Chapter 80 The King of Hell Transforms into a Clingy Person
As soon as it got light, straight plumes of white smoke rose from the chimney of No. 6 courtyard.
Meng Yaya was awakened by a series of clanging and banging sounds of pots and pans being smashed.
She rubbed her sleepy eyes, kicked away the still-snoring Black Wind, slipped on her little cloth shoes, and floated to the kitchen door like a little ghost.
Gu Changfeng, wearing Lin Wanrou's floral apron, had his long legs hunched over in front of the stove, stirring something in a pot with a large iron ladle. His posture looked more like he was mixing cement than boiling eggs.
His face, which was usually as cold as ice, was now beaming with a smile he couldn't suppress, and he was humming an unknown tune, completely off-key.
"Dad," Meng Yaya said, clinging to the doorframe with a look of disgust, "Are you boiling eggs or practicing Iron Palm? You're going to poke a hole in the bottom of the pot."
Gu Changfeng was startled. When he turned around and saw that it was his daughter, his smile deepened, and his eyes and brows radiated a refreshing energy.
"Awake? Go wash your face yourself." Gu Changfeng was in an incredibly good mood. He waved his hand and said, "Dad's making breakfast today. I'll show off my skills to you two."
Meng Yaya pouted. Show off your skills? More likely you'll blow up the kitchen.
She was just about to complain when she heard a noise coming from the inner room.
The curtain was lifted, and Lin Wanrou came out.
Today she wore a faded light blue blouse, her hair loosely tied back, and although she wasn't wearing any makeup, she had a healthy glow, her skin fair and rosy, even more delicate than a freshly peeled egg. She just walked a little slowly, with one hand seemingly resting on her lower back.
As soon as Gu Changfeng saw his wife come out, he immediately threw down his spoon and darted over in a few steps, his movements as agile as a cheetah.
"Why are you up?" He grabbed Lin Wanrou's arm, his tone so clingy that it gave Meng Yaya goosebumps. "Didn't I tell you to sleep a little longer? I'll bring the food to the kang (heated brick bed) when it's ready."
Lin Wanrou blushed, glanced subconsciously at her daughter at the door, and pinched the soft flesh on Gu Changfeng's waist.
"Let go, the child is watching." Her voice was soft, a little hoarse from just waking up. "I'm not disabled, I can't get out of bed to eat."
"That's different." Gu Changfeng, thick-skinned and unconcerned about the pain, took the opportunity to grab her hand and squeeze it in his palm. "If you're tired, you need to rest. Last night..."
"Shut up!" Lin Wanrou was so anxious she almost covered his mouth, her face instantly turning red to the roots of her neck. She glared at him fiercely, "If you go to Hu Qin again, you'll sleep in this stove tonight!"
Gu Changfeng chuckled, not annoyed at all. His roguish demeanor completely shattered his lifelong reputation in the military region.
"Alright, alright, I'll do as the leader says." He helped Lin Wanrou to sit down at the octagonal table, and then put a cotton cushion on the stool. His attentiveness was even more meticulous than when serving the commander. "You sit down, I'll go get the rice."
Meng Yaya squatted on the threshold, took out a handful of sunflower seeds from her pocket, handed one to Hei Feng next to her, and ate one herself.
"Black Wind, did you see that? This is what you call an old house on fire—it's beyond saving."
Black Wind whimpered and buried its head in its front paws. This dog food is too much; even a dog won't eat it.
Before long, three large bowls were brought out.
Meng Yaya's bowl contained plain white porridge with pickled vegetables, while Gu Changfeng's bowl contained mixed flour steamed buns.
In front of Lin Wanrou, however, was a large bowl of brown sugar water, with four round poached eggs inside, steaming hot and with a sweet aroma that wafted into her nose.
"Eat it while it's hot." Gu Changfeng handed over the chopsticks, then broke half of the steamed bun in his own bowl and insisted on giving it to Lin Wanrou, "to replenish your qi and blood."
Meng Yaya tapped the rim of her bowl with her spoon and protested in her childish voice, "Dad, your favoritism is too obvious! I'm growing too, I want to eat eggs too!"
Gu Changfeng glanced at her, took out a handful of White Rabbit milk candies from his pocket, and slammed them on the table.
"Kids eat candy, adults eat eggs. This candy was given to you by your godfather, it's all yours."
Looking at the pile of sugar and then at the bowl of brown sugar and eggs, Meng Yaya knew perfectly well that her mother was being treated like royalty.
Lin Wanrou felt a little embarrassed and wanted to share two eggs with Ya Ya, but Gu Changfeng stopped her with a look.
"She's craving it, not hungry," Gu Changfeng said, then suddenly stood up and walked to the water vat.
The water tank was empty yesterday. Without saying a word, Gu Changfeng picked up the two large tin buckets next to him and strode over to the hand pump in the yard.
With a few splashes, the two buckets were filled to the brim, weighing at least a hundred pounds.
Gu Changfeng carried two buckets of water into the house without even panting, and steadily poured them into the water vat without spilling a single drop.
"See that?" Gu Changfeng clapped his hands, raised an eyebrow at Lin Wanrou, his eyes showing a mix of smugness and a desire for credit.
"These arms are so much better now. I could carry you around the military area three times without even breaking a sweat, let alone carry water."
Looking at his strong arms, Lin Wanrou felt a huge weight lifted from her heart. She bit her chopsticks, her eyes full of laughter, but spat out a curse: "Aren't you afraid of biting your tongue? Hurry up and eat."
This breakfast was incredibly greasy.
Gu Changfeng kept putting pickled vegetables on Lin Wanrou's plate and asking if the sweet soup was sweet. His eyes were glued to his wife, as if he wanted to devour her whole.
Meng Yaya finished the last mouthful of porridge and let out a burp. She felt not so much that she was full, but rather satiated.
The relationship between these adoptive parents is progressing rapidly, so it seems she, the third wheel, will have to dim her brightness a bit from now on.
Just as the family of three was enjoying a happy time, and Gu Changfeng was preparing to clear the dishes and show off his good husband qualities, a series of hurried footsteps suddenly came from outside the yard.
The footsteps were chaotic and hurried, indicating that something urgent had happened.
Immediately afterwards, with a "bang," the courtyard gate was kicked open.
Xiao Zhang from the guard company rushed in, sweating profusely, his hat askew, and his face looking terribly pale.
"Commander...Commander! Something terrible has happened!" Xiao Zhang gasped for breath, leaning against the doorframe.
Gu Changfeng's smile vanished instantly, replaced by a chilling aura. He shielded Lin Wanrou behind him and asked in a deep voice, "What's the panic? I'll hold up the sky if it falls. What happened?"
Xiao Zhang swallowed hard, pointed towards the main entrance, and looked troubled and terrified.
"A group of people have arrived at the main gate! They claim to be relatives from your hometown. There's an old lady there, and she's brought her whole family. They're lying around at the main gate of our military region, making a scene!"
"The old woman cried and shouted that you had no conscience, that you disowned your own mother after becoming a high-ranking official, and that you wanted... and that your daughter-in-law to pay for it with her life!"
Lin Wanrou's originally rosy face instantly turned pale, and the chopsticks in her hand fell to the ground with a "clatter".
It's time to come, it's coming.
A ruthless glint flashed in Gu Changfeng's eyes, and the murderous aura he carried from the battlefield instantly erupted, chilling the air in the room by several degrees.
"Wang Guifen." He squeezed out these three words through gritted teeth, his fists clenched so tightly they cracked.
"Fine, I didn't even go to settle accounts with her, but she came to my door looking for death."
Meng Yaya jumped off the stool, patted the sunflower seed shells off her hands, and in her big, clear eyes, there was no trace of childlike innocence left.
A chillingly wicked smile spread across her face as she pulled a small wooden gun engraved with the word "Zhentian" from her yellow backpack and tucked it into her waistband.
"Dad, Mom, don't panic."
Meng Yaya called Hei Feng over, waved her little hand, and her childish voice was full of excitement.
"Let's go see how this play about sending someone to their death a thousand miles away is actually performed!"
