Chapter 229 The Difficulties in the Assessment
The area around the testing site was already crowded with people from the transportation station, not only experienced drivers and apprentices, but also some clerks who came to join in the fun.
Everyone chatted and laughed, discussing whether Li Kaixin would pass the assessment this time.
Three examiners were already seated at the assessment table. Following them sat Political Commissar Chen and the two people he had brought with him.
In the center of the testing area, a dilapidated car sat quietly.
This made Secretary Liu, who had just arrived at the assessment station, frown. He turned to Station Chief Zhao, who was standing to the side, and said, "Xiao Zhao, why did you prepare such an old car for the assessment? Hurry up and go down and tell them to change it."
"Secretary Liu, this..." Station Chief Zhao glanced at Political Commissar Chen sitting next to him.
"Hey, Lao Liu, this one will do," Political Commissar Chen immediately chimed in, smiling. "I think Li Kaixin is a pretty spirited young man; he certainly won't be deterred by this little difficulty."
"Old Chen, you've gone a bit too far," Secretary Liu said, his face darkening.
"This is a huge injustice!" Political Commissar Chen put on an innocent expression. "Old Liu, look at all these people watching. If Comrade Li Kaixin had made it through with this car, wouldn't that have been even more proof of his skill?"
Secretary Liu glanced at the crowd gathered below the stage, knowing that the car replacement was out of the question, and simply snorted coldly.
Seeing Secretary Liu's discomfiture, Political Commissar Chen couldn't help but smile slightly.
He was the one who ordered everyone from the transport station to come over.
After parting ways with Secretary Liu, Li Kaixin stayed with his close friends, including Master Chen, Zhou Zhiming, and Wu Tian, waiting for the assessment.
Zhou Zhiming leaned closer and whispered encouragingly to his mentor, "Go for it, mentor! You'll definitely pass!"
But his own clenched fists made him look even more nervous than Li Kaixin.
"Yeah, Kaixin. Your skills are usually so good, even if the test car is a bit broken, it'll be no problem for you." Wu Tian chimed in.
Master Chen, Qian Dazhuang, and Captain Wang all gave him encouraging looks.
Li Kaixin smiled at them, trying to appear relaxed: "Thank you everyone, I will definitely try my best to pass."
However, he himself was still a little unsure.
Although my driving skills are fine and I'm not afraid of a slightly worn-out car, I still have some shortcomings when it comes to maintenance.
I haven't had any formal, systematic training; the experience I received from Master Chen and Captain Wang was barely enough to qualify me for the second-level deputy rank.
Just then, one of the examiners, holding a tin megaphone, called out, "Comrade Li Kaixin, please come to the center of the examination area."
Li Kaixin took a deep breath and walked towards the three examiners.
The crowd immediately fell silent, and all eyes were on him.
Standing before the three of them, the examiner continued meticulously, "Comrade Li Kaixin, please be ready. The first test is driving skills. Please move to the test vehicle."
Li Kaixin nodded and turned to walk towards the dilapidated car in the center of the assessment area.
The three examiners turned to look at Political Commissar Chen and Secretary Liu behind them. After receiving their signal, they took action and followed behind Li Kaixin.
Once all four of them had arrived at the car, Mr. Fang, the examiner, stepped forward and guided Li Kaixin through the route they would be running on the track.
After listening and reading carefully, Li Kaixin had a better understanding of the situation.
In many places, the construction and lines were just newly drawn, barely wide enough for a car to pass through, which is quite demanding.
Back at the testing vehicle, the examiner who had been silent until now spoke up: "Comrade Li Kaixin, you may get in the car and begin."
Without hesitation, Li Kaixin opened the car door and got into the driver's seat.
Looking at the interior of the vehicle, he knew it wasn't from a transport station at all.
I don't know where it came from; even the brand name isn't Liberation.
This made Li Kaixin smile wryly; Political Commissar Chen had really gone to great lengths to prevent him from passing.
Then, I adjusted my emotions.
Calming himself down, Li Kaixin turned the key to start the engine, shifted gears, released the clutch and brake, and the car slowly began to move.
This car is really old. The steering wheel and pedals feel clunky and jerky when you use them.
However, it didn't take long for Li Kaixin to become familiar with it.
On either side of the car stood examiners, watching the moving wheels to see if they crossed the line.
On the stage, seeing that the assessment had already begun, Political Commissar Chen couldn't help but turn to Secretary Liu and tease him, "Old Liu, don't worry, Comrade Li Kaixin is so young, he'll definitely pass."
Secretary Liu was intently watching the scene when he was interrupted, and he turned his head to glare at him fiercely.
Political Commissar Chen was not intimidated at all; instead, his smile deepened. He turned to Station Chief Zhao behind him and said, "Little Zhao, tell us, how old is Comrade Li Kaixin this year? Let us see for ourselves."
When Station Chief Zhao was called out, he broke out in a cold sweat. He didn't know whether to speak up or not, and now he really wished he could disappear on the spot. He couldn't afford to offend either side.
He didn't believe that Political Commissar Chen hadn't investigated Li Kaixin's background before he came; this was clearly a deliberate question posed in front of Secretary Liu.
Secretary Liu naturally noticed Station Chief Zhao's predicament.
He was at odds with Political Commissar Chen, but he didn't want to drag his subordinates into it. So he turned his head and said in a calm tone, "It's alright, Xiao Zhao, there's nothing wrong with talking about this."
Station Master Zhao breathed a sigh of relief and quickly replied, "Comrade Li Kaixin is sixteen years old this year and has been working at the transportation station for exactly two months."
"That's impressive!" Political Commissar Chen deliberately raised his voice, "Old Liu, did you hear that?"
Secretary Liu had no intention of paying any more attention to him and turned his gaze back to the assessment field.
On the field, the examiner kept jogging back and forth around the left and right sides of the car, his eyes fixed on the tire tracks, afraid of missing a single spot.
His enthusiastic demeanor made Master Fang and the other examiner frown.
This person clearly doesn't trust them and insists on keeping an eye on things himself.
However, the assessment was underway, and neither of them could afford to make a scene on the spot.
