Ella, and three other outstanding werewolves formed a temporary "management team," learning decision-making and conflict mediation under Lupin's guidance. This process was difficult—the werewolves were used to obedience or resistance, not equal discussion. But Lupin's patience and Kane's occasional guidance allowed things to slowly progress.
Kane himself is doing three things.
The first thing to do is deal with Graybury.
The out-of-control Alpha werewolf was bound in a specially made magical cage—a makeshift one by Kane using silverware and ancient runes from the camp's warehouse. Greyback oscillated between lucidity and madness; when lucid, he would curse, and when mad, he would attack indiscriminately. Kane injected him with a powerful sedative daily, while also drawing blood and hair samples.
"You want to study him?" On the evening of the third day, Lupin found Kane busy in the makeshift laboratory and asked with a frown, "This is dangerous. And... some people don't understand; they think we should just kill Greyback to avenge those he killed."
Kane put down the microscope in his hand—an alchemical artifact he had brought from Hogwarts, used to observe the flow of magic. "Hatred is easy, Remus. But we need to understand what Voldemort did to prevent him from succeeding again."
