Chapter 16 Moon Moth
The silky ribbon on the gift box was loosened, and the moment the box was opened, a ball of silvery-white light emerged from within—it was a moth the size of a palm.
The little guy's wings were covered with moonlight-like phosphorescent powder. It circled in the air a few times, illuminating a corner of the dormitory.
It seemed to be attracted by some scent, and finally stopped on Draco's fingertip, its wings fluttering slightly, and it dropped a shower of silver light.
"This is..." Draco froze, not daring to move his fingertips for fear of disturbing the fleeting light.
"Moon moth." Elias's voice rang in my ears, tinged with amusement. "A species deep in the Norwegian Black Forest, it only comes out on the night of the full moon."
Elias raised his hand, gesturing for Moonmoth to come over.
Moon Moth: ψ(`∇´)ψ! ! !
The Moon Moth recognized the two-legged creature that had captured it, and immediately pounced on it menacingly, its wings slapping against Elias's hand with a "slap slap" sound.
"And it's very smart. It can find its way by following its owner's heartbeat, so there's no need to worry about it getting lost," Elias calmly withdrew his hand, completely unconcerned about the little moth's revenge.
Draco's eyes gleamed as he watched the moth flutter away, satisfied, after slapping Elias's hand until it was red.
"It..." Draco began eagerly, but his throat was dry with excitement. He cleared his throat and asked, "What does it eat?"
The dormitory lights were off, so there was very little light.
Elias looked down at Draco's wide, excited eyes, which were bright and round.
"Elijas???" Draco asked, looking at the boy in front of him who was clearly distracted.
Elias snapped out of his reverie. "The moon moth mainly feeds on morning dew and mistletoe berries. In addition, you can feed it a little bit of other plant fruits."
After the silver-haired boy finished speaking, as if afraid that Draco might have some reservations, he added, "Moon moths are very quiet, not as noisy as owls, so you don't have to worry about Filch finding out if you keep them in the dorm."
Draco... was a little pleased. He remembered that he had casually complained last week about Elo (his owl) always flapping around in the middle of the night, and he didn't expect Elias to have taken it to heart.
The moon moth landed silently on Draco's head, its wings flapping and bringing a very slight tickling sensation.
Draco froze, his neck stiff as he looked at Elias, his eyes filled with a plea for help that even he himself didn't realize.
"His neck is so straight, it's a bit like the little zombie from Chinese legends," Elias thought to himself.
In order to help young Malfoy escape his misery, Elias had no choice but to resort to his old tricks and reach out to Moonmoth again. The vengeful little guy immediately abandoned Draco and pounced on her.
"Norway...when did you go there?" Draco suddenly remembered this question. He was with Elias every day and had never seen him leave Hogwarts.
The Black Forest is in Northern Europe, thousands of miles away from Hogwarts. Even using Apparition, it would take a considerable amount of time to travel there and back.
Elias didn't answer directly, but instead gently touched the moon moth's wing with his fingertip. The wing was soft and felt nice to the touch. (Although it was swatted away the next second.)
"I took care of some family matters last week, and it was on my way there in the evening," he said casually, as if he wasn't the one who went to the Black Forest in the middle of the night to capture rare magical creatures.
But Draco noticed a dark brown stain on the side of his wrist—it was strangler vine sap, mentioned in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a specialty of the Black Forest, which wouldn't fade from the skin for three days.
"So stupid," Draco muttered under his breath.
Suddenly remembering something, the blond boy pulled out a finely crafted handkerchief from his pocket, with gold embroidery along the edges.
Draco: This is a special supply for Malfoy!!!
Draco grabbed Elias's wrist, pinched the handkerchief between his fingertips, and rubbed the stain hard. His movements were not gentle, but rather carried a hint of venting his anger. However, he deliberately avoided an old scar on the web of his hand with his fingertips.
The strangler vine is a magical creature found only deep in the Black Forest, and its sap cannot be wiped off so easily. Elias knew this, and Draco knew it too, but neither of them mentioned it.
Elias, being tossed around by Draco, had his gaze fixed on Draco's lowered eyelashes.
Draco's eyelashes were long, casting a small shadow under his eyes, and the tip of his nose was slightly red from exertion, as if it had been steamed by the fireplace.
The moon moth took flight from Elias's palm, circled their clasped wrists, and its phosphorescent powder landed on the handkerchief, leaving a few tiny specks of silver.
"Are you done yet?" Elias chuckled, noticing the fine beads of sweat on his forehead. "If you keep rubbing, my sleeve will tear."
Draco abruptly released his grip, and the unsightly marks on Elias's wrist remained unchanged.
Draco shoved the handkerchief back into his pocket and turned to look out the window: "Who cares about you?" Even so, his eyes kept stealing glances at Elias's hand.
The moon moth landed on Draco's shoulder, its wings folding like a folded piece of moonlight.
"It seems to like you more," Elias said, his voice tinged with laughter.
Draco didn't reply, but simply turned his head slightly to catch a glimpse of the little creature out of the corner of his eye. The little moon moth was carefully grooming the phosphorescent powder on its wings with its delicate legs, its movements as meticulous as if it were tending to a precious piece of jewelry.
Outside the door came the sounds of Goyle and Crabbe arguing over a pumpkin pie. Pansy scolded them in a shrill voice for their unseemly eating, and Theodore's voice trying to stop them came through the door. It was incredibly noisy.
The cypress wood in the fireplace crackled and sparked, scattering onto the stone walls of the hearth.
Elias got up and added a piece of wood. When he returned, he had two glasses of pumpkin juice with fine water droplets clinging to the sides of the glasses.
He pushed one of the glasses toward Draco: "The house-elf has added honey, the kind you like."
Draco took the cup, his fingertips touching the cool rim, and suddenly remembered last Halloween. Back then, he was still basking in the pride of the solid gold Snitch model his father had given him, but this year Elias had given him an even more pleasing gift.
"Feed," Draco suddenly spoke, his voice very soft, "Next year..."
"Next year?" Elias raised an eyebrow.
"It's nothing." Draco took a sip of pumpkin juice, and as the sweetness spread across his tongue, he noticed the moon moth on his shoulder stir.
He looked down and saw the little guy tilting his head and rubbing his cheek. The phosphorescent powder landed on his skin, cool and refreshing, like Elias's fingertips that had just touched the back of his neck.
Ripples spread across the black lake outside the window, and green light emanated from the water, making the silver snake tapestry in the dormitory shimmer.
The sound of the moon moth's wings fluttering is very soft, so soft that only they can hear it, like a secret hidden in the shadow of a jack-o'-lantern.
