Hogwarts' Golden Glory
Chapter 262 Lupine
Kane took the notebook. The cover was worn, the pages were curled, and it was filled with dense writing, hand-drawn maps, and charts. He quickly flipped through it:
Camp size: Approximately eighty adult werewolves, plus women and children, totaling one hundred and twenty people.
Guards: Four shifts in rotation, six people per shift, double the number during the full moon.
Greyback: He lives alone in the largest cabin in the center of the camp, and patrols the area precisely at midnight every night.
The man in black (codename "Viper"): Rarely seen; food is personally delivered by Greyback; the cabin is surrounded by powerful protective spells.
"What type of protective charm?" Kane asked.
"A combination. Anti-intrusion, anti-spying, powerful early warning, and..." Moody hesitated for a moment, "...some kind of blood magic I've never seen before. I tried it once with a detection spell from a hundred yards away, and the spell bounced back, almost killing me."
Kane closed his notebook, lost in thought. "Blood magic... This means Voldemort might not just be 'residing' there; he might be performing some kind of ritual with werewolf blood. It could be restoring power, or it could be creating something."
"for example?"
"For example, an army of werewolves that can transform at any time, unbound by the moon, and completely at his command," Kane said. "If successful, that would be more terrifying than any Dementors or giants. Just imagine—eighty werewolves who can transform anytime, anywhere, suddenly appearing in Hogsmeade, or Diagon Alley, or even Hogwarts..."
Moody's face turned extremely grim. "We must stop him."
“Yes,” Kane said, “but we must stop it smartly. A direct assault won’t work; the camp is easy to defend and difficult to attack, and once the war starts, the werewolves will instinctively band together around Greyback—even if they hate him, when faced with an enemy, blood ties will prevail.”
"so?"
"So we need to dismantle them from within." Kane looked at Moody. "The key is an improved wolfsbane potion. If we can prove there's a way for werewolves to remain sane during the full moon, unaffected by pain or the curse... how many do you think would remain loyal to Greyback and that man in black?"
Moody thought for a moment. "Most of them. But not all. Graybury has a group of die-hards, those lunatics who enjoy killing and violence. They'll oppose any change."
"Then get rid of them," Kane said calmly. "While demonstrating the potion's effects, eliminate obstacles with minimal cost. Let the other werewolves see that following us offers a future, while following Greyback only leads to death."
Moody stared at him, rain streaming down his face. "You're talking about a coup. In a werewolf tribe, led by a twelve-year-old wizard."
“Actual age doesn’t matter,” Kane said. “What matters is what I can offer. And what I can offer them most is dignity and the possibility of controlling their own destiny.”
Igor let out a soft cry, spread its wings, and shook off the rain. The phoenix's movements were elegant and composed, as if it were preparing for its next move.
Moody glanced at Phoenix, then at Kane. Finally, he sighed—his voice tinged with weariness, but more so with resolve. "Alright, kid. I'll play this big game with you. But remember—if things go wrong, Lupin will be my priority. He's my friend's son, and I can't let him die here."
"Understood." Kane nodded. "Then, our first step is to contact Lupin, without exposing him."
The two exchanged a glance, and finally their gazes both fell on Tobias!
"Me?" Tobias pointed to himself.
......
Tobias limped back to camp.
The rain had stopped, but the muddy ground made every step incredibly difficult for him. Every movement of his shoulder wound sent a tearing pain through him, but the pills Kane had given him were indeed working—the frantic restlessness that had driven him to want to tear everything apart and devour everything had subsided, replaced by a long-lost clarity.
He can even think now.
This in itself is a miracle.
The camp is located in a valley on the western shore of Lake Molag, partially surrounded by towering cliffs and dense pine forests, making it easy to defend and difficult to attack.
The outer perimeter was surrounded by a rough wooden fence with sharpened tops, and in some places hung bones and hides to warn intruders—some from animals, others not.
Tobias slipped through a hidden gap on the east side. The gap was small, concealed by a thicket of blackberries, and only the old guards of the camp knew of it. The watchman was indeed not there—it should have been "Greymane's" turn at this time, and that unusual werewolf often "overlooked" things.
He had just crawled through the gap when a voice came from the shadows: "Where have you been?"
Tobias froze. He slowly turned and saw a tall, thin figure leaning against the shadows of the fence. The man had three parallel scars on his face, running from the corner of his left eye to his chin, looking particularly menacing in the moonlight. But his eyes were a gentle brown, unlike the cloudy ones of other werewolves.
Mr. Greymane. Or rather, Remus Lupin.
"Hunting..." Tobias said softly, trying to make his voice sound normal, "We came across an injured elk and chased it a little too far."
Lupin took a few steps closer, his nose twitching slightly. A werewolf's sense of smell far surpasses that of a normal person, especially during the sensitive period before and after transformation. "You smell of a strange wizard. And blood—fresh blood, but not animal blood."
Tobias's heart pounded. He could feel cold sweat trickling down his back.
What should I do?
说实话?
But is Graymane really believable?
What if the little wizard guesses wrong?
He's not finished, is he?
There were rumors in the camp that he was different from the others, but some people said he was a mole planted by Greyback to expose "disloyal" people.
Just as he hesitated, Lupin suddenly lowered his voice: "Tobias, I need you to answer me honestly. Did you encounter a young wizard, blond with gray eyes, about this tall—" He gestured a height, "and with a strange bird beside him?"
Tobias's eyes widened.
Lupin's expression grew even more serious: "If so, then you must tell me everything. Because that person... could be a matter of life and death for all of us."
These words broke down Tobias's last line of defense. He nodded, his voice trembling, "Yes...yes. He gave me medicine and cured my restlessness. He also said...that he would come on the night of the full moon and help us."
Lupin took a deep breath, looked around to make sure no one was near. Then he grabbed Tobias's arm—a light but firm touch—and pulled him into a nearby abandoned storage hut.
