Chapter 191 Investigating the Post Station, Provoking Conflict
He stepped out and headed south of the city.
The South City Post Station. Murong Fu stayed there.
He walked slowly and steadily, blending into the crowd unnoticed.
The sunlight shone down from above, casting the shadow of his low-brimmed straw hat onto the stone pavement.
He walked slowly, crossing one street after another.
The outline of the South City Post Station was already faintly visible at the other end of the street.
He pulled down the brim of his hat and continued walking.
The courtyard wall of Chengnan Post Station was lower than Wu Feng had expected.
The earthen-yellow rammed earth wall was no more than ten feet high, with a few faded flagpoles and lanterns with the character "驿" (post station) hanging on top.
The lanterns hadn't been lit yet and hung limply.
There were no sentries at the entrance of the rest station.
Several players dressed in Murong family uniforms squatted by the stone steps, with grass stalks in their mouths, looking around listlessly.
One of them looked up at Wu Feng, a centurion of the First-Class Hall, wearing leather armor, a sword at his waist, and a straw hat pulled low. His gaze lingered for a moment before turning back.
Wu Feng didn't stop walking as he passed the main entrance of the post station, glancing inside out of the corner of his eye.
The courtyard was more lively than the outside.
Thirty or forty people were sitting or standing in the courtyard paved with gray bricks. Most of them were players, and a few were dressed as NPC servants.
Some people were wiping their weapons, some were talking in hushed tones, and a few were gathered under a crooked locust tree, pointing at a map.
He didn't see Murong Fu. Nor did he see Bao Butong and those other familiar faces.
This is not surprising. Murong Fu is, after all, a young master; he wouldn't just sit in the courtyard waiting for a mission.
Wu Feng withdrew his gaze and continued walking forward.
After passing through the gate of the post station, turn into a side alley.
The alley wasn't deep; at the end was the back wall of the post station, which was two feet lower than the front wall, with several broken baskets piled at its base.
He leaned into the shadows of the corner of the wall. From there, he could see what was happening in the backyard of the inn.
The backyard was quieter than the front yard. Several gray-tiled bungalows stood with their doors and windows tightly shut, and two guards with swords stood under the eaves.
It is an NPC from the Murong family, marked with the words "Murong Family Guard - Elite" above its head, level 38.
Wu Feng squinted and memorized the location.
I stood in the shadows in the corner for fifteen minutes.
The sunlight moved from overhead to the west, lengthening the shadows in the courtyard.
A commotion arose in the front yard, and someone could be heard shouting, "The young master is out."
After another incense stick's time, he straightened up.
Following the route he had come by, he crossed two streets and turned into a shop with a cloth sign that read "wine".
The shop wasn't big, with four or five wooden tables. There wasn't much business in the afternoon, except for a dozing shopkeeper slumped over the counter.
He sat down by the window. He ordered a pot of cloudy wine and a plate of braised tofu.
He chewed slowly, his gaze passing over the window and landing on the gate of the post station diagonally opposite.
The players at the entrance were still there. He swallowed a mouthful of dried bean curd and put down his wine bowl.
Wu Feng sat by the window in the wine shop, with a half-empty pot of turbid wine on the table and a plate of braised tofu that was almost gone.
He held the wine bowl but didn't drink it, his gaze falling through the window onto the gate of the post station diagonally opposite.
The Murong family players at the entrance were still there, though a new batch had come, and they were still squatting idly by the stone steps.
The sun had already dipped halfway down the west, casting even longer shadows in the courtyard.
Then there was a commotion inside the post station. Murong Fu came out from inside the door.
Dressed in white, with a long sword at his waist and a folding fan in his hand, he moved with composure.
Following half a step behind him was Bao Butong, followed by Feng Bo'e, and several NPC guards from the Murong family.
Finally, a string of players followed, roughly a dozen or so.
Some of the players carried knives, others swords, and they were dressed in all sorts of clothes. They followed closely behind Murong Fu, their eyes constantly scanning their surroundings, looking just like bodyguards.
Wu Feng was speechless.
This Murong Fu is much smarter than the one in the book. At least he knows how to recruit soldiers, although the ones he recruited... He glanced at the group of players.
Their levels varied, their equipment was a mixed bag, and their auras were weak; none of them were worth looking at.
They're all third-rate. No wonder they're willing to follow NPCs; those with higher strength probably wouldn't even consider being someone's lackey.
He stuffed the last piece of braised tofu into his mouth, put down the wine bowl, and took out a few copper coins from his sleeve, slapping them on the table.
He got up, pulled his straw hat brim down, and went out the door.
Murong Fu and his party had reached the other end of the street and were turning south of the city.
Wu Feng followed at a leisurely pace, keeping a distance of twenty or thirty steps, his steps as casual as a passerby strolling by.
He watched the backs of the group of people ahead.
Murong Fu walked at the front, his white clothes eye-catching, his steps unhurried, and he certainly had the air of a young master from a noble family.
Bao Butong followed behind him, his head swaying slightly, as if he were saying something.
Feng Bo'e walked on the other side, his eyes warily glancing back every now and then.
The group of players behind them weren't so particular.
They huddled together in twos and threes, some whispering to each other, others looking around, the group scattered and disorganized.
Wu Feng stared at Murong Fu's back, his mind racing.
If I kill Murong Fu now, will he reappear?
He remembered that Yun Zhonghe had been killed some time ago, and he hadn't heard of another Yun Zhonghe appearing somewhere.
What is the NPC kill mechanism in this game? Are they completely gone, or do they refresh after a period of time? Or do they require specific conditions?
He pondered, his gaze sweeping back and forth over Murong Fu.
How good is this person's martial arts? In the original story, he can't compare to Xiao Feng, and he's also far inferior to people like Kumārajīva and Duan Yanqing.
Are they considered peak second-rate or just entering first-rate? Bao Butong, Feng Bo'e, and those other retainers are probably at the mid-second-rate level.
The group of players behind them were barely third-rate. With that kind of lineup, it would be relatively easy for him to take Murong Fu's head if he wanted to.
However, committing violence in public would be detrimental to future development in Western Xia and would also damage one's reputation in the martial arts world.
Furthermore, the distance and street environment were estimated. There were quite a few people on the street, including vendors, passersby, and the occasional patrol team.
This place isn't far from Yipintang. If we make a commotion, someone from Helian Tieshu's side will come over soon.
Just then, a group of people appeared from the street corner ahead.
Wu Feng looked up and paused for a moment.
Helian Tieshu. His signature iron-blue face, riding a horse, followed by a dark mass of men.
Leading the way were several NPC leaders, followed by the patrol team of the 20th and 30th Yipintang members, and then some players wearing standard leather armor mixed in.
The large group of people turned the corner and ran right into Murong Fu's party.
Wu Feng slowed his pace, his gaze sweeping back and forth between Helian Tieshu and Murong Fu.
Then a slight smirk appeared on his lips. This is interesting.
Without hesitation, he quickened his pace, bypassed Murong Fu's group, and headed directly towards Helian Tieshu's cavalry from the side.
Helian Tieshu, riding on his horse, saw a man in a centurion's leather armor walking straight toward him from afar.
He frowned slightly and pulled on the reins.
Wu Feng walked to the front of the horse, placed his right hand on his chest in a salute, and raised his head, revealing half of his face under the brim of his straw hat.
"General, I have something to report."
Helian Tieshu glanced down at him. The centurion's iron badge dangled at his waist, and the leather armor was standard but unfamiliar. However, there were many people in the First Rank Hall, and he couldn't possibly recognize everyone.
"Speak," Helian Tieshu replied in a hoarse voice.
Wu Feng stepped forward two paces closer to the horse and lowered his voice: "General, I spotted that group of people over there during my patrol today."
He gestured with his chin toward Murong Fu's group, "It's related to those thieves who broke into the palace last night."
Helian Tieshu's eyes narrowed. He stared at Wu Feng for a couple of moments, then turned to look at Murong Fu and the others who were walking forward at the other end of the street.
Clad in white with a folding fan, followed by guards and a motley crew of martial arts practitioners, this attire and entourage certainly didn't resemble that of an ordinary merchant.
"Are you sure?" Helian Tieshu asked in a deep voice.
"I personally saw that group of people loitering around the palace, acting suspiciously," Wu Feng said without changing his expression. "Last night, when the thief broke into the palace, they might have been their helpers. They're still wandering around the city now, probably scouting the area."
Helian Tieshu remained silent, his gaze lingering on Murong Fu and his group for a moment.
Then he raised his hand. "Stop."
The twenty or thirty men behind them all stopped in their tracks.
