Chen Shi was stunned.

He took the thing out; it was a thick, heavy brown paper package.

He opened the paper package.

He pulled out a thick stack of ten-yuan bills, several hundred of them.

There was another piece of paper on top, folded into a neat square.

Chen Shi unfolded the document, revealing a short note of thanks in just a few lines.

"Buy some nutritious food for the child, don't neglect yourself. If you need anything, feel free to contact me, old comrade-in-arms. Thank you."

Chen Shi stared at those lines of text, his hands beginning to tremble.

He looked up, gazing in the direction of the stairs.

My nose tingled slightly, my vision blurred, and hot tears fell onto the back of my hand.

"You cried? What did it say on it?"

Sun Jing turned her head and asked.

He hurriedly raised his hand to wipe his eyes, his fingertips brushing against the corners of his eyes, his voice hoarse and barely audible:

"...It's nothing, let's go inside and see the children."

.........

The car drove into the alley below the apartment building; the rain had stopped.

The road surface was wet, reflecting the light from the streetlights.

Xie Ci gripped the steering wheel, not as talkative as usual.

Fu Hua turned her head and glanced at him.

His face was expressionless, but his brows and eyes were more serious than usual, and the corners of his mouth were pursed.

"Still thinking about Chen Shi?"

She asked.

After a two-second silence, he nodded in thanks.

"Look at him,"

He sighed, "I feel terrible."

Fu Hua didn't say anything, but simply reached out and took his hand that was resting on the gear shift.

Xie Ci was stunned for a moment, then reached out and grasped her hand.

"Back in the military,"

He said, "Chen Shi was the most resilient soldier I ever led."

During a field training exercise, his feet were blistered and blood soaked through his socks, but he didn't utter a sound. He's a tough guy.

He paused, then lowered his voice.

"Just now, he looked like a completely different person, so fearful and uneasy."

Fu Hua gripped his hand tightly.

"It will be alright."

She was very certain: "That child will be alright, believe me."

Xie Ci turned to look at her.

Fu Hua's gaze was steady, shining like the morning star in the dimly lit carriage.

"As long as the child is alive, there is hope. All we can do is give it our all."

Xie Ci looked at her, and after a while, the corner of his mouth twitched.

"Um."

He parked the car and turned off the engine.

Just as the two were about to get out of the car, Fu Hua's gaze fell on the scenery outside the car window, and she stopped.

A person was standing under the light at the entrance of the building.

Wearing a dark gray coat, holding an umbrella, and carrying a thermos in his hand.

Xie Ci followed her gaze and looked over.

He paused for a moment, then quickly unbuckled his seatbelt, pushed open the door, and got out of the car.

"mom?"

Zhou Yun turned around, saw her son, and smiled.

"You're finally back."

Xie Ci quickly walked over and took the thermos from her hand.

"Mom, what brings you here? What time is it?"

Zhou Yun ignored him, walked around him to Fu Hua, and took her hand.

"Huahua, are you tired?"

Fu Hua shook her head.

"Auntie, I'm not tired."

"How could I not be tired? Running around in the rain."

Zhou Yun patted her hand, took the thermos from Xie Ci's hand, and handed it to Fu Hua.

"This is pork rib soup. I simmered it all afternoon. It's raining today, so you must all be feeling damp. Have a bowl when you get back to warm your stomach."

Fu Hua held the warm thermos, feeling a warmth in her heart.

"Thank you, Auntie."

Fu Hua realized what was happening and invited, "Auntie, please come upstairs and have a seat, and have a cup of tea."

Zhou Yun smiled and waved his hand, then looked at the two of them.

"Next time, I still need to bring some porridge to your uncle later. He's working overtime at work and his stomach isn't feeling well."

Fu Hua glanced at Xie Ci: "Then let Xie Ci drive you there."

Zhou Yun smiled and waved his hand: "No need, no need, the driver is still waiting at the door."

Fu Hua looked at Xie Ci.

He nodded in thanks.

"He's Dad's driver."

Fu Hua glanced at the alley entrance and sure enough, there was a black sedan parked there.

Zhou Yun had already taken two steps outside when he turned back and looked at Xie Ci.

"You brat, take good care of Huahua."

He responded with a thank you.

Zhou Yun waved his hand and walked quickly towards the alley entrance. After taking a few steps, he looked back again.

The two people stood at the building entrance; the man was tall and imposing, the woman aloof and reserved.

Standing together, they look perfectly matched no matter how you look at them.

She looked away, a slight smile playing on her lips.

My son has been staying out all night a lot lately.

As a mother, how could she not understand what was going on?

She had already given all the necessary instructions.

Huahua is a mature child, so she doesn't need to worry about her.

Even if, by some chance...

If you have a child, then get married as soon as possible.

Anyway, their family had already made all the preparations and was just waiting for Huahua to nod in agreement.

After she got into the car, she rolled down the window and glanced over there again.

Xie Ci was walking inside with Fu Hua in his arms, the two of them very close together.

Zhou Yun smiled and shook his head, then rolled up the car window.

"Let's go."

The car slowly drove out of the alley.

.........

Upstairs, Fu Hua placed the thermos on the table and turned to change her clothes.

Xie Ci sat on the sofa, watching her come and go without saying a word.

Fu Hua changed her clothes and came out. She saw him still sitting there, so she went over and sat down next to him.

"What are you thinking about?"

Xie Ci didn't say anything, but simply reached out and pulled her into his arms.

Fu Hua leaned against his chest, listening to his heartbeat, each beat heavier than usual.

After a while, Xie Ci spoke.

"Huahua".

"Um?"

"Today at the hospital, when you said you could save that child, I actually..."

He paused.

Fu Hua looked up at him.

Xie Ci lowered his head and met her gaze.

"I believe you, I believe you 100%."

Fu Hua looked at him without saying a word.

Xie Ci pulled her closer to his arms.

"I will believe whatever you say."

Fu Hua leaned back against his chest, a slight smile playing on her lips.

The rain outside the window started falling again sometime ago.

The sound was faint, making a soft, rustling noise as it hit the glass.

The two of them leaned against each other, neither of them saying a word.

After a long while, Fu Hua spoke softly.

"Go to sleep."

Xie Ci looked down at her.

She had already closed her eyes, her eyelashes casting a small shadow under the light.

He reached out and turned off the light, laid her down, lay down next to her, and put his arm around her waist.

The room was quiet, with only the sound of rain.

That night, the two did nothing and slept peacefully through the night.

The next day, sunlight streamed through the gaps in the curtains, and Fu Hua opened her eyes.

There was no one around me.

She sat up and saw a thermos on the bedside table with a note underneath.

The handwriting on the acknowledgment was hasty but forceful: "Breakfast is on the table. There's something urgent with the troops, so I'm leaving now. I'll be back tonight."

Fu Hua looked at the note for two seconds, and the corners of her mouth curved into a smile.

After she finished washing up, she walked to the table.

A bowl of millet porridge, two steamed buns, and a small dish of pickled vegetables, all covered with a bowl and still steaming hot.

After finishing breakfast, she tidied up, grabbed her bag, and headed out.

On the campus of Kyoto University, fallen plane tree leaves covered the ground, rustling underfoot.

Fu Hua was walking towards the physics building when she bumped into someone.

Lu Tingxiao was wearing a dark gray Zhongshan suit and holding a book in his hand.

I stopped when I saw her.
