Dare to shirk responsibility? This adorable little one will tear down your military district!
Chapter 27 This kid is easy to get along with; if something happens, he really will send the driver.
"I don't have any money," the little boy said, folding his dirty handkerchief and putting it in his pocket. "But my dad does."
Meng Yaya sat cross-legged on the hard seat, clutching a White Rabbit milk candy she had snatched from the little boy's pocket.
"Oh," Meng Yaya mumbled in response. "Then where's your dad? Do I have to pay for your own travel expenses to take you home?"
The little boy choked for a moment, a hint of helplessness flashing across his tense little face: "No need. Someone will come to pick me up when we get to the station."
Just then, the train conductor's excited voice came over the loudspeaker: "We've arrived at Beiping Station! We've arrived at Beiping Station! We've arrived at the city where our great leader is!"
The crowd in the carriage instantly erupted in excitement, with everyone carrying large bags and packages and squeezing towards the doors, afraid that if they were even a moment too late, they would be turned away from the city.
Lin Wanrou protected Ya Ya, warily looking around. The old train police officer originally wanted to keep them to make a statement, but looking at the chaotic crowd and the obviously unusual little boy, he waved his hand, signaling them to leave quickly.
Since the human traffickers have already been caught, and the mother and daughter are also victims, there's no need to keep them detained.
As soon as I got off the train, the cool morning breeze, mixed with the smell of coal smoke, hit me.
The platform was packed with people, but strangely, there was a vacuum in one area.
A dark green jeep drove straight onto the platform and stopped not far away. Two young soldiers in military uniforms, standing ramrod straight, stood beside the vehicle, anxiously looking through the crowd.
"here."
The little boy stood at the door of the carriage and waved.
The two soldiers locked onto their target instantly, like radar, and rushed over with great strides, their presence frightening the surrounding passengers into giving way.
"Young master! We've finally found you! The commander was about to send out the guard company to overturn the railway!" The leading soldier was a square-faced man. Seeing that the little boy was alright, his eyes reddened, and he reached out to hug him.
The little boy took a step back, avoiding the soldier's hand, and pointed to Lin Wanrou and Meng Yaya behind him.
"I was kidnapped, and they rescued me," the little boy said succinctly. "They gave them a ride."
The square-faced warrior paused for a moment, his gaze falling on the two figures, one large and one small.
The woman wore an old cotton-padded coat covered in patches, her hair was a little messy, and she carried a tattered basket on her back. The little one was even more outrageous, with bulging cheeks chewing on candy, his big eyes darting around in the jeep.
This group looks like refugees fleeing famine.
"Young Master, the Commander is in a hurry to see you..." The square-faced soldier said somewhat awkwardly.
"I won't say it a second time." The little boy's voice wasn't loud, but he had the air of authority about him completely under control. "Either take them with you, or I'll walk back myself."
The square-faced soldier was startled and quickly saluted, "Yes, sir! I'll obey your orders!"
He turned his head and immediately became respectful towards Lin Wanrou. Although his eyes still held a hint of scrutiny towards country folk, his tone was much more polite: "Sister-in-law, please get in the car."
Lin Wanrou had never seen anything like this before. Those were jeeps! In the village, she had barely even ridden a tractor.
She nervously clutched the hem of her clothes, saying, "This...this isn't appropriate, is it? We're dirty..."
"Mom, get in the car." Meng Yaya swallowed the last bit of candy, jumped out of the car, and climbed directly into the back seat of the jeep.
She kicked her short legs twice, not caring whether her shoes were muddy, and plopped down on the leather seat. She patted the seat next to her and said, "It's soft, much better than the earthen bed at home."
In the apocalypse, this kind of car is just a consumable item used to run over zombies; she doesn't have the mentality of people in this era who treat cars like royalty.
Seeing that her daughter had already gone up, Lin Wanrou had no choice but to bite the bullet and follow, shrinking into a corner, afraid of breaking any parts.
With a roar, the jeep sped out of the train station.
Lin Wanrou watched the whole way without blinking. Wide roads, rows of red brick buildings, workers riding bicycles, and huge billboards along the roadside.
This is Beiping.
This is where Changhe stays.
"Where to?" the little boy asked, turning around from the passenger seat.
"Go...go to the military compound." Lin Wanrou quickly pulled out a crumpled piece of paper from her pocket. It was an address she had written down from memory. "I'm looking for the father of my child."
The square-faced soldier driving the jeep trembled slightly.
"The military compound?" The square-faced soldier glanced at the shabby mother and daughter in the rearview mirror. "Sister-in-law, that's not a place you can just walk into. Which department does your husband work in? What's his name?"
"His name is Meng Changhe." Lin Wanrou's eyes lit up. "He was also a soldier, and he's been gone for three years."
The square-faced soldier frowned and thought for a long time before shaking his head: "Never heard of it. The military region is so big, with tens of thousands of people, they have all sorts of names. But since you have an address, I'll take you to the gate."
Meng Yaya keenly grasped the meaning behind the soldier's words.
never heard of that?
The original owner's father wasn't an ordinary soldier; logically, if he had done well, his bodyguard should have at least some recollection of him. Unless he changed his name, or was on a mission where even his name couldn't be mentioned.
Or perhaps, he's just a lowly soldier who hasn't yet made it big?
That shouldn't be the case; that scumbag father sends back quite a lot of allowance every month.
"Thanks." Meng Yaya suddenly spoke, interrupting the soldier's thoughts. "It doesn't matter where he is, as long as he's in that courtyard."
After driving for about forty minutes, the surrounding scenery became increasingly quiet, and there were fewer pedestrians on the road, replaced by patrol teams that came to patrol from time to time.
Finally, the jeep stopped a hundred meters away from an imposing gate.
The gate was three stories high, with bright red characters written on the pillars on both sides, and armed sentries stood at the entrance like two guardian deities.
"This is a military restricted area. Local vehicles are not allowed to approach freely. I can only take you this far." The square-faced soldier parked the car.
Lin Wanrou thanked Ya Ya profusely and got out of the car.
The little boy rolled down the car window, took out a bunch of colorful tickets and a folded piece of paper, and stuffed them into Meng Yaya's hand.
"This is the home phone number, and some food coupons." The little boy looked at Meng Yaya. "If you can't find anyone, or if you run into trouble, call this number to find me. My name is Jiang Guo."
So that's what it's called, berry? Meng Yaya thought to herself, but the name sounded delicious.
She unceremoniously stuffed the items into her pocket: "Fine, at least you have a conscience. This deal isn't a loss."
Jiang Guo's lips twitched. Why does this girl always talk about business?
"I'm gone."
The jeep billowed black smoke, turned a corner, and drove towards another compound. Clearly, while the young master's residence was in the same area as their destination, it was likely of a higher status.
The dust settled.
Lin Wanrou straightened her collar, patted the dust off Ya Ya's pants, took a deep breath, and took her daughter's hand.
"Ya Ya, we've arrived."
