The bus stop is diagonally opposite the square, about a five-minute walk away.

Lin Wan walked ahead, her heels clicking crisply on the cement. The Shaanxi couple followed behind, the man carrying a woven bag in one hand and supporting his wife's arm with the other, walking slowly.

Lin Wan turned around at the crossroads and realized they were almost half a street away from her.

She took a deep breath and waited where she was.

As the man approached, Lin Wan noticed a tear at the bottom of the woven bag, tied with a strip of cloth. Inside the bag, a square bulge protruded, and the side of the bag pushed out an ridge from the outer fabric.

The man walked to her side, smiled apologetically, and said something else.

Lin Wan didn't understand and turned to continue walking.

There were quite a few people at the bus stop. The first bus of the morning rush hour hadn't arrived yet, and there were twenty or thirty people gathered around the platform. Lin Wan squeezed to the front of the bus stop and stood there.

The Shaanxi couple caught up. The man placed the woven bag at his feet, and the woman bent down to adjust the position of the child in her arms. The child was awake, his bright eyes looking around, the bluish-purple of his lips particularly striking in the morning light.

The man reached out and gently touched the child's face, whispering something, to which the woman responded.

Lin Wan moved to the side, and the woven bag was blown by the wind, tipping towards her and brushing against the hem of her wool coat.

Lin Wan glanced down and noticed a faint mud stain on the dark fabric.

She immediately kicked the bag away two steps.

She kicked hard, and the toe of her shoe hit the surface, leaving a white mark on the leather.

Lin Wan was so angry her teeth itched. She bent down to look at the white stain, and the more she looked, the angrier she became. She looked up and snapped at the couple, "Can't you keep an eye on your luggage?! You've already ripped off me twice on this trip! Do you even know how much this clothing costs?"

"Comrade, I'm so sorry, I'm really sorry... I didn't mean it, there were too many people, I couldn't see clearly." The man's honest old face turned ashen, and his forehead was covered in fine sweat.

"Sorry is enough? Look at all this dust!" Lin Wan said, pulling a handkerchief from her pocket and dusting it off vigorously, while glaring at Ma Shuanzhu fiercely.

Her voice was quite loud, attracting the attention of several middle-aged women carrying shopping baskets as they passed by. Lin Wan noticed the stares from those around her, and her vanity began to stir again. She dreaded running into acquaintances at times like this, and her eyes became evasive, glancing across the street one moment and then looking down at her toes the next.

Her shifty-eyed appearance, coupled with her rude attitude towards the simple couple, took on a completely different meaning in the eyes of the old ladies in Beicheng who couldn't tolerate any wrongdoing.

A woman named Wang, dressed in a gray cotton-padded jacket and carrying freshly steamed fried dough sticks, looked Lin Wan up and down, then glanced at the pitiful Shaanxi couple behind her, her doubts growing stronger.

"Hey girl, are you picking up a relative?" Aunt Wang asked loudly, the fried dough stick in her hand still steaming.

Lin Wan was already annoyed, and without even looking up, she retorted, "What's it to you? Mind your own business, you country bumpkin!"

That sentence ignited a powder keg. The old lady from Beicheng was known for her sharp tongue.

"Oh my, you little slut, what kind of filth are you spewing?" Aunt Wang blocked Lin Wan's way. "I don't think you're a good person! Look at your eyes, so shifty, like you're looking for your next customer, aren't you? Did you fool these two out-of-towners?"

Upon hearing the word "scam," several elderly men and women who were originally waiting for the bus immediately swarmed around.

"Exactly, I saw her looking down on those two the whole time. Who greets relatives like that?"

"Look at that child, his face has turned purple, and this woman didn't even lend a hand."

Lin Wan had never seen anything like this before, and her face turned pale instantly. Looking at the four or five elderly people around her with unfriendly eyes, she forced a smile and shouted, "What nonsense are you talking about! I was sent by the General Hospital of the Military Region to pick someone up!"

"The main hospital?" Aunt Wang sneered, pointing at the tattered cardboard in Lin Wan's hand. "What kind of place is the main hospital? Aren't all the nurses and doctors there kind and friendly? Look at your arrogant attitude, trying to impersonate a government official with a piece of cardboard? I think you're a human trafficker trying to lead these two honest people to a shady den!"

The man from northern Shaanxi, named Ma Shuanzhu, was listening nearby, completely bewildered. He didn't understand much of the local dialect of Beicheng, but he saw the group surrounding the woman who had led the way. He was sweating profusely, repeatedly saying, "Comrade, comrade, she's from the main hospital... for treatment, for treatment..."

In his anxiety, his dialect became even stronger. To the older women, this sounded like a cry for help.

"Listen to this man, he's so anxious he can't even speak properly!" Aunt Wang slapped her thigh and pointed at Lin Wan, shouting, "Gentlemen, stop her! Don't let her get away! These days, even beggars dress so fashionably!"

An old man holding a long pipe stood directly in front of Lin Wan and said, "Girl, come with us to the police station. We'll explain everything before you leave."

Lin Wan was both anxious and embarrassed, and tried to push through the crowd to get out. Her leather shoes had too high heels, and she suddenly twisted her ankle during the shoving, making a crisp sound.

"Ouch!" Lin Wan cried out in pain, losing her balance and landing hard on her bottom on the cold, blue brick floor. The cardboard sign that read "Heart of China" fell into a nearby muddy puddle and instantly turned into a mess.

"Catch the human traffickers! Catch the human traffickers!" Grandma Wang's shouts attracted the attention of the police officers patrolling the area.

Behind the shadows of the trees across the street, guard Xiao Wang was squatting on the ground, his hands tightly covering his mouth, his shoulders trembling as he tried to suppress his laughter until his face turned purple.

"Oh my god... This plot is more exciting than anything on stage." Xiao Wang rubbed his chest to relieve himself. He originally wanted to step forward to help, but when he saw Lin Wan sitting on the ground with mud and tears all over her face, his wicked sense of amusement came over him.

This kind of arrogant young lady should be taught a lesson by the aunties and uncles of our northern city.

Xiao Wang thought to himself, since Commander Gu told him to "keep an eye on things," he had to keep a close eye on them. As long as the Shaanxi couple didn't get into trouble, letting Lin Wan stay in the police station for an hour or two would be a relief for her delicate feet.

As two uniformed policemen ran across the road, Xiao Wang shrank further into his military overcoat and backed away.

"What are you doing! Let me go!" Lin Wan struggled on the ground, her lake-blue wool coat covered in a large patch of yellow mud, her hair was disheveled, and a few strands of hair were stuck to her face, making her look as disheveled as a madwoman.

"Behave yourself!" A young policeman said sternly, grabbing Lin Wan's arm. "Someone reported you for human trafficking. Come with us!"

"My dad is Vice President Lin of the main hospital! I'm Lin Weiguo's daughter!" Lin Wan shouted hysterically, trying to reveal her identity.

The policeman frowned, looking at her filthy clothes with disdain in his eyes: "Don't even mention Vice President Lin; even if you said your father was the King of Heaven, you'd still have to be interrogated at the station first. Take her away!"
