Hong Kong variety show: The mastermind behind the scenes is emerging.
Chapter 267 A New Home on the Mountain Top
At 10 a.m., a sudden rainstorm last night washed away the summer heat in Hong Kong. At this moment, the clouds and mist over Victoria Harbour had dispersed, and the sky was as blue as a freshly polished sapphire.
A convoy of luxury cars consisting of five Rolls-Royce Silver Spurs and three Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUVs slowly drove out of the Lu family villa, which held memories of Lu Chen's early days of making his fortune.
Instead of heading towards the bustling Central district, the convoy turned around and drove towards The Peak, a sacred place symbolizing the highest power and wealth in Hong Kong.
If you were standing on the opposite bank of Victoria Harbour right now, looking up at the mountaintop with binoculars, you would see that the old mansion that once belonged to a certain Japanese nobleman has disappeared. In its place stands a magnificent architectural complex, its lines extremely simple, seemingly blending into the mountainside, hidden among lush trees.
That was Lu Chen's absolute domain, which took a year and hundreds of millions of dollars to demolish and rebuild – the Peak, No. 7 Peak Road, Lu Family Manor.
"Boss, Madam, we've arrived."
Tian Yangsheng's calm voice came through the walkie-talkie in the lead vehicle.
The massive black wrought iron gate slid open slowly to both sides. Instead of the elaborate European patterns and gilded decorations popular at the time, this gate was made of extremely heavy black stainless steel with a matte finish. Only on the right side of the gate was a single, powerful Chinese character—陆 (Lu).
Low-key and solemn, yet exuding an aura of authority that keeps people at a distance.
The convoy slowly ascended the private driveway paved with dark gray granite, passed through a meticulously manicured bamboo grove, and finally stopped in front of a massive main building.
The car door opened.
Lu Chen was the first to get out of the car. He was dressed in a white casual home outfit today, which made him look particularly relaxed.
After getting out of the car, he immediately went around to the other side of the car, opened the door with extreme care, and reached out to help a young woman with a high belly get out of the car.
At this time, Ruan Mei was seven months pregnant. Her originally slender figure had become fuller due to pregnancy, and her face was radiant with the happiness of becoming a mother. She was wearing a loose maternity dress and habitually carrying a small handbag for holding change—even after becoming a billionaire, her ingrained frugality and charm remained unchanged.
In the cars behind, Lu Chen's "female confidantes" filed out one after another.
The domineering woman in a professional suit, exuding a capable and confident aura; Laura in a white dress, radiating a cool and noble air; Qiu Di in a T-shirt and jeans, with a stunning figure; and Ya Zi in a red jumpsuit, sexy and fiery.
These women, who are considered goddesses by outsiders, are now all consciously surrounding Ruan Mei, carefully protecting the "Empress" of the Lu family.
"Wow...this...this is our new home?" Qiu Di looked up at the magnificent building before her, speechless with astonishment. "Wow, this is...this is huge! How much did it cost?"
Everyone couldn't help but burst out laughing.
"Haha, you've caught your sister Ruan's charm," Lu Chen affectionately flicked her nose. "Don't worry, it's just a house, your husband can afford it."
"Welcome home, sir and madam." Just then, Mary, a butler dressed in a smart black business suit with her hair neatly styled, walked over with a smile.
"Ladies, all the servants, security and culinary teams are in place," Mary said with a slight bow, her demeanor impeccable. "Please allow me to show you around the 'Lu Family Manor,' which was personally designed by Mr. Lu."
Mary made a "please" gesture, and the women followed with curiosity.
"The gentleman's design concept is the boldest and most avant-garde of all the mansions I have ever seen," Mary said as she walked.
Indeed, this house is completely different from the Baroque style popular in Hong Kong in the 80s, which featured Roman columns and crystal chandeliers and was considered nouveau riche.
Lu Chen adopted the "New Chinese Minimalism" style that became popular in later generations.
The exterior walls consist of large areas of exposed concrete and dark wood grilles, paired with massive floor-to-ceiling glass curtain walls. The building's lines are straight and clean, without any superfluous decorations, yet it creates a sophisticated feel through the interplay of light and shadow.
"This is the front garden."
Everyone's eyes lit up. There were no bushes trimmed into animal shapes, nor were there fountains with little angels spraying urine.
Instead, a Zen-like courtyard has been created. A gently flowing stream cascades into the lake through designated channels, adorned with several uniquely shaped Taihu stones, and a gnarled black pine tree with its branches extending diagonally. The water's surface is level with the ground, reflecting the blue sky and white clouds, making the entire house appear to float on the water.
Cola and Sprite also liked the design of the courtyard, wagging their little tails. However, this time they did not rush over to play, but stayed obediently by Ruan Mei's side, looking quite like guard dogs.
"What a beautiful design...it calms me down," Laura couldn't help but exclaim.
"These were all designed by the gentleman himself; the most amazing part is yet to come," Mary said with a smile, pointing to the end of the driveway.
It's a "supercar showroom" with a full glass curtain wall.
Unlike traditional underground parking garages, Lu Chen built his garage on the ground and made it into a transparent display window. At this moment, several of Lu Chen's collectibles are already parked inside: his first supercar, a Porsche 911 Turbo, a Ferrari 288 GTO, and the DeLorean DMC-12 he bought for filming a movie.
Under special lighting, these mechanical beasts appear like works of art, quietly residing inside their glass cases.
Pushing open the five-meter-high front door, everyone officially entered the house.
"hiss--"
A cool and refreshing breeze swept over me, instantly dispelling the heat outside.
"Why is it so cool? But I can't see any air conditioning vents." The boy looked around curiously.
"This is the first technological highlight of this house," Lu Chen explained. "It's called the 'Whole House Five Constant System,' which maintains constant temperature, humidity, oxygen, cleanliness, and quietness."
Lu Chen pointed to the micro-holes in the floor and ceiling: "There's no feeling of traditional air conditioning blowing air. The cool air is radiated through a capillary network, making it naturally cool, just like being in a cave. Moreover, the fresh air system filters the air 24 hours a day, so even if it's humid outside, the room will always maintain the most suitable humidity, and you don't have to worry about the walls getting moldy."
In an era where air conditioners are as noisy as tractors, this kind of "unnoticeable comfort" is simply cutting-edge technology.
The group entered the living room, a huge space with a seven-meter-high ceiling.
Instead of a gaudy crystal chandelier, there are linear LED strips hidden in the gaps in the ceiling, providing soft and even light, as if sunlight were falling from the sky.
The floor is covered with a single slab of Italian grey marble, with a huge handmade wool rug in the center. A set of custom-made low-slung leather sofas are arranged in a U-shape, facing a huge floor-to-ceiling window.
The view outside this window is priceless.
It faces the Central skyline, the most vibrant part of Victoria Harbour.
Lu Chen employed the "borrowed scenery" technique from Chinese gardens, creating a frameless design for the window. Standing in the living room, it's as if the entire prosperity of Hong Kong has become a dynamic painting hanging on the wall.
"Oh my god... watching the fireworks here during the New Year will be absolutely amazing." Ruan Mei stroked her pregnant belly, her eyes sparkling with anticipation.
Passing through the living room, you'll find an open-plan Western kitchen and a closed-plan Chinese kitchen.
The western kitchen area features a huge slab island countertop with a full set of German Miele built-in appliances, a configuration rarely seen even in wealthy Hong Kong homes in the 80s.
"We can make morning tea and bake here from now on," Ya Zi said, looking at the brand-new kitchen utensils, already eager to try them out.
On the other side of the living room is a sunroom with a full glass roof.
The place is filled with all sorts of tropical plants, and there's even a huge banyan tree that grows directly through the roof. Sunlight filters through the leaves, creating dappled patterns. Several rattan rocking chairs are placed under the tree, next to a small koi pond where a few red and white koi are swimming leisurely.
"This is for Amei," Lu Chen said, helping Ruan Mei sit down. "You can sunbathe here, read books, and knit sweaters for the baby."
Ruan Mei's eyes reddened with emotion as she held Lu Chen's hand tightly.
Mary then led everyone to the basement level.
This is a paradise for entertainment.
"This is a private cinema equipped with the most advanced equipment."
Mary pushed open a heavy, soundproof door. Inside was a private cinema that could seat twenty people.
The walls are made of the finest sound-absorbing materials, and the ceiling is a "starry sky ceiling" made of fiber optics. The screen is a massive 200-inch curved screen, equipped with the world's most advanced Dolby surround sound system.
"Of course, the playback equipment is also state-of-the-art," Lu Chen pointed to the screening room, "In addition to the traditional film projector, it is also connected to the engineering version of the high-definition projector developed by Jiahe, which can directly play Dragon VCDs."
Stepping out of the cinema, there's a temperature-controlled wine cellar right next door.
The entire wall of wine racks was filled with Romanée-Conti and Lafite that Lu Chen had collected, with a huge solid wood tasting table in the center. The temperature and humidity here were independently controlled, always kept at the optimal state for wine preservation.
At the end of the basement level is a breathtaking indoor heated swimming pool.
The pool is 25 meters long, with a deep blue mosaic on the bottom, which, when illuminated by underwater lights, resembles the deep sea.
The most amazing thing is that one wall of the pool is made of transparent, high-strength glass, facing the sunken courtyard outside. And overhead, natural light is brought in through fiber optic cables.
"The pool's water circulation system uses copper-silver ion disinfection, which has no pungent bleach smell," Lu Chen said. "And the water temperature is maintained at 28 degrees Celsius all year round."
Looking at the pool of clear water, Ba Wanghua whistled, "Boss, this is even more luxurious than those aristocratic manors I've seen in movies. I want to jump in right now."
Finally, everyone took a hidden elevator to the rooftop terrace on the third floor.
This is a huge rooftop garden.
At the outermost edge of the garden, a circular concrete platform cantilevered out, with a huge "H" painted on it.
The previous homeowner's most praiseworthy design feature was the private helipad.
"Although the helicopter hasn't been delivered yet, it's probably coming soon," Lu Chen said confidently. "In the future, we can take the helicopter directly to work or go to Macau for late-night snacks."
On the other side of the terrace lies the heart of the entire estate—the master suite.
This bedroom occupies an entire half-floor.
Besides the enormous round bed, the walk-in closet which is larger than an average bedroom, and the double jacuzzi, what is most astonishing is its intelligent design.
"Look at these lights, everyone."
Lu Chen walked over but did not press the switch.
As he moved, the baseboard lights in the corner and the ambient lights on the ceiling automatically turned on, with a soft and non-glaring brightness.
"An infrared human body sensing system," Lu Chen explained. "When you get up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, you don't need to fumble for the switch in the dark; the light will automatically follow your movements."
"And this curtain." Lu Chen pressed the switch.
"Whoosh—"
The huge motorized curtains slowly opened automatically, revealing the dazzling night view of Victoria Harbour.
"That's the charm of technology."
Lu Chen stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, looking at the myriad lights outside, his eyes sparkling.
"This house is not just for living in. It is my attempt at a future lifestyle, and also the culmination of all the technologies we currently possess."
At this moment, the sun was setting, and the golden afterglow bathed the entire summit of Victoria Peak.
The women stood behind Lu Chen, looking at this man who seemed like a god overlooking Hong Kong, their hearts filled with admiration and love.
Ruan Mei walked to Lu Chen's side and gently leaned on his shoulder.
"Honey, thank you."
"They gave us such a perfect home."
Lu Chen turned around and gently embraced her, as well as the group of female confidantes who followed him behind.
"Home is home because you are here."
Lu Chen smiled, his gaze sweeping over the magnificent manor that embodied his hard work, finally settling on the distant Central building that still displayed the neon lights of "Dragon Technology".
"Here, we will begin a new life."
"And the world below the mountain..." Lu Chen's lips curled into a confident smile, "will also turn a new page beneath our feet."
As night falls, the lights of the Lu family manor come on.
It is like a bright star, hanging atop Victoria Peak, quietly watching over this city that is about to be completely reshaped by technology and ideas.
