Chapter 119 Spying on the Dock
"Alright, I'll go take a look." Master Zhang stood up. "But I'll take two more helpers with me. Chen Sheng, A Chang, you'll come with me. A Bing, you watch the shop."
Chen Feng's heart skipped a beat, but he remained outwardly calm, simply nodding and saying, "Okay."
Ah-Chang was quite excited, as going to the dock to "see the world" was much more interesting than staying cooped up in his shop.
The three quickly gathered the tools they might need—various wrenches, screwdrivers, hammers, multimeters, a bundle of wires of different thicknesses, and a few spare parts—and packed them into two large tool bags and a toolbox.
Brother Shui had already hailed a pedicab waiting at the door and urged everyone to get on.
The tricycles weaved through the crowded streets of Sham Shui Po, heading towards Victoria Harbour. The closer they got to the pier area, the stronger the salty, briny smell of the sea became, mixed with the complex odors of engine oil, rust, and cargo (especially fish and spices).
About twenty minutes later, the tricycle stopped at the entrance to a relatively quiet pier. This was not one of the glamorous large passenger or cargo piers on Hong Kong Island, but rather an older and more chaotic cargo and barge pier area on the western side of the Kowloon Peninsula. Cargo ships, barges, and fishing boats of all sizes and ages were moored along the pier, while rows of warehouses, storage yards, and simple sheds lined the shore.
Brother Shui led the three men quickly into the dock. During the day, it looked like a busy but ordinary cargo terminal. Workers in worn-out work clothes shouted commands, pushing carts or carrying sacks between the cargo piles and ships. Huge wooden or iron cranes slowly rotated, unloading or loading cargo from the ships. The air was filled with shouts in various dialects, the roar of machinery, and the whistles of ships.
Chen Feng, carrying a heavy tool bag, followed behind Master Zhang, his eyes quickly and discreetly scanning everything around him.
The terrain of the dock: the main passage, the gaps between the cargo piles, the distribution of warehouses, and the paths leading to the sea and the streets behind.
The personnel consisted of several men: besides the laborers, there were also some relatively clean-looking men, smoking cigarettes, patrolling around with their hands behind their backs. These men had sharp eyes and bulging waists, clearly guards or foremen. Occasionally, one or two middle-aged men in black silk shirts, surrounded by attendants, could be seen walking by, their aura distinctly different.
The buildings are characterized by their age: most warehouses are old, brick and wood structures with tall, small windows. There are a few slightly newer concrete buildings, with guards at the entrances. In the guard booths along the edge of the dock, people in uniform (not police uniforms) are drinking tea and reading newspapers, but they don't seem to care much about what's happening on the dock.
Security facilities: almost none. Lighting relies on sparse streetlights and electric lights at the warehouse entrance.
He paid particular attention to warehouses that looked ordinary but were in key locations or had special structures, as well as relatively secluded corners along the edge of the docks where small boats could dock—these places were likely the main nodes for nighttime smuggling activities.
Ah Shui's "Tiger Crane" is located next to a relatively independent berth in the middle of the dock. It is a rusty, old-looking steam-powered crane with several huge wooden boxes suspended by steel cables on its tall iron frame, about four or five meters off the ground, swaying precariously.
Several anxious workers and a middle-aged man in a silk robe with a somber expression had gathered around the crane. Seeing Ah Shui arrive with Master Zhang, the man immediately rushed forward, his voice urgent: "Master Zhang, hurry! This is urgent! It must be loaded onto the ship today!"
"Boss Li, don't worry, let me take a look first," Master Zhang reassured him, walking to the crane's massive base and beginning his inspection.
Chen Feng and Achang put down their tools and followed.
Master Zhang first walked around the machine to check for any obvious external damage. Then he opened the control box cover, and a burnt smell immediately wafted out. The wiring and relays inside were a mess, clearly showing signs of short circuits and burns.
"The motor burned out, and the control circuit was also damaged." Mr. Zhang frowned. "Replacing the motor and rewiring the wiring will be a major undertaking."
Boss Li's face darkened further: "How long will it take?"
"It will take at least half a day. We need to find a suitable replacement motor first."
"I don't care what methods you use! This shipment must be on the ship before 5 PM!" Boss Li's tone was firm. "I'll pay triple the labor cost! I'll have someone buy the motor immediately!"
Master Zhang glanced at the cargo box dangling in mid-air, then at the burnt-out motor, and sighed, "I'll do my best. Chen Sheng, you help me disassemble the old motor. A-Chang, go get the blueprints and multimeter from the tool bag."
The repair work began intensively. Disassembling the burnt-out motor was physically demanding, especially in a cramped space covered in thick layers of grease. Older Mr. Zhang was mainly responsible for directing the work and inspecting the wiring. Chen Feng and Achang became the main force.
Chen Feng didn't complain. He calmly used various tools, striking with a hammer and turning with a wrench, his movements precise and powerful. Sweat quickly soaked his work clothes, and oil and rust covered his hands and face, making him look no different from the dockworkers around him.
Taking advantage of the repair work, his observation range was expanded. He could see the situation around the berth more clearly: a cargo ship with a deep draft was moored in the adjacent berth, with no obvious company markings on its hull, and several men dressed as crew members were smoking on the deck, their eyes wary. At the entrance to the rear warehouse, two men dressed in black short-sleeved shirts with short sticks at their waists were watching them, occasionally talking in hushed tones.
He also noticed that not far from the crane they were repairing, there was a small ramp leading underground, at the end of which was a heavy iron gate, currently tightly closed. Some miscellaneous items were piled up near the entrance, but the ground showed obvious tire tracks. What could be inside? A warehouse? Or…some other purpose?
Around noon, Boss Li sent someone to buy a replacement motor (a slightly used one, the same model, sourced from who-knows-where), and also delivered boxed lunches and soft drinks. The group ate a quick bite next to the machine and continued working.
