Chapter 327 Monsters on the Moon
Moon.
The gray earth stretched forward, and the outline of the building at the edge of the field of vision became clearer and clearer as the distance closed in.
The gravitational pull here is very weak.
With each step Lin Mo took, his body would float slightly upwards by a few inches, and the time it took for him to land was more than a beat slower than on the mainland.
Before his journey, he had seen footage on television of astronauts walking on the moon, their slow, elusive movements mirroring his own.
But strangely, his breathing was not affected in any way.
The air is thin yet breathable, as if something is maintaining an invisible lifeline on this land.
Mianmian popped out from his collar, her eight short legs waving in the air a few times before her whole body floated up.
She was taken aback at first, then her eyes lit up, as if she had discovered a new toy.
She rolled over, tumbled in the air, then rolled over again, like a fluffy dandelion seed drifting on the windless, gray earth.
"Daddy! Mianmian can fly!"
"Um."
Lin Mo did not stop her, his gaze remaining fixed on the gray building in front of him.
Yin Xue sat on his shoulder, unusually not joining Mianmian in her antics.
He simply gazed quietly at the enormous moon that occupied half the sky, lost in thought.
The gray earth beneath my feet suddenly churned.
It wasn't an earthquake, nor a collapse, but the sensation of something wriggling beneath the ground.
It looked like some enormous thing was speeding along the shallow surface of the earth.
Lin Mo paused, his right hand already gripping the hilt of the black sword.
Mianmian landed back on his shoulder from the air, her eight short legs stretched straight, her dark eyes fixed on the ground.
The ground exploded.
The gray soil and rocks rolled to both sides, and a huge black shadow suddenly emerged from the ground.
That was a centipede.
If the word "centipede" can still be used to describe this thing.
Its body is at least over twenty meters long, and its body is made up of countless hard carapace segments, each with a row of barbed spikes along its edge.
Its head has no eyes, only a round mouth that takes up half of its head.
The mouthparts are filled with countless tiny, sharp teeth that are rotating at high speed, making a piercing friction sound.
Lin Mo stared at it expressionlessly.
He had seen even larger centipede-like monsters in the wasteland; a beast king-level centipede was like a small hill just by lying there.
But the centipede in front of him gave him a completely different feeling.
Its shell is a sickly grayish-white color, like an empty shell left after all life has been drained, yet it is clearly alive.
"At least level 90."
Yin Xue narrowed his scarlet eyes, stared at the centipede for a moment, and his brows furrowed more and more tightly.
"But I can't identify what kind it is; it's not a species from the mainland."
Before she finished speaking, the gray earth churned once more.
Two, ten, dozens.
The larger ones are over thirty meters long, while the smaller ones are seven or eight meters long.
Not only centipedes, but also deformed multi-legged reptiles, snake-like creatures covered in gray scales, giant worms dragging slime as they wriggle across the ground, and several translucent, seemingly shapeless elemental life forms floating in the air.
They burst forth from the ground from all directions, like an army controlled by some unified will, surrounding Lin Mo in the very center.
Their eyes were devoid of any spirit.
Lin Mo frowned, then lifted his foot again towards the gray building.
This action acted as a signal, and all the monsters moved simultaneously.
The centipede's mouthparts emitted a sharp screech, the reptile's carapace sparked as it rubbed against the ground, the serpentine creature opened its mouth to reveal four rows of inward-curving fangs, and the elemental lifeforms in the sky simultaneously swooped down towards it.
The black sword was drawn.
There are no move names, no charging up, and no unnecessary movements.
Lin Mo simply swept the black sword horizontally, the arc of the blade creating a dark sword light on the gray earth.
This sword light lacked the energy boost of a killing domain and the explosive effect of a fatal blow.
It is simply a basic slash that has been compressed to its extreme after countless stacks of the Sword Steel passive.
The centipede that was closest to the sword light was the first to collide with it.
Its hard shell was sliced open the instant it touched the black sword's blade, like cutting into a block of cold butter with a red-hot knife.
The sword light continued its relentless advance, piercing through the centipede and spreading further back, cleaving the crawling and serpentine creatures that followed it in two.
Popps of grayish-white fluid exploded on the gray earth. The color of the fluid was exactly the same as the color of the earth. When it fell into the gray dust, it blended into the ground and became indistinguishable.
This sword strike killed dozens of demons, the vast majority of which were above level 80, with some even approaching level 90.
While the total experience points are less than those gained from killing Beast King-level monsters on the continent, the sheer number of them makes up for it.
Lin Mo could even feel his experience bar move forward a little.
He did not stop.
He didn't deploy the killing field because he wanted to save his energy.
He didn't release the Soul Corruption Realm because he wanted to see just how many of these demons there were.
He simply gripped his black sword and killed them one by one.
An elemental monster swooped down on him from the sky.
The thing had no fixed shape; it was made entirely of some kind of grayish-white smoke, and its outline kept changing in mid-air.
It opened its massive, smoke-filled mouth, attempting to swallow Lin Mo whole.
Lin Mo had seen this attack method on the mainland before. Elemental enemies were the most troublesome, and physical attacks were almost ineffective against them. They could only rely on the continuous devouring ability.
But it's different now.
The Thousand Eyes Cage ability is activated, locking onto the source of disgust before it.
Lin Mo thrust out his sword.
The sword tip pierced through the smoke, penetrated layers of energy barriers, and precisely struck the crystal core that was constantly shifting its position.
The crystal core emitted a sharp cracking sound, the entire cloud of smoke suddenly froze, and then collapsed as if its skeleton had been removed. The grayish-white smoke and dust slowly drifted away in the microgravity environment, not settling on the ground for a long time.
Lin Mo flicked away the remaining crystal fragments from the tip of his sword and continued forward. The corpses he left behind had formed a gray path.
Various twisted limbs, shattered carapaces, tentacles still twitching slightly, and several translucent elemental remains suspended in mid-air, appearing like frozen smoke against the backdrop of the dark sky.
He charged to the front of the gray building, and finally stopped.
The building was even larger than he had seen from afar before.
Its exterior walls are made of some kind of gray rock with no brick seams on the surface, as if it were carved directly from a single giant rock.
There were no windows or decorations on the walls, only a few bottomless, narrow holes at the very top.
He glanced back.
The gray earth was littered with corpses, stretching as far as the eye could see.
A few of the worms' tails were still twitching slightly, but most of them had stopped moving completely.
The grayish-white fluid pooled on the ground, forming several shallow puddles that reflected the huge moon overhead.
Mianmian jumped off his shoulder and landed on the back of a dead beetle, taking a bite out of it.
She chewed twice, then spat it out, her small tongue dangling from her mouth, her expression scrunched up, just like the disgusted look on Yin Xue's face when she drank the wrong tea.
"It doesn't taste good. It's not nutritious."
She flew back to Lin Mo's shoulder with a pitiful look on her face, rubbing her head against Lin Mo's neck, as if trying to wash away the strange taste in her mouth with his body heat.
Yin Xue flew off Lin Mo's shoulder and landed next to a small reptile corpse.
A crimson glow flickered in her eyes as she examined the corpses of the demons, then shook her head.
"The monsters here lack essence."
She stood up, her tone revealing an undisguised surprise.
"No wonder Mianmian said it's not nutritious. These monsters are more like empty shells that have been created than living creatures."
She paused, then looked up at the gray building.
"It seems they are different from the monsters on the mainland."
Lin Mo didn't speak, but simply sheathed the black sword.
"Go inside and you'll see what's going on."
He stepped onto the steps in front of the building and came to the huge door.
The door was a single piece of gray rock, the same material as the wall, with no door knocker, no keyhole, and nothing that could be called a door opening mechanism.
He reached out and knocked, the stone door echoing with a dull thud that carried far across the empty, gray earth.
There was no response for a while.
Lin Mo waited for a moment, then turned and exchanged a glance with Yin Xue.
Yin Xue shrugged, flew back half a meter, and struck a pose that said, "Go ahead."
Lin Mo took two steps back, raised his right leg, and kicked out.
Boom!
The stone gate trembled violently, and spiderweb-like cracks appeared on the gray rock walls along the edge of the gate frame.
Then the entire door detached from the frame and fell inward with a dull thud.
Lin Mo withdrew his leg, stepped over the threshold, and entered the interior of the gray behemoth.
