Chapter 4: Luncheon meat with white noodle soup drives the beasts in the hospital crazy with craving
The farce in the courtyard ended, and Lin Wanrou closed the dilapidated wooden door with trembling hands. She used several planks to prop up the door frame, as if that would keep the man-eating demons outside.
The room was dimly lit, with only a few streaks of gray light seeping in through the cracks in the windows.
Meng Yaya sat on the edge of the earthen bed, her little belly making a long "gurgle" sound in perfect harmony.
This body is severely depleted; that half-eaten compressed biscuit was just enough to fill the void, and the energy it had was completely used up when it threw the stone.
Hearing the voice, Lin Wanrou's eyes reddened again. She turned around and rummaged through the wooden box containing only a few tattered clothes, hoping to find something to eat, but all she found at the bottom were a few shriveled rat droppings.
"Ya Ya, Mom is useless..." Lin Wanrou said, her back to her daughter, her shoulders slumping.
Meng Yaya jumped off the kang (a heated brick bed) and walked behind Lin Wanrou with her short legs.
"Mom, start the fire."
Lin Wanrou was taken aback and turned around: "To start a fire? We're out of grain, we only have half a bag of chicken feed, we can't eat that, it'll make us constipated..."
"There is food."
Meng Yaya pulled Lin Wanrou's hand and walked to the stove. Although the house was dilapidated, at least it had a separate small earthen stove, so they didn't have to share the large kitchen with that awful family.
She looked around and made sure the doors and windows were sealed tightly, then an idea struck her.
The gray, dimly lit space warehouse reopened.
Meng Yaya waved her little hand.
Suddenly, a five-pound bag of refined white flour, a can of luncheon meat, two large tomatoes, and several eggs appeared on the stove.
Lin Wanrou was so frightened that she almost fell to the ground.
Those were cookies, small enough to be hidden in a sleeve, but this bag of flour...
"This...this..." Lin Wanrou pointed at the bag of flour, her lips trembling so much she couldn't speak. The flour was dazzlingly white, and the bag was printed with words she couldn't understand; it was nothing like the grayish-black flour from the supply and marketing cooperative.
"It was given to me by the God of Gods." Meng Yaya said without changing her expression, bringing out the reason she had already made up, and emphasizing her words, "He said my body is too weak, so it doesn't hurt when I fight bad guys, and I need to eat meat to gain strength."
Looking at her daughter's serious little face, and then at the things that had appeared out of nowhere, Lin Wanrou's materialistic principles completely snapped.
But none of that matters.
The important thing is that my daughter survives.
"Grandpa Immortal... is a great benefactor." Lin Wanrou knelt down with a thud and kowtowed to the void. "Thank you, old immortal, for saving my life."
Meng Yaya pulled her up: "Mom, hurry up and cook, I'm hungry."
A simple "I'm hungry" is more effective than anything else.
Lin Wanrou wiped her face, then vigorously rubbed her withered hands on her clothes before daring to touch the bag of precious flour.
Scoop out the flour and add water.
Lin Wanrou is actually a very good cook, but over the years in the Meng family, even the most skilled cook can't cook without ingredients. Now that she has top-quality ingredients, she puts in her utmost care, even for something as simple as dumpling soup.
The water has boiled.
Meng Yaya deftly pried open the luncheon meat can with a Swiss Army knife.
A rich and overpowering aroma of meat instantly filled the small room.
Lin Wanrou involuntarily swallowed as she smelled the aroma. It was meat! She had forgotten when she last ate meat; it seemed to be the New Year when she was newly married and received a piece of fat the size of a fingernail.
"Put them all in," Meng Yaya instructed.
"Give it all? This is such a big piece..." Lin Wanrou's hand trembled slightly. "How about I leave half for you to eat next time?"
"Put it all in." Meng Yaya's tone left no room for argument, and she casually tossed in the chopped tomato pieces as well.
The red tomato juice blended into the boiling soup, the sweet and sour aroma mingling with the meaty fragrance, making one's soul almost fly away. Lin Wanrou drooled as she quickly stirred the batter, using chopsticks to shape it into even little fish-like pieces, which she then dropped into the boiling soup.
Finally, beat two eggs and pour them in. The egg flowers float to the top, a beautiful mix of golden yellow, bright red, and snow white, creating a stunning dish.
The aroma is too strong.
Even with the doors and windows tightly closed, the overpowering fragrance still managed to seep out through the cracks.
Meng Yaya sniffed and nodded in satisfaction. This was food fit for human consumption.
Two steaming bowls of dumpling soup were placed on the kang table.
The chipped, rough porcelain bowl was brimming with ingredients.
The luncheon meat was cut into large cubes, soaked up the broth, and looked soft, chewy, and savory. The noodles were translucent, coated in a thick soup.
Lin Wanrou pushed one of the bowls, which was all meat, in front of Meng Yaya, and picked up another bowl, which had more soup than meat, for herself.
"Mom, let's change." Meng Yaya frowned, pushed her own bowl over, and snatched Lin Wanrou's bowl away.
"Ya Ya, you're at the stage where you're growing..."
"I have strength, you don't." Meng Yaya scooped up a large spoonful and put it in her mouth.
The scalding hot broth slid down my esophagus, soothing my already parched stomach. The sweet and sour flavor was appetizing, the noodles were chewy, and the luncheon meat was savory and delicious.
Came alive.
This is what it feels like to be alive.
Watching her daughter eat so heartily, Lin Wanrou couldn't hold back her tears again. She lowered her head and carefully took a sip of soup.
fresh!
It's so delicious it'll make your tongue fall off.
After taking a sip of hot soup, Lin Wanrou felt as if her withered heart had warmed up.
She stopped refusing and started eating heartily.
This was the best meal she had ever eaten in her life. There were no curses from Wang Guifen, no fists from Meng Jingui, only the sound of her daughter slurping her soup beside her.
After finishing a large bowl of dumpling soup, both mother and daughter broke out in a light sweat.
Meng Yaya's little face was rosy, and the deathly pallor she had shown earlier had dissipated considerably. Lin Wanrou's face also regained color, and a glimmer of light finally appeared in her previously cloudy and dull eyes.
That is hope.
"Mom, are you full?" Meng Yaya put down her bowl and let out a burp.
"I'm full, too full." Lin Wanrou stroked her daughter's head, her expression complicated.
What if we eat this heavenly meal and then there's no more food to eat in the future?
"Now that we're full, it's time to get back to work." Meng Yaya jumped down and stretched her arms and legs.
The energy from the meal is being rapidly converted in my body. Although I haven't recovered to even one percent of my peak post-apocalyptic state, I'm already much stronger than I was when I was on the verge of dying.
The supernatural core in the space rotated slightly, and a warm current flowed through his entire body.
Lin Wanrou was about to clear the dishes when she suddenly stopped.
She looked toward the doorway in horror.
A series of hurried footsteps came from the yard, along with the excited barking of the large wolfhound.
"What's that smell? It smells so good!"
A sharp, sarcastic voice boomed in the courtyard. It was Aunt Zhang Cuihua's voice, like a fly drawn to the smell of fish, "Well, those two jinxes really did steal food! I knew that brat had no strength; he was eating alone behind our backs!"
"Mother! Come quick! They've started cooking meat!"
Then came Wang Guifen's raspy voice, filled with the shame and indignation of having her pants pulled down and a greedy lust for food: "This is outrageous! They're using my life savings to buy meat! I'll tear those two spendthrift women's mouths apart!"
The old wooden door was pounded on, making a loud "bang" sound, and dust fell from the door frame.
Lin Wanrou's chopsticks fell to the table with a "clatter," and her face turned deathly pale instantly.
The deep-seated fear made her instinctively want to curl up into a ball.
Meng Yaya smiled.
She walked to the door, picked up the wooden stick used to prop it open, and weighed it in her hand.
The portion size is just right.
"Mom, don't be afraid."
Meng Yaya turned around, her clear black and white eyes showing no sign of panic, but rather a hint of eager excitement.
"Time for post-meal exercise."
