Chapter 76 For the sake of revolutionary friendship, let's squeeze together on the kang .
It was completely dark.
The stove inside was burning brightly, and steam rose from the thermos spout, spreading that ambiguous warmth everywhere.
Lin Wanrou stood there holding the rolled-up quilt, her face more flushed than a red cloth. Her hands, which were usually steady enough to sew shoe soles, were now gripping the corner of the quilt so tightly that her knuckles were turning white.
"Um... shall I put this here?" She pointed to the empty space next to Gu Changfeng, her voice weak.
Gu Changfeng leaned against the pillow, his left arm crossed over his chest, and his right hand scratched the blanket a couple of times awkwardly.
His Adam's apple bobbed, and his voice, usually booming like a soldier's, sounded like it was stuffed with cotton: "Fine, we'll lay it there. Closer... more convenient."
What's convenient about it?
Both of them were stunned when they heard this.
Meng Yaya lay on the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed), her little head buried in the pillow, her shoulders twitching. This cheapskate father of hers, usually seems quite shrewd, but when it comes to crucial moments, his mouth is like it was borrowed.
Lin Wanrou didn't reply, but took off her shoes and got onto the kang (heated brick bed). She moved quickly and spread out the bedding in a few moments. The two quilts were placed side by side, with a seam in the middle so narrow that even a needle couldn't be inserted.
"Wife..." Gu Changfeng suddenly called out.
"What's wrong? Does your wound hurt?" Lin Wanrou immediately knelt up and reached out to touch his forehead.
"No." Gu Changfeng shrank back, his dark face turning a purplish-brown. "Um, I'm sticky. I want to wipe myself off."
He had rolled around in the mud, covered in blood and sweat. Although he later changed into a dry tank top, the stench from his body was still strong when the heating came on. He himself found the smell repulsive, let alone letting his wife sleep next to him.
Lin Wanrou breathed a sigh of relief, turned around and got off the ground: "Wait here, I'll go get some water."
A moment later, an enamel basin was brought in, filled with hot water and steaming. Lin Wanrou soaked a towel, wrung it out until it was half dry, and was about to slap it on Gu Changfeng's face.
"I can do it myself." Gu Changfeng subconsciously stretched out his right hand.
As a result, his right hand was still trembling, and the handkerchief fell onto the quilt as soon as he took it, soaking a large area.
The air was silent for two seconds.
Gu Changfeng gritted his teeth in frustration: "This hand is really damn useless."
"Alright, stop showing off." Lin Wanrou picked up the handkerchief and glared at him reproachfully. "I'm a doctor. In the eyes of medical staff, there are no men and women, only patients. Sit down properly."
This glance wasn't intimidating; it was more like a tickle on Gu Changfeng's heart.
He became obedient, stiffening his body as Lin Wanrou manipulated him.
A warm towel was wiped across his cheeks and neck, then down his collar. Lin Wanrou unbuttoned his vest, revealing his muscular chest.
The surface was covered in scars, crisscrossed with bullet holes and knife marks. The longest one stretched diagonally from the collarbone down to below the ribs, like a crawling centipede.
Lin Wanrou's hand stopped.
She only knew that he was fighting desperately on the front lines, but she didn't know he was fighting like this.
"Ugly, isn't it?" Gu Changfeng's voice was muffled. "Did I scare you?"
"No." Lin Wanrou's nose stung, and she moved even more gently, as if afraid of disturbing those old wounds. "Does it hurt?"
"I've long forgotten." Gu Changfeng looked down at the whorl of hair busy on his chest, smelling the faint scent of soap on her, his heart was beating a little fast, "Wife, a little lower."
Lin Wanrou's hand trembled, and she almost dropped the handkerchief.
Gu Changfeng realized the ambiguity of his words and quickly tried to salvage the situation: "I meant my back, my back is itchy."
Lin Wanrou blushed and made him turn to the side. His broad back was covered in sweat, his muscles taut like stone. She took a towel and wiped him away little by little, her fingertips inevitably touching his burning flesh.
With each touch, Gu Changfeng's muscles twitched.
This isn't a bath; it's torture.
After finally finishing wiping, Gu Changfeng felt even more exhausted and sweaty. Lin Wanrou's face was so red it looked like it could bleed, and she fled with the basin of water.
When she returned, the lights in the house had been turned off, leaving only a faint red glow coming from the stove.
Meng Yaya had already secured a prime spot at the very back of the kang (heated brick bed), wrapped in a small quilt and fast asleep, snoring away. However, her sleeping posture was a bit strange; she was lying across the head of the kang and the wall, effectively blocking out the spot that was originally hers.
Lin Wanrou had no choice but to lie down in the spot next to Gu Changfeng on the outside.
The two were separated by only a thin cotton undershirt.
Gu Changfeng lay flat on his back, his left arm raised, his right hand placed neatly on his stomach, not daring to even breathe loudly.
Quiet. Too quiet.
It was so quiet that you could hear the black wind scratching at the door outside the window, and the faint breathing of the person next to you.
Lin Wanrou had her back to him, her body stiff and straight.
About ten minutes later, Gu Changfeng felt the excruciating pain in his arm return. During the day, the ointment helped, but at night, it felt like a small file was scraping back and forth between his bones.
He couldn't help but gasp.
"Does it hurt?"
The person next to her immediately turned over. In the darkness, Lin Wanrou's eyes shone brightly, filled with worry.
"A little," Gu Changfeng honestly admitted. "It's nothing, I'll just have to bear with it."
"Why should I endure this? This needs to be cleared." Lin Wanrou didn't think much of it and reached her hand directly into his blanket, accurately touching his left hand fingers.
Those fingers were swollen like carrots and as cold as ice.
Lin Wanrou wrapped his fingertips in her warm palms and gently massaged them to improve blood circulation: "The doctor said that poor peripheral circulation can easily lead to necrosis. Let me warm them up for you."
Their hands were clasped together inside the blanket.
Gu Changfeng felt a warm current rush from his fingertips to his head. The pain was still there, but it didn't seem as unbearable anymore; instead, it gave rise to a tingling sensation that he found irresistible.
He turned his head and looked at the face so close to his face in the dim light of the fire.
"Wanrou".
"Hmm?" Lin Wanrou lowered her head, focusing on squeezing his fingers, her voice soft and sweet.
"It's so kind of you."
Lin Wanrou paused, burying her face even lower: "What nonsense are you talking about? Go to sleep."
She didn't pull her hand away.
Gu Changfeng's grin stretched from ear to ear. He mustered his courage and quietly moved his good right hand under the covers, slipping through the gap between them and accurately grasping Lin Wanrou's other hand.
Lin Wanrou trembled and tried to break free.
"Don't move," Gu Changfeng said stubbornly. "My hands are shaking; I need to grab something to keep them steady."
That reason is so ridiculous it's beyond belief.
But Lin Wanrou didn't move again.
Just as the atmosphere between the two was perfect, with the air thick with romance, Meng Yaya, who was fast asleep, suddenly turned over.
A leg suddenly landed on Gu Changfeng's stomach with a "thud".
Immediately afterwards, the little girl closed her eyes and mumbled indistinctly, "Black Wind... bite his butt... don't steal my braised pork..."
Gu Changfeng's romantic thoughts were instantly extinguished by that kick.
He looked at his daughter's domineering sleeping posture with a mixture of amusement and exasperation, then at his wife who was covering her mouth and chuckling. For the first time, he felt that this life was truly fulfilling.
