"Master isn't the kind of person who betrays trust like you say. She would never abandon me, right, Master?" Lu Wenli fawned over Chang Xi.

"Who said that?" Chang Xi fiddled with his phone screen, calm and collected. "It's better to die than to die, my friend. You've worked hard. I'll burn paper money for you on this day next year."

"Um?!"

[Wait a minute, she's not playing by the rules.]

Logically, shouldn't she have declared with righteous indignation that she wouldn't give up on Lu Wenli?

Oh no, they're not really going to throw my little deer to these bastards, are they?

She dared to throw our little deer out; the deer won't let her get away with it. They could drown her with their spit.

"Fine, I'll trade him for that child." Chang Xi pushed the man forward.

Lu Wenli refused to step forward, saying, "No, no! Chang Xi, you've gone too far! I curse your ancestors for eighteen generations!"

"I don't even know who my ancestors are, so where are you going to ask them?" Chang Xi said impatiently, putting his hand on the belt behind his waist and shoving him forward.

Seeing this, the male ghost slowly released his grip on the child.

Both sides were somewhat wary.

Lu Wenli took two shaky steps forward, brushed past him, and suddenly fell forward.

The three demons joined forces, intending to tear Lu Wenli's physical body apart in an instant.

A red rope tied with a copper coin jingled, and Lu Wenli instantly took flight, flying backward before staggering and landing behind Chang Xi.

Lu Wenli was momentarily dazed. "Waaah! I knew you wouldn't abandon me!"

The child immediately ran to her side, startling the red flame on Chang Xi's shoulder, which flapped its wings and flew away.

Enraged, the male ghost shouted, "You've successfully provoked me! None of you will leave here alive!"

After saying this, Chang Xi's feet began to crack, and then they were surrounded by flames.

"Wow!" Lu Wenli, holding his phone, did a robotic dance on the spot, "Hot hot hot!"

Flames licked Chang Xi's trouser leg, but she remained dazed and indifferent, as if nothing had happened.

"Don't you feel hot?" Lu Wenli asked curiously, and pulled Chang Xi away.

A safe zone has appeared ahead.

"It's safe over there!" Lu Wenli said, and was about to pull Chang Xi to jump over, but she grabbed him and lifted him up by the back of his collar.

"What are you doing?" Lu Wenli asked, inexplicably agitated.

"Open your eyes and see clearly what's under your feet."

Chang Xi's rebuke made Lu Wenli lower his head. The once safe open space turned into a low window, and it was even open.

They didn't know when they arrived at the small attic on the third floor. Lu Wenli had almost pulled Chang Xi off the attic just now.

"Holy crap!" Lu Wenli's legs went weak when he landed. "How did I just go blind?"

"It's just the lowest form of illusion. If there really was such a big fire, you would have been burned to ashes. The feeling of being burned is just him misleading you."

This illusion felt so real.

Lu Wenli almost died a similarly gruesome death as that ghost who jumped off the building.

"Sister, I'm scared!" The child clung tightly to Chang Xi's leg.

Chang Xi looked down at the child thoughtfully, "Don't worry, I can break this illusion."

The three of them went up to the second floor. The corridor was only seven or eight meters long, but they walked for five or six minutes and still hadn't reached the end.

An endless corridor is even more terrifying.

Chang Xi formed a hand seal but said nothing.

A faint tinkling sound could be heard in the corridor.

Lu Wenli thought the voice sounded familiar, and his face lit up with joy. "It's your Five Emperor Coins! The room is this way!"

The child gripped his hand tightly and followed.

The illusions around them began to dissipate, revealing the house's true appearance.

Chang Xi is very clever. I thought the copper coins and red string he put there before were useless, but now they've come in handy.

Chang Xi stepped forward, removed the red string, and gathered it in his palm.

"That's awesome! You're so amazing, sister!" The child jumped up and down, clapping for her.

Chang Xi glanced at him sideways, "Isn't that enough? Haven't you had enough after acting for so long?"

Lu Wenli looked bewildered. "Are you talking about me?"

Of course not, you big idiot.

Is there something wrong with this kid? No way, that male ghost just tried to kill him.

"Sister, what are you saying? I don't quite understand." The child looked puzzled and reached out to Lu Wenli. "Brother, I'm scared."

Although Lu Wenli sympathized with him, he trusted Chang Xi more because of everything they had been through. He silently took a step back, "Brother is scared too, I need a hug."

He hugged his own frail and helpless self tightly.

"Look at you, at your age, your acting skills are still terrible," Chang Xi said, shaking his phone screen, which showed news about the house from back then.

"You said your mother always cooked for you, and she was still cooking for you before she died. But this lady is a senior executive at an insurance company. She's not exactly never home, but she's at least a career woman with a busy work schedule. She can manage one or two meals occasionally, but how could she cook for you every day?"

Furthermore, people wear the clothes they were wearing after death, and the female ghost just now was wearing a business suit.

"Maybe I remembered it wrong," the child said, pouting and looking aggrieved.

"It's possible that the child doesn't even remember these things," Lu Wenli said, peeking out.

Chang Xi put away his phone, speechless. "So you're a complete idiot, believing whatever he says? He said his father was an alcoholic who beat his mother. How could someone allergic to alcohol be an alcoholic?"

"How did you know?" Lu Wenli was speechless.

"Would an alcoholic not have alcohol at home? Not even cooking wine, which is essential for cooking, unless someone in the family has a severe alcohol allergy that prevents them from consuming even a tiny bit of it."

[Perhaps the later owner moved out, or maybe it's because there were two different owners.]

"A quick online search will tell you that both previous homeowners died within a week of moving in, before they could even move their own belongings in. There wasn't enough time to clear out all the things that originally belonged to the family of three, like the bedroom on the second floor."

Lu Wenli realized what was going on and glared at the child. "So you really were lying to us? Tell me! What scheme?"

"Because he is the leader of this group of ghosts. He wants to trap us here and eat us." Chang Xi exposed his true colors. "We have special destinies. By eating our souls, his cultivation can be raised by several levels, thus breaking free from the shackles of the earthbound spirits and going anywhere."

The child kept his head down and didn't say anything. When he looked up again, the innocence on his face had vanished, replaced by a decaying, cold feeling that was completely out of character for his age.

"So what if I know? Can you kill me?" The child flipped over and jumped off the second floor, unharmed, but floating in mid-air. "I was thinking of playing with you guys, but looks like I won't. Come out!"

Four ghosts crawled out from various corners. They originally had some self-awareness, but now they were completely like puppets being manipulated.

Chang Xi casually handed Lu Wenli two crumpled yellow talismans.

The red rope wrapped around his wrist was flung out, instantly splitting into four strands that firmly bound the four ghosts.

The copper coin gleamed faintly, and the more the ghost struggled, the tighter the coin tightened its grip.

Finally, the pain caused them to growl in their throats.

Chang Xi can control ghosts with one hand and still has the energy to deal with child ghosts. "They don't have any karmic burdens, so I can't kill them. But you might be a different story. If your true form is destroyed, how long do you think you can live?"

The child ghost sneered, "Do you even know where my true form is? By the time you find it, I'll have already killed you."

"Isn't this it?"
