Wei Yanqiu's voice choked, her eyes reddened, and tears finally welled up and rolled down her cheeks.

She gave a bitter laugh, a laugh that was even more unsightly than a cry.

"I also thought that those children are all grown up and should be more sensible. Besides, the warnings from the Wei and Lu families are still in effect, so they should have some scruples. I even specifically contacted the school and asked the teachers to keep a close eye on them."

She took a deep breath before she could continue speaking, each word seemingly squeezed out from between her teeth, filled with regret and pain.

"But they started the day after Lu Fangchi left."

On the first day, they tore up all his textbooks and smeared ink all over his desk and chair. Zixian silently cleaned up the mess and went to the registrar's office to collect his new books.

The next day, they cut up his uniform jacket hanging in the coat closet and burned a corner with a lighter.

Zi Xian silently threw away his clothes and put on casual clothes. They became even more brazen... thinking he was indeed a pushover who wouldn't dare to say a word.

"On the third day, after school, they cornered him in a corner behind the gymnasium where discarded equipment was piled up. They pushed him, cursed him for being mute, snatched his schoolbag, and threw it into the dirty ditch next to him..."

Wei Yanqiu's tears flowed freely; she no longer tried to hide them, letting them stream down her face.

"Zi Xian was pushed down, his hand scraped on the cement floor, and it was badly cut and bleeding. His head hit a sharp-edged stone step next to him, and he started bleeding immediately... They probably didn't expect the impact to be so severe. When they saw the blood, they were terrified and scattered in a panic."

No one helped him up. The school bell had rung long ago, and they had all run away... I don't know how long he lay on the ground.

It wasn't until a teacher noticed he wasn't in the classroom or his usual haunts that they started looking for him...

Finally, he himself, using his uninjured hand to support himself, staggered back to the teaching building...

His head and face were covered in blood, as were his hands, and his clothes were dirty and torn... His teacher screamed in terror when she saw him...

Wei Yanqiu burst into tears, her shoulders shaking violently.

"My parents rushed to the school after receiving the call, and when they saw him... my mother fainted on the spot."

My dad... my dad, such a strong person, was holding Zixian, whose head was covered in blood, and his hands were shaking...

"The surveillance footage was retrieved, the lawyers handled the case, and everyone involved was expelled from school. Several of them were long-time business partners of the Wei family, and all of them terminated their cooperation at any cost."

My grandfather used every connection he could to ensure that the two largest and most aggressive ringleaders of the gang, whose businesses were the biggest, suffered complete business collapse within six months, their companies went bankrupt, and they disappeared from the industry entirely.

Wei Yanqiu raised her red eyes and looked at Bian Zhizhi, who was also shocked and in pain, with tears streaming down her face.

"But what's the use of these reprisals? Will they make Zixian's head wound disappear immediately? Will they stop him from bleeding?"

Could he forget the fear and despair of being surrounded, pushed down, and lying alone amidst pain and blood?

"After Zixian returned home from the hospital, his external injuries gradually healed, but he completely locked himself away. He locked himself in his room, refusing to see or talk to anyone, and refusing to eat or drink."

We were afraid he would do something drastic, so we took turns guarding the door day and night, crying and begging him to open it and say a word... But he didn't respond at all, like an empty shell without a soul.

"A year later, Lu Fangchi completed the exchange and couldn't wait to return."

After learning what had happened, he went berserk, his eyes red and reckless as he rushed into Zixian's room... Our whole family—my parents, me—were all eavesdropping outside the door.

Wei Yanqiu's tears flowed even more fiercely, the pain brought on by the memories almost overwhelming her.

"Lu Fangchi was crying inside, sobbing uncontrollably, slapping himself repeatedly, apologizing constantly, saying he shouldn't have left, that he was a bastard... and then... then we heard Zixian speak."

She spoke each word slowly and deliberately, as if using all her strength, to utter those unforgettable words:

"That was the first time he spoke and made a sound a full year after the accident."

He said, "Fang Chi, it's my fault. I've let you down."

The study fell into a deathly silence, broken only by Wei Yanqiu's painful sobs.

Bian Zhizhi was already in tears, her heart aching so much she could hardly breathe.

She finally understood, completely understood.

I understood where the emptiness and fear that occasionally flashed in Wei Zixian's eyes came from, I understood his resistance to darkness, people, and unfamiliar environments, and I even vaguely understood his almost obsessive dependence on and possession of himself.

Perhaps in his broken heart, she became a kind of shield, or a lifeline that pulled him a little out of the cold, dark mire of memories and self-loathing.

His demands and control over her may not only stem from a morbid possessiveness, but also from a fear rooted in trauma.

He feared that this only light would disappear again, plunging him back into eternal darkness.

Later, Lu Fangchi stayed at the Wei family's house and rarely went home. The family hired the best teachers, and they studied together at home.

Zi Xian spoke slowly, only addressing Lu Fangchi, remaining silent most of the time...

Later, things went on and off until three years ago, when my parents' health collapsed due to long-term stress and depression. They decided to give up everything and go abroad for long-term recuperation, leaving the company and Zixian... all to me.

Wei Yanqiu wiped away the tears that kept flowing, trying to calm her violent emotional fluctuations, and looked at Bian Zhizhi again.

"It's been five years, Bian Zhizhi," she said in a hoarse voice. "It's been five years since that incident. Apart from his family and Lu Fangchi, he only talks to you."

I only have so many different emotions towards you—I get annoyed, I become stubborn, and I...want to get closer.

She paused, her voice hoarse, "Sometimes when I see him looking at you like that, I can't help but feel envious, even... jealous."

I've protected him for so many years, trying my best to pull him back into this world, but it's all for naught compared to these past few months since you came.

Bian Zhizhi was unable to say anything.

The overwhelming amount of information and emotional impact left her feeling weak and dizzy. She could only barely keep from slipping by leaning against the edge of the desk.

She was heartbroken by the inhuman torture Wei Zixian had suffered, shocked by the burden and pain Wei Yanqiu had borne alone all these years, and felt endless sorrow and helplessness at her own accidental and doomed intervention.

"I'm so sorry... Mr. Wei, I'm really sorry..."

She sobbed uncontrollably, and besides offering a weak and feeble apology, she didn't know what else to say.

Is it because I feel sorry for her for violating her professional ethics and agreement?

Is it because she inadvertently glimpsed the deepest scars of this family?

I'm sorry, but she can't be the one to save anyone. Instead, she might make things even more chaotic.

"No need to apologize." Wei Yanqiu waved his hand wearily, as if he had used up his last bit of strength, his voice weakening, "It's come to this... The things I gave you, the bonuses, the jewelry, were meant for you anyway, you can do whatever you want with them. And don't even mention the penalty for breach of contract."

She looked at Bian Zhizhi, her emotions gradually calming down, regaining some of her usual clarity. "Take the money you're owed and leave. Leave this place, leave the Wei family, and stay far away from... Li Zixian."

"Perhaps this is truly what's best for him and for you."

Wei Yanqiu gave her no room to refuse or argue; that gesture was both a gesture of seeing her off and the protection she could offer as the older sister after struggling with her own issues.
