Chapter 39 A brat provoking me? I think you want to fly!
The flame of the kerosene lamp flickered twice, casting a long shadow of Gu Changfeng on the wall.
On the table sat a plate of braised pheasant, a pot of stewed cabbage with vermicelli, and steaming white steamed buns.
Lin Wanrou was a little reserved, hesitant to pick up any meat with her chopsticks. Gu Changfeng glanced at her, then picked up the plate and shoved most of the chicken into Lin Wanrou and Meng Yaya's bowls.
"Eat." Gu Changfeng took a bite of the steamed bun. "Here, there's no room for politeness."
Meng Yaya sat in a specially raised chair, her little hands clutching a chicken leg bigger than her face, gnawing on it with grease dripping from her mouth. With her mouth stuffed full, she asked, her words muffled, "Dad, who lives next door?"
"It's Wang Dapao's house, the commander of the First Regiment." Gu Changfeng put the deboned meat into her bowl. "What's wrong? Did someone bully you this afternoon?"
"No." Meng Yaya spat the bone onto the table, her eyes crinkling. "I just think his grandson has a really loud voice, he'd be good at practicing Lion's Roar."
Gu Changfeng paused for a moment, recalling the howling he had heard when he entered the room, and his lips twitched almost imperceptibly.
He looked at his daughter's innocent big eyes, then at her arms as thin as reeds, and lowered his head to take a sip of soup.
Yeah, that kid must have fallen on his own. His daughter is so delicate, what bad intentions could she possibly have?
After dinner, Gu Changfeng went to wash the dishes. These days, it's rare to see a man in the kitchen, but for Gu Changfeng, as long as Lin Wanrou's hands have calluses and chilblains that haven't healed, this job is his.
Silent all night.
The next morning, the sound of a bugle call broke the tranquility of the courtyard. Gu Changfeng had left early, leaving three boiled eggs and some warmed millet porridge in the pot.
Meng Yaya got up, and Lin Wanrou was turning over the soil in the yard. Yesterday, Gu Changfeng only removed the weeds; if they wanted to plant vegetables, the soil needed to be loosened thoroughly.
"Mom, take a break." Meng Yaya squatted in the corner where she found the footprints last night, holding a small shovel in her hand and pretending to dig in the soil, but in reality she was using her consciousness to sort out the mutated seeds in the space.
"It's alright, Mom can't stay idle." Lin Wanrou wiped her sweat, and her face regained some color.
Just then, a rustling sound came from outside the courtyard wall. Immediately afterwards, several mud balls flew in with a whoosh, hitting the freshly turned ground with a few "thuds," one of which almost splashed onto Lin Wanrou's clean trouser leg.
"Hit! Hit!"
A burst of laughter came from outside the wall.
Meng Yaya threw down the shovel and stood up. Her clear, black and white eyes held no trace of the innocence of a three-year-old; they were filled with coldness.
It seems I didn't hit the target hard enough last night.
"Whose child is so naughty!" Lin Wanrou was startled and shouted angrily towards the outside of the wall.
"Hehehe! Beggars fleeing famine! Beggars!"
Several heads suddenly popped up on the wall. The one leading them was none other than Wang Hu, the chubby kid from yesterday. He still had a white bandage on his forehead, which looked quite comical, but his arrogance hadn't diminished at all.
Wang Hu, perched atop the wall, clutching a large lump of mud in his hand, pointed at Meng Yaya: "This is the brat! She hit me yesterday! Brothers, smash her! Drive them out of the compound!"
Behind him followed five or six boys, all notorious troublemakers in the compound, each clutching mud and pebbles in their hands.
"Stop!" Lin Wanrou cried out anxiously, trying to rush over to protect her daughter.
Meng Yaya reached out and stopped her mother, her small body standing straight, and said in her childish voice, "Mom, step back. Don't get all mud on you, it'll be hard to wash off."
Lin Wanrou was taken aback: "Ya Ya?"
Meng Yaya walked to the base of the wall and looked up at the chubby little boy sitting on the top of the wall.
"Your name is Wang Hu?"
"It's your grandpa Tiger!" Wang Hu looked down at him smugly. "Scared? If you're scared, kneel down and kowtow three times to me before you crawl out of here!"
As he spoke, he forcefully threw the mud ball at Meng Yaya's face.
Meng Yaya didn't even turn her head, just raised her hand and waved.
"Snapped!"
The mud ball was precisely slapped away in mid-air by that little hand, bounced back, and landed right on the face of a skinny monkey next to it.
"Ouch! Tiger, why did you hit me!" Skinny Monkey cried out, covering his eyes.
Wang Hu was stunned. This brat reacted so quickly?
Before he could even react, Meng Yaya had already reached the wall. The wall was 1.5 meters high, which would be an insurmountable barrier for a three-year-old, but for Meng Yaya, it was just a slightly higher threshold.
She touched the crack in the wall with her toes, used the momentum to push off, and her small body, like a nimble raccoon, instantly leaped onto the top of the wall.
This impressive display of light-footed skill completely stunned the group of mischievous kids.
Wang Hu only felt a blur before his eyes, and then his collar was grabbed.
"Kowtowing?" Meng Yaya's delicate, porcelain-like face drew closer to Wang Hu, revealing a few tiny teeth as she smiled sinisterly. "I also think this suggestion is good."
"What...what are you doing! Let go! My dad is the regimental commander!" Wang Hu finally realized something was wrong. This girl's grip was ridiculously strong, like an iron clamp was stuck on his neck.
"What's wrong with the commander? Even if you're the King of Heaven, you'd better come down here today!"
Meng Yaya grabbed Wang Hu's collar with one hand and fastened his belt with the other, gathering her strength in her dantian, and shouted, "Rise!"
The next second, a scene that made all the children question the meaning of life unfolded.
The chubby little boy, Wang Hu, weighing over 100 pounds, was pulled off the wall by that little girl who looked like she hadn't been weaned yet, just like a straw!
"Ah—! Let me go! I'm going to fall to my death!" Wang Hu's feet were off the ground, kicking wildly in mid-air, his nose and eyes filled with snot and tears.
The group of kids below all gaped, their jaws nearly dropping to their feet. That was Wang Hu! The bully of the compound! He'd just been lifted up like that?
Meng Yaya stood on the wall, lifting Wang Hu above her head like a trophy.
"Yesterday you stepped on my land, today you threw mud at my house."
Meng Yaya's voice wasn't loud, but it carried a chilling aura that sent shivers down one's spine.
"People say that once is enough, twice is too much, but three times is not enough. Since your parents won't teach you how to be a person, then I'll teach you for them."
"No! Sister! Grandma! I was wrong!" Wang Hu looked at the hard ground below, his face turning pale with fright.
"It's too late."
With a flick of her wrist, Meng Yaya hung Wang Hu on the old locust tree in the yard like a rag bag.
With a "crack," Wang Hu's collar got caught on a thick tree branch, leaving him dangling half a meter in the air, his limbs flailing wildly, but he couldn't get down no matter what he did.
"Who else?" Meng Yaya dusted off her hands, stood on the wall, and looked down at the remaining children outside.
Those brats who were just yelling about smashing things were now cowering, looking at each other, none of them daring to utter a sound. This wasn't some new pushover; she was clearly a female demon!
"From now on, this area within a ten-meter radius of courtyard number six is my territory," Meng Yaya said, swinging her short legs. "If anyone dares to throw a clod of mud in here again, I'll hang them on top of a tree and steal their bird nests. You hear me?"
"I...I heard it!" The children were so frightened that they turned and ran away, wishing their parents had two more legs.
In the yard, the shovel in Lin Wanrou's hand fell to the ground with a "clatter".
She looked at Wang Hu, who was hanging from the tree and howling like a pig being slaughtered, and then at her daughter, who was calmly jumping down from the wall. She was a little confused.
"Ya Ya...is...is the child alright?"
"She won't die, the collar is just a little tight, she won't strangle him." Meng Yaya walked over, picked up the shovel, and squatted back down in the field. "Mom, open our front door wide."
"Huh? What?"
"Someone's coming to deliver a gift soon, it's inconvenient to keep the door closed." Meng Yaya dug a hole, buried a modified tomato seed in it, and a playful smile appeared on her lips. "Now that the little one's been dealt with, the old one's coming."
No sooner had the words left his mouth than a series of hurried, heavy footsteps echoed from the other end of the courtyard, accompanied by a gruff, booming voice: "Who? Which brat dares to lay a finger on my child? They've gone too far!"
Lin Wanrou's face turned pale.
Meng Yaya calmly dusted herself off, stood up, and straightened her skirt.
"Don't be afraid, Mom. This is self-defense." She pointed to Wang Hu hanging in the tree. "The physical evidence is all here."
