Apocalypse: The White Moonlight Became a Possessive Mad Dog
Chapter 125 If I could spend my whole life here
The others shook their heads, having no recollection of where the two had gone.
Wang Shoushan was in a state of confusion. He clearly remembered that Ahan and Shen Chengyin were present when the villagers drowned the intruders with sewage, but in a moment of confusion, both of them disappeared.
Strange.
He followed the crowd back, and before he even entered the village, heart-wrenching cries pierced his ears.
In the middle of the village road, two corpses lay side by side; they were an elderly couple.
Looking at them, Wang Shoushan felt as if a stone was pressing on his chest. He felt heartache, but even more so, a heavy sense of helplessness.
When Ahan and Shen Chengyin went to the old village chief to explain the situation and suggested that the whole village go down the mountain to hide, only the two old men refused to leave no matter what.
They simply couldn't believe that any bad guys would enter the village, and even threw dirty water on the village, saying that Ahan was trying to steal their grain.
It would have been fine if they hadn't left themselves, but they forced their children to stay as well. In the end, the children took their grandchildren and left overnight, without taking a single grain of rice or a single animal.
In the end, only the old couple and their few livestock remained in the entire village.
After all, they were neighbors for decades. Wang Shoushan sighed, rolled up his sleeves, and stepped forward to help with the funeral arrangements.
The village had dug cellars during the war years ago, so it wouldn't have taken much effort to go out and hide for a while. Why gamble with your life?
Several livestock died in the village, but no one was missing, thanks to Shen Chengyin and Ahan.
The next day, after handling the funeral arrangements, the old village chief waved his hand and ordered the dead livestock to be disposed of. He also caught a few fat chickens from his backyard, saying that the whole village should have a good meal together to calm their nerves and celebrate.
Wang Shoushan went to help slaughter pigs and chickens. When he returned home, he found that Shen Chengyin had returned sometime earlier and was standing by a tree in his yard, seemingly lost in thought.
This tree was a small jujube tree in Wang Shoushan's yard, which died three years ago in the winter. At that time, the end of the world had just begun, and Wang Shoushan was so busy that he couldn't take care of this dead tree.
This stay lasted for three years.
But now, the jujube trees that should have withered and died have sprouted new branches and buds. The rotten and decaying trunks have become resilient and full of vitality.
The branches were densely covered with jujube blossoms, their yellowish-green color inconspicuous. One glance was enough to tell that a good harvest was in store.
Wang Shoushan grinned from ear to ear, "In a good mood today? Call Ahan, let's have some fun together tonight!"
Shen Chengyin stood there, a faint smile lingering on his lips.
"Ahan is sleeping, let's go over later."
His voice was not loud, but had a rare gentleness.
Wang Shoushan nodded repeatedly, then turned and went into the small storage room next door. After rummaging around for a while, he found a few small brushes whose bristles were almost bald.
He hadn't seen a bee in ages. The jujube blossoms were so thick; it would be a shame if they didn't bear fruit. He had to think of a way to pollinate the tree.
Dusk was falling.
Wang Shoushan moved a small wooden stool, sat under the jujube tree, and, in the last rays of light, carefully dipped the flower stamens in his few bald little brushes.
Shen Chengyin watched from the side, and even though Wang Shoushan had hinted many times that he wanted Shen Chengyin to help him, Shen Chengyin didn't move an inch.
They just won't help.
Shen Chengyin saved the tree, and Wang Shoushan knew he should thank Shen Chengyin, but that didn't stop him from thinking that Shen Chengyin deserved a beating and should be given a couple of whacks on the buttocks with an iron paddle.
The door creaked open.
Shen Chengyin and Wang Shoushan looked in the same direction at the same time.
Su Han came out wearing an overcoat, her face still showing signs of sleepiness.
Seeing the two locked in a stalemate, he curled the corners of his lips into a smile.
"What are you busy with?"
Wang Shoushan wiped his hands and stood up. "We've been waiting for you. Let's go eat. It's the village's communal meal. Hurry up, don't keep them waiting."
Before Su Han could react, Wang Shoushan dragged her away.
Shen Chengyin followed closely behind, and the three of them arrived at the village's grain drying ground.
The village was too small, and the threshing ground wasn't very big either. A hundred or so people couldn't even squeeze in, so they had to eat in groups in the alley.
People thronged the area, and the aroma of meat filled the air.
A pot hung over the fire, simmering large chunks of meat and dried vegetables, steaming gently. The women were busy steaming buns and mixing wild vegetables, while children flitted between the firelight and shadows, laughing and playing, almost bumping into Su Han's leg.
Su Han reacted quickly, catching a child who was about to fall. Looking at the scene before her, she suddenly pinched herself.
Oh, it doesn't hurt. It really was just a dream.
After so many years in this apocalypse, the survivors have gone mad, killing anyone and everything in sight. There's nothing but suspicion and scheming between people; how could there possibly be such a harmonious scene?
Children, so many children.
Su Han followed Shen Chengyin to three bases, and very few children survived the harsh conditions.
But right now, almost every household in this village has children. Healthy children, radiating vitality.
Perhaps another word would be more appropriate to describe them.
--hope.
Someone saw them, called out loudly to make room for them, and stuffed hot bowls and chopsticks into their hands.
Wang Shoushan took the bowl, found a rock to sit on, and without saying much, buried his head in his food.
The meat was stewed until tender, and the soup was so thick it was sticky. He ate with slurping noises, and soon a layer of fine sweat appeared on his forehead.
The aroma of meat, steamed buns, firewood, and the steaming sweat of living people mingled together and wafted towards you.
Su Han sat down next to Shen Chengyin, the firelight flickering on his face, surrounded by the noisy cheers and laughter of the villagers.
He had just put a bite of meat in his mouth when he heard Shen Chengyin lean close to his ear and whisper:
"It's not a dream."
Su Han looked up and met the man's smiling eyes, and her heart skipped a beat.
"This is the thing I wanted to protect the most."
The man's gaze softened as he placed a piece of baked bread into Su Han's hand.
