Chapter 10 Promotion to Deputy Team Leader
The afternoon sun slanted in through the small window in the attic. Chen Feng sat on the edge of the folding bed, talking to himself.
"Deputy Team Leader of Internal Security Team Three. Base salary: 1,000. Two meals provided, performance-based pay is separate."
one thousand.
This number kept circling in his mind.
Back in the mountains, he spent his days blasting rocks and carrying stone slabs, working so hard he could barely straighten his back, and he only earned twenty yuan a day. Here, a thousand yuan a month is the minimum.
He looked up and saw Lin Fang leaning against the window smoking, her silk robe loosely draped over her body, half of her calf exposed, dazzlingly white.
"Sister Fang," Chen Feng turned around and asked, "What does this deputy team leader do?"
"Managing people." Lin Fang flicked away her cigarette ash, glanced at him sideways, and said, "Simply put, you used to be someone's servant, but now you can command a small group of people to do the work."
"Can I command Blackie?" Chen Feng asked instinctively.
Lin Fang was amused by him: "You should work in the industry for a few more years before dreaming about this. Right now, you're in charge of those young guys in Group Three, and Blackie is still your boss."
She walked over, stubbed out her cigarette in the ashtray, picked up the contract and flipped through it, casually saying, "However, with Sister Hong involved, Blackie won't dare to target you too openly. When you go tonight, remember to report to her office first."
Chen Feng nodded, then couldn't help but ask, "Why did she help me?"
"You mean Sister Hong?" Lin Fang sat down opposite him, crossed her legs, and swung her feet. "There's never a shortage of good fighters in this place, but what's lacking is—"
She looked up at him, her eyes unreadable: "He's willing to take responsibility for others, and he knows his limits."
Chen Feng paused for a moment, then said in a low voice, "I didn't cause you too much trouble last night, did I?"
Lin Fang was taken aback for a moment, then burst out laughing: "So you actually know to ask me?"
She reached out and poked his forehead: "You made yourself look like that all night, do you know how many favors I have to do at the venue? There are a bunch of people waiting to see me make a fool of myself, including Sister Hong and Wang Defa."
It was said to be a complaint, but the tone wasn't genuine.
Chen Feng scratched his head and smiled awkwardly: "I'll be more careful next time."
"Remember what you said." Lin Fang stood up. "Get up, I'll pick out some decent clothes for you. If you wear that tattered camouflage outfit tonight, be careful Blackie doesn't use it as a negative example in the meeting."
……
Lin Fang's wardrobe wasn't large, but it was crammed full of all kinds of clothes, the scents of perfume and laundry detergent mixed together, sweet and gentle.
She pulled out a dark gray shirt, a pair of black trousers, and a navy blue tie from her ex-boyfriend and tossed them into Chen Feng's arms: "Wear this tonight. Find a clean vest to wear underneath."
Chen Feng held the tie, perplexed: "How do I tie this?"
Lin Fang was stunned for a moment, then suddenly laughed: "What a country bumpkin!"
She walked over and took the tie from his hand: "Stand still and don't move."
Chen Feng stood up straight obediently. Lin Fang tiptoed, wrapped the tie around his neck, and deftly tied a knot in front of his chest.
She was very close, almost touching him. Her silk robe was slightly ajar, revealing a glimpse of white skin underneath. The fragrance of her hair and the warmth of her skin filled Chen Feng's breath.
"Nod your head," she said softly.
Chen Feng's Adam's apple bobbed, and he did as she said. He pressed his chin down, his forehead almost touching the top of her head.
"Your neck is really thick," Lin Fang muttered as she tightened her tie. "Like an ox."
"I've been carrying stones since I was a child," Chen Feng answered honestly.
Lin Fang was amused by him and looked up at him. Her gaze held a mixture of scrutiny, admiration, and a possessiveness that she herself was unaware of.
"Alright." She patted his chest. "Look up."
Chen Feng looked up as instructed. In the mirror, a young man stood there, dressed in a well-fitting shirt, trousers, and tie, with broad shoulders and a straight back. He still had a rustic air about him, but also a sharp edge.
He was stunned for a moment: "This...is it me?"
"Could it be me again?" Lin Fang peeked into the mirror from behind him, then patted him on the shoulder. "Remember, you're not just the little brother from my hometown anymore, you're also the deputy head of the Golden Splendor Internal Security Team. Don't embarrass me in public."
Chen Feng looked at himself in the mirror and slowly nodded: "I won't embarrass you."
Looking at his expression, Lin Fang couldn't explain why, but she felt a sense of relief mixed with a strange tightness in her chest.
"Alright." She turned to get her bag. "Rest at home a little longer, and be there before seven tonight. Remember to eat, don't drink on an empty stomach again."
Upon hearing the word "drinking," Chen Feng's stomach churned reflexively, and he quickly let out a soft "Hey."
Lin Fang walked to the door, then suddenly turned back: "There's more—"
"Um?"
"Don't try to get close to girls in the club," she said, glancing at him and threateningly adding, "or I'll beat you up when we get home."
Chen Feng was stunned: "I didn't—"
The door slammed shut.
……
At six o'clock in the evening, at the magnificent golden entrance.
As soon as the neon lights came on, the two stone lions at the entrance looked even more ferocious under the lights. Those coming and going were either businessmen in suits and ties or men and women dressed in flamboyant attire.
Chen Feng stood at the door in his newly changed uniform, his name tag gleaming coldly.
The security guards on the early shift were changing shifts. When they saw him, their eyes were filled with complicated emotions. Yesterday he was just a handyman carrying a mop, but today his name tag had a few more words on it—"Deputy Team Leader of Internal Security Group Three".
"Hey, Deputy Chen... Deputy Chen." The security guard who was smoking at the entrance yesterday scratched his head and forced a smile. "Working the night shift tonight?"
Chen Feng nodded: "Mm."
He wasn't arrogant or putting on airs. The man, on the contrary, breathed a sigh of relief and smiled more sincerely: "Hey, I'll need your help looking after me inside."
Chen Feng grunted in response, said nothing more, and stepped through the gate.
The lobby was brightly lit, with crystal chandeliers gleaming coldly and the floor so smooth it reflected images. The receptionist's smile was impeccable, and the angle at which she bent over seemed to have been measured.
As he passed through the employee entrance, Xiaoli was running out carrying a stack of menus. She spotted him and paused, surprised. "Oh, you really got promoted to deputy team leader?"
Chen Feng glanced at her: "Good eye."
Xiaoli giggled twice, then lowered her voice: "So from now on, should I call you—Brother Feng?"
Chen Feng shook his head: "Call me Chen Feng."
He's not used to being called "brother," because it implies responsibility, and he's far from that level yet.
Xiaoli stuck out her tongue: "Okay, Chen Feng. I'll treat you to a soda later when I have time."
"Drink less sugary drinks tonight," Chen Feng casually said. "My tooth hurts."
Xiaoli paused for a moment, then laughed and ran away, swaying her hips.
……
Internal Security Department Office.
Blackie had his legs propped up on the table, a toothpick dangling from his mouth, chatting and laughing with a few of his underlings. When he saw Chen Feng come in, his face darkened at first, but then he quickly put on a smile again.
"Hey, our great hero's here." He said sarcastically, "You really made a scene last night, didn't you? You drank a bottle of baijiu like it was water. I've been around here for so many years, and this is the first time I've ever seen anything like it."
The security guards inside the room all looked at Chen Feng at the same time, their eyes filled with surprise, admiration, and barely concealed curiosity.
Chen Feng stood at the door and nodded to everyone: "Hello everyone, my name is Chen Feng. I'll be in Group 3 from now on, so please take good care of me."
Blackie clicked his tongue, put his feet down, and patted the table: "Come on, let's introduce everyone."
He pointed to the tall, thin guy in the corner: "That monkey, he's the best at running errands in Group Three."
He then pointed to a burly man next to him, as strong as a wall: "Dazhuang, you may be a little slow-witted, but you're quick on your feet."
The monkey stood up first, grinning and extending his hand: "Feng... Chen Feng, welcome, welcome."
His knuckles were prominent, yet surprisingly strong. Chen Feng reached out and shook his hand.
Dazhuang, somewhat shy, chuckled sheepishly, "If you need anything in the future, just let me know."
"Yeah, let's do it together," Chen Feng replied simply.
Seeing that the atmosphere wasn't too bad, Blackie coughed and adopted a "business as business" demeanor: "Alright, enough nonsense. Chen Feng, from today onwards you are the deputy leader of Group Three. Tonight, your Group Three will mainly be keeping an eye on the VIP passage on the second floor, especially the area around 888."
When he said "888", the corner of his mouth twitched.
"However—" Blackie's tone shifted, staring at Chen Feng, "Remember, not all customers are people you can mess with. Sister Hong covered for you last night, but it was still illegal. Doing it again is illegal. Understand?"
Chen Feng looked at him and said, "I'll decide for myself what I should and shouldn't mess with."
Dark-skinned man narrowed his eyes, his smile turning cold: "Oh, you've grown wings, huh? Fine, I'll see how high you can fly in the next couple of days."
The air in the room suddenly felt stagnant.
The monkey nudged Chen Feng with its elbow and whispered, "Let's go, it'll be time to get on duty soon."
Chen Feng nodded, stopped arguing with Hei Pi, and turned to leave with Monkey and Da Zhuang.
As soon as they stepped outside, Monkey lowered his voice and said, "Don't confront Blackie head-on; he holds grudges."
Chen Feng hummed in agreement: "Understood."
