Chapter 385 The Chief of Staff Arrives
The Jeep's engine was still sputtering.
Gu Changfeng sat in the driver's seat, one hand on the steering wheel, white smoke billowing from the large front door between his fingers. He didn't get out of the car; his upper body was shrouded in shadow, his crisp military shirt stretching his shoulders to an extreme degree.
Section Chief Zhou's hand, holding the glue bottle, froze in mid-air. He stared at the license plate, his heart skipping a beat.
That Bao Shun, oblivious to the danger, was still jumping around, saying, "Section Chief Zhou, what are you standing there for? Put a ticket on it! This car is parked haphazardly; we'll have the guys from the station tow it away in a bit!"
"Shut the hell up!" Section Chief Zhou shouted in a shrill voice, turning around and making the flesh on his face tremble.
Gu Changfeng turned his head, his angular face looking as if it had been carved by a knife in the setting sun. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a dark red plastic notebook. With a flick of his finger, the notebook slid steadily out of the car window and hung in mid-air.
"If you're going to do something, see if this guy is qualified." Gu Changfeng's voice was calm, revealing neither his emotions.
Section Chief Zhou's legs were already trembling. He took two steps forward, his palms sweating, and carefully took the notebook. When he opened the first page, the officer's ID card with Gu Changfeng's photo and the bright red seal of the Beijing Garrison Command made his eyes blur.
"The Chief of Staff of the Beijing Garrison Command, Gu... Gu Changfeng."
When Section Chief Zhou read those words, his voice trembled. He, a mere section chief in the industrial and commercial bureau, could act with impunity in the Wangfujing area because he usually dealt with business people. But when it came to high-ranking officials like this, he wasn't even worthy of carrying their shoes.
What is the Beijing Garrison Command for? It is responsible for protecting the safety of the entire capital city; its power is boundless.
Section Chief Zhou's hand trembled, and his military officer's ID card almost fell to the ground. He quickly held it up with both hands, as if it were an ancestral tablet.
"Commander Gu... this is a misunderstanding." In half a second, Section Chief Zhou's face went from ashen to deathly pale, and then from deathly pale to purplish-red.
Na Baoshun was stunned. Chief of Staff? This woman from out of town, her husband is actually the Chief of Staff? His legs went weak, and he plopped down in the still wet mud.
Ya Ya shifted her sitting position, swinging her legs leisurely in the air: "Uncle Blue Skin, didn't you just say you were going to put my dad in jail?"
Section Chief Zhou was sweating profusely, his collar soaked with cold sweat. He turned around and delivered a resounding slap to Bao Shun's face.
"You bastard surnamed Na! You troublemaker!" Section Chief Zhou roared hysterically, "Didn't you say this family were migrant workers who had wandered back from out of town? You dare to frame a military family member? I'll beat you to death today!"
Bao Shun was so badly beaten that he saw stars and covered his face, not daring to utter a sound.
Gu Changfeng took a drag of his cigarette, exhaling the smoke out of the car window. He reached back at the documents from Section Chief Zhou's hand, his movements slow and deliberate: "I've looked at the documents. Now it's time to get on with your work. This seal is affixed quite neatly."
"No, no, no, sir, this seal is... it's because the glue is of poor quality, it stuck on by itself!" Section Chief Zhou had lost all his official demeanor at this moment. He dropped his briefcase and rushed to the wooden pillar.
Because the paste had just been applied, the seal was stuck on tightly. Section Chief Zhou ignored the splinters digging into his fingernails and tried to pry them off.
"It's not clean enough." Gu Changfeng stubbed out the cigarette butt in the ashtray.
Section Chief Zhou immediately understood. He glanced at the newly painted doorposts, then at the murderous figure inside the jeep. He steeled himself, knelt down on the steps with a thud, and vigorously rubbed the white paper strip with his hands.
"I'll tear it! I'll tear it clean right now!"
The section chief, who had been swaggering just moments before, was now kneeling on the ground, desperately trying to remove the seal from the wooden pillar with his fingernails and teeth. His movements resembled those of a dog gnawing on a bone.
The neighbors stared in disbelief. The head of the local industry and commerce bureau, who had been so aggressive just moments before, was now kneeling at their doorstep.
"Serves him right!" an old man spat. "This Zhou fellow has been taking plenty of cigarettes and alcohol from Baoshun, and this time he's finally met his match."
Lin Wanrou stood on the steps, her hands in the pockets of her Lenin suit. She didn't speak, only watched Section Chief Zhou bustling about on the ground. At that moment, the pent-up resentment that had been suppressed in her heart for many years seemed to be blown away clean by the cold wind.
Niu Dan, holding a bamboo broom, stood at the door, staring at the few thugs who were trying to slip away.
"Where do you want to go?" Niu Dan's voice was icy.
Several thugs, their legs cramping, stood in a row, too afraid to move.
Section Chief Zhou finally wiped the pillar clean, his clothes covered in white powder. He turned around, kneeling with his knees still, looking up at Gu Changfeng in the jeep.
"Sir...look, it's all cleaned up. Today's matter...I was blind and misled by a villain." As Section Chief Zhou spoke, he raised his hand and slapped himself hard across the face.
Gu Changfeng pushed open the car door and stepped out. His black leather boots made a steady sound as they hit the ground. He walked up to Na Baoshun.
Na Baoshun huddled in the mud, trembling like a leaf: "Commander Gu... my great-grandfather was really a prince back then, this house..."
"You're a prince, right?" Gu Changfeng looked down at him. "This house was sold to us by the housing management office. If you have any objections, you can appeal to the military region's security department, or I can have someone take you to the headquarters?"
"No, no, no! No objection! Not an inch!" Bao Shun was terrified. "This house is meant for heroes like you! I'm nothing, just let me go!"
Gu Changfeng ignored him and turned to look at Section Chief Zhou.
"Zhou Quan," Gu Changfeng read out the name on the name tag hanging on his chest.
"Yes, sir, please give your orders." Section Chief Zhou knelt on the ground.
"I see you're quite knowledgeable about fire safety and business inspections." Gu Changfeng pulled his military cap down a bit. "Since you're so keen on inspections, why don't you report to my unit tomorrow? I'll let you inspect the garrison's barracks too, how about that?"
Upon hearing this, Section Chief Zhou felt a wave of dizziness. Sending him to investigate the garrison? That was sending him to his death! This blatant warning meant his good days were over.
"Fall back." Gu Changfeng waved his hand.
The thugs, as if granted a pardon, dragged Bao Shun along, abandoning even the cart, and scrambled away, disappearing into the alley at the end of the alley.
Section Chief Zhou stood up shakily, picked up his briefcase, bent over at a ninety-degree angle, and shuffled backward step by step. Only after he had retreated to the main gate did he take off running.
The courtyard returned to tranquility.
The bricklayers and carpenters looked at Gu Changfeng with a different kind of respect; it was now genuine awe. Foreman Zhang walked over, wanting to greet him, but then felt the disparity in their social status.
"Old Zhang, just do it according to the original plan, don't worry." Lin Wanrou walked over and gave Old Zhang a reassuring look.
Gu Changfeng walked up to his wife and daughter, his cold expression instantly melting away. He reached out and picked up Ya Ya, kissing her rosy cheeks.
"Dad, Uncle Blue just said he was going to confiscate our wood," Ya Ya complained, hugging Gu Changfeng's neck.
"He doesn't have that chance anymore." Gu Changfeng carried Ya Ya into the house, and as he passed Lin Wanrou, he said softly, "You've been frightened."
"With you here, I'm not afraid," Lin Wanrou replied, closing the courtyard gate behind her.
That evening, construction on the medicinal cuisine restaurant continued.
Gu Changfeng went into the inner room, not in a hurry to change his clothes. He pulled out a mahogany table in the hall and sat down, taking out a notebook from his pocket. It contained some unusual details about Section Chief Zhou's team earlier.
"Niu Dan, come here." Gu Changfeng beckoned.
Niu Dan walked over quickly.
"Tomorrow morning, go and keep watch in the alley behind the Wangfujing Industrial and Commercial Bureau. See who Zhou Quan contacts after get off work. Don't do anything, and write down the address," Gu Changfeng instructed.
Ya Ya was sitting next to me chewing on dried meat. Hearing this, her big eyes darted around: "Dad, are you going to raid his hideout?"
Gu Changfeng reached out and ruffled Ya Ya's little braids.
"This kind of sleazy bastard, once he's started, he can't just back down. He's been helping Bao Shun extort money in this area, he must have amassed quite a bit of 'retirement money'."
Gu Changfeng stood up and walked to the window.
The moon is very round tonight, shining brightly on the house I just bought.
Gu Changfeng looked at the empty backyard. He could easily crush a nobody like Section Chief Zhou with a flick of his finger.
But what he was thinking was that the waters in the capital were much deeper than the desert, and before the medicinal cuisine restaurant even opened, all sorts of monsters and demons were already getting restless.
