Chapter 25 They're being given a hard time; they insist on provoking the powerful.
Although Lin Wanrou had never traveled far from home, she instinctively sensed danger.
She hugged Ya Ya tighter and shrank closer to the car window: "The child's father is a soldier in Beiping. We have relatives there to pick us up."
She brought up Meng Changhe, hoping to use his identity to suppress the other party's evil intentions.
"Oh, a military dependent," the auntie said, but her greedy nature only intensified.
Military dependents are lucky; their families must be wealthy. This little girl is so fair-skinned; if she were sold to a child bride in a remote mountain village to a family without any descendants, she would be top-tier.
The woman pulled a slightly blackened pear from her pocket, wiped it on her sleeve, and said, "Here, on this hot day, give the child a drink to quench their thirst. It came from our own tree, it's sweet."
There was a noticeable fingernail mark on the pear skin.
Just as Lin Wanrou was about to refuse, Meng Yaya buried her head in her mother's arms and said, "I won't eat it, it stinks."
The woman's hand froze in mid-air, and her face darkened.
"How can this child talk like that?" The woman stuffed the pear back into her pocket, her tone turning sharp. "You've taken my kindness for granted. I only did this because I felt sorry for you, a widow and her orphan."
Just then, a man squeezed through the aisle.
The man, dressed in greasy blue overalls and with a stubble beard, was carrying a snakeskin bag. As he passed the woman, he stumbled, his body swaying, and he bumped into her shoulder.
"Don't you have eyes?!" the aunt cursed.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry." The man smiled apologetically, but his gaze lingered on the aunt's face for a second before quickly sweeping over Meng Yaya's face.
Their eyes met briefly in mid-air, faster than striking a match.
Meng Yaya could see clearly that it was a signal to take action.
The man hadn't gone far; he leaned against the seat diagonally behind him and threw the snakeskin bag on the ground, blocking the mother and daughter's only escape route.
As darkness fell, the scenery outside the train window became blurry black shadows. The lights inside the carriage flickered dimly, turning on and off with the train's jolts.
The man in the Zhongshan suit next to him, who had been reading the newspaper, folded it up, closed his eyes, and pretended to doze off, as if everything outside of him was irrelevant.
The woman stopped talking, but her leg kept shaking rapidly.
"Mom, I need to pee," Meng Yaya suddenly said.
Lin Wanrou breathed a sigh of relief, taking the opportunity to leave her seat. Just as she stood up, the older woman sprang up like a spring and plopped down on the side of the aisle, completely blocking her way.
"The toilets are far from here, and they're packed with people right now," the woman said with a forced smile. "Just relieve yourself here, grab a bottle and use it."
"Move aside." Lin Wanrou's voice was a little tense.
"Hey, why are you listening to nonsense, young lady?" The auntie not only didn't give way, but instead reached out a hand, seemingly to help Lin Wanrou, but actually grabbed Lin Wanrou's wrist, "The car is shaking badly, don't fall."
Just then, the train let out a long whistle and plunged into the long tunnel.
The lights in the carriage flickered twice and then went out.
The moment darkness descended, the hand gripping Lin Wanrou's wrist suddenly unleashed a tremendous force, pulling her downwards with a sharp jerk.
"Do it!" The woman's voice sounded particularly menacing in the darkness.
The man in blue overalls rushed over from diagonally behind like a wild boar.
Lin Wanrou felt a strong force strike her, causing her to lose her balance and fall into the aunt's arms. In the chaos, a pair of rough, large hands reached out precisely to Meng Yaya in her arms.
"Ah—!" Lin Wanrou screamed, "Help! Someone's trying to steal my child!"
In the darkness, a large, cigarette-smelling hand covered Meng Yaya's mouth, while the other hand grabbed her collar, trying to pry her out of Lin Wanrou's arms.
Meng Yaya did not call out.
The moment that large hand covered her lips, she opened her mouth, revealing a set of fine, white baby teeth, and bit down hard on the man's tiger's mouth.
"Aww!"
A scream drowned out the roar of the train.
The man winced in pain and loosened his grip. Meng Yaya seized the opportunity to break free and grabbed Lin Wanrou's clothes.
The lights came on.
The train rushed out of the tunnel.
Chaos erupted in the carriage. Passengers stood up, looking on in surprise and disbelief.
The man in blue overalls clutched his bleeding hand, his face contorted with rage. The older woman, meanwhile, gripped Lin Wanrou's hair tightly, slamming her head against the back of the chair.
"Everyone, please be the judge!" The woman suddenly changed her expression, wailing at the top of her lungs, tears streaming down her face. "This crazy woman is stealing my granddaughter! She's my own granddaughter!"
Lin Wanrou's hair was pulled out of shape, and tears welled up in her eyes from the pain. Hearing this, she was completely stunned: "You're lying! This is my daughter!"
"Look, everyone!" The aunt pointed at Meng Yaya, spitting as she spoke. "This child's new cotton-padded jacket was made from cloth I bought with my retirement savings! This crazy woman is a child trafficker; she tried to snatch the child while I was sleeping! Luckily, my nephew saw her!"
The man in the blue overalls immediately chimed in, holding up his bleeding hand: "Yes! It's her! I tried to stop her, and this little bastard bit me! Look, everyone, my hand is all bitten raw!"
Passengers around, unaware of the situation, began to point and whisper.
"They look so respectable, how could they do such a despicable thing?"
"Exactly, there are so many kidnappers these days, they specialize in stealing children."
"Arrest her! Hand her over to the train police!"
Public opinion instantly swayed in their favor. In this day and age, human traffickers are like rats in the street, deserving of everyone's wrath. The auntie's tactic of "the thief crying 'stop thief'" was masterful.
Lin Wanrou trembled with anxiety. She wanted to explain, but she was tongue-tied, and with the aunt pressing her head down, she couldn't utter a complete sentence: "No...she is...Ya Ya is mine..."
"You bastard!" The aunt slapped Lin Wanrou across the face, the crisp sound making everyone around shrink back. "Still dare to talk back! Nephew, bring the child over! We're going to find the train conductor to settle this!"
The man in blue overalls grinned maliciously and reached out to grab Meng Yaya again.
This time, he was truly intent on killing. His intact hand, like an eagle's claw, went straight for Meng Yaya's throat. If he could control the younger one, the older one, even with a mouth full of teeth, wouldn't be able to explain himself.
The man in the Zhongshan suit who had been resting with his eyes closed frowned slightly, as if he wanted to move.
But he didn't have time.
Meng Yaya stood on her seat. Her clear, bright eyes showed no trace of the fear one would expect from a three-year-old.
She watched the man getting closer and closer, then glanced at her mother, who was being slapped while being forced into a seat by the older woman.
"You're asking for it."
The childish voice was drowned out by the noise of the crowd, and only the middle-aged woman standing closest to it heard it. She paused for a moment, and a sudden, inexplicable chill ran through her.
Meng Yaya pulled her little hand out of her handbag.
She held a rusty piece of rebar, only the length of a chopstick, in her hand.
She picked it up casually in the village and hadn't had time to throw it away yet. Little did she know it would become her "passport" on this train.
The man in the blue overalls had already touched her collar.
"You little bastard, come with grandpa!"
Meng Yaya did not dodge.
She raised the inconspicuous rebar in her hand and, with all her might—a strange strength beyond her years—slammed it down hard on the man's outstretched forearm.
"Click."
The sound was crisp, like a dry twig snapping underfoot. But in the crowded carriage, it was so clear it made your teeth ache.
The man's arm was bent at an unsightly ninety-degree angle. White bone fragments pierced through his blue overalls, and blood spurted out instantly.
"ah--!!!"
This scream was more than ten times more piercing than the one before.
The man clutched his severed arm, the pain causing him to kneel in the corridor. His face turned deathly pale, and cold sweat poured down his face like a waterfall.
The entire carriage was deathly silent.
Everyone stared wide-eyed at the little girl standing on the seat.
She held the still-dripping steel bar in her hand, tilted her head, and looked at the terrified woman.
"You just said you made these clothes?"
Meng Yaya took a step forward and stepped directly onto the moving sack.
The sack beneath my feet twitched violently.
The older woman released her grip on Lin Wanrou's hair, her body involuntarily shrinking back until her back pressed against the cold, hard carriage wall. She looked at Meng Yaya as if she were looking at a little devil crawling out of hell.
"If you dare touch my mom again," Meng Yaya said, raising the steel bar in her hand and pointing it at the woman's forehead, "I'll stick this thing into your brain."
