Who moved her body?

Chapter 49 Let's have some skewers and drinks

At 5:30 p.m., bored out of his mind, Xu Haiyang set up a barbecue grill and started barbecuing in the front yard.

Guan Jie quickly set up the table and chairs, and Mu Gua prepared the bowls, chopsticks and beer, just waiting for Xu Haiyang's barbecue.

"Today I'll show you what master-level barbecue is all about," Xu Haiyang said.

Xu Haiyang laid out the lamb skewers prepared for him in the kitchen on the grill. He pinched a pinch of seasoning with his right thumb, index, and middle fingers and sprinkled it onto the skewers like a fairy scattering flowers. The charcoal fire seemed to smell the aroma, immediately leaping up, catching the fragrant seasoning, devouring it in mid-air, and then reluctantly falling back onto the charcoal with a hint of greed.

A wisp of smoke rose up, and Papaya took a few deep sniffs.

"It smells so good, boss."

"Of course. Back in America, I used my amazing barbecue skills to win over the girl I loved. What's that saying again? Something about how to keep someone tied down..."

"The way to a person's heart is through their stomach," Papaya added.

"Yes, yes, that's it. Sigh, unfortunately, the girl I like ran off with another guy after eating my barbecue. Later I realized that love has nothing to do with the heart or the stomach."

"Boss, you have money and skills, and she still ran off with someone else. What does that woman want?"

Xu Haiyang picked up the oysters one by one and placed them on the shelf, saying, "What they care about is their reputation!"

Guan Jie rubbed oil onto the chicken leg, lowering his head to suppress a laugh.

Papaya nodded thoughtfully, "Saving face! Women do care about their face, otherwise there wouldn't be so many gigolos in society."

"Pretty boy, pretty boy, oh oh, I want to be a pretty boy, oh oh, eat and drink well, oh oh, drive luxury cars and live in villas, oh oh oh, no need to buy a house or a car..." Xu Haiyang composed and sang, twisting his body behind the grill, treating the place as if it were a stage.

As the aroma of meat wafted through the air, Xu Haiyang gathered dozens of bamboo skewers together with both hands. He then spread the skewers out like turning the pages of a book, revealing the bright orange-yellow side of the meat skewers neatly upside down.

Cumin was sprinkled, and oil dripped down, making a sizzling sound.

"It smells delicious!" Guan Jie exclaimed.

A splash of red came through the porch, and a pair of wooden clogs clattered on slender feet.

Xu Haiyang, who was busy showing off his grilling skills, turned around and saw Shanshan. He seemed startled and threw all the cumin in his hand into the fire, causing flames to leap up on the grill.

The skewers of meat licked by the flames immediately emitted black smoke, and the smell of charred charcoal replaced the aroma of meat, making Xu Haiyang irritable.

"Ouch, it's burnt, it's burnt."

Xu Haiyang quickly moved the meat skewers aside, took out the few charred skewers, and felt an indescribable heartache.

Despite his immense anticipation, Guan Jie could only pretend he knew nothing. He kept brushing oil onto the chicken legs, turning the plate into a greasy mess.

Papaya bent down and worked, dividing the meat skewers into three plates and then sprinkling them with a layer of pepper.

Xu Haiyang brushed the powder off his hand, shrugged, and teased, "What are you doing here? The first floor is mine, the third floor is yours, the front yard is mine, the backyard and the swimming pool are yours. We keep to ourselves, and I don't think I've offended you."

Shanshan walked straight to the papaya, picked up a bamboo skewer, and bit into a piece of roasted meat, chewing it.

Xu Haiyang opened his mouth as if to say something, but then suddenly choked and swallowed his words. Finally, he glanced at the skewers in Shan Shan's hand with a smirk and said, "I was just grilling some skewers. You're not going to tell my cousin about this, are you? I sacrificed my vacation time to stay in this house for you. Don't be ungrateful."

Shan Shan smiled faintly, picked up a plate of grilled skewers, and sat down at the table next to her.

"Young Master's cooking is really good. Give me two oysters when they're done grilling. Oh, and add plenty of garlic when you grill the eggplant, and don't overcook the corn."

Shanshan crossed her legs, her raised right foot swinging rhythmically up and down, her wooden clogs dangling from her toes as she leisurely swung on the swing.

Xu Haiyang gritted his teeth, feeling that something was amiss.

He placed two grilled oysters on a plate and handed it to Shanshan, then sat down opposite her and stared at her as if he were seeing her for the first time.

"Am I seeing things? Is this Miss Shanshan, who's always going against me?"

Shanshan pulled out a napkin to wipe the grease from the corner of her mouth, crossed her arms, leaned back in her chair, and looked down at Xu Haiyang, saying, "Young Master, you're joking. Am I really that unwelcome just because I came here to ask for a barbecue?"

"Are you really just here for barbecue?"

What do you think?

"Are you trying to set me up?"

"Judging others by one's own petty standards!"

Xu Haiyang nodded.

"Okay, I welcome barbecue."

Xu Haiyang didn't believe Shanshan's words, but he couldn't just kick her out, so he reluctantly went back to continue grilling his barbecue.

Mugua brought the grilled food to the table one plate at a time, while Xu Haiyang watched Shanshan while grilling. Guan Jie assisted Xu Haiyang, occasionally handing him the barbecue seasoning so that Xu Haiyang could perform his seasoning-sprinkling skills to his heart's content.

The eggplant was covered with minced garlic, and Guan Jie placed it on the grill.

Shanshan savored the food slowly, looking as relaxed and content as if she were on vacation.

Only after the last batch was baked did Xu Haiyang reluctantly sit down, pick up a beer, and drink a glass to calm his nerves.

"Miss Shanshan's gentle and quiet demeanor makes my heart pound."

Guan Jie placed the eggplant in front of Shan Shan, and Shan Shan looked up at Guan Jie.

"Give me a bottle of wine," Shan Shan said to Guan Jie.

Guan Jie took a bottle of beer from the ice bucket, opened it, and handed it to Shan Shan. As Shan Shan took the bottle, her fingertips brushed against Guan Jie's palm, and Guan Jie's heart tightened.

A fleeting, unpredictable glint appeared in Shan Shan's eyes, which then vanished behind her eyelids.

"New here?"

Shanshan turned to Xu Haiyang and asked.

Xu Haiyang was engrossed in preparing the oysters when he looked up and gave a perfunctory "uh-huh" before continuing his work.

"Where are you from? You don't look like a local." Shan Shan said, glancing at the papaya.

Papaya chuckled shyly twice.

"The locals are exposed to the sea breeze every day, so they're all dark-skinned inside and out."

Guan Jie sat down, took a few bites of chicken leg, and drank half a glass of water before saying, "I'm from the mainland, my hometown is near Senhai City."

Xu Haiyang wiped his mouth and exclaimed as if he had discovered something new, "Did you guys notice? Zhao Ren and Shanshan's tones of voice are so similar! You two aren't from the same hometown, are you?"

"Where is Miss Shan Shan's hometown?" Guan Jie asked.

Xu Haiyang picked up a peanut and threw it at Guan Jie, giving him a wink and saying, "Is it any of your business where Shanshan's family lives?"

Guan Jie didn't say anything, he just looked at Shan Shan.

Shan Shan smiled calmly, "It's alright, Young Master, there's no need to be nervous. Amnesia is nothing to be ashamed of. My hometown? I don't remember."

Then came silence. Everyone lowered their heads and started eating, as if only eating could alleviate the sudden awkwardness.

Shanshan ate a lot, which seemed out of place with her slender figure, and she also drank two bottles of beer.

Seeing Shanshan drinking and eating barbecue, which was unusual for her, and eating so much in one go, Xu Haiyang really couldn't sit still.

"Shanshan, stop drinking. Your cousin usually doesn't let you drink more than one glass of red wine. If he finds out, he'll definitely scold me without you even having to complain." Xu Haiyang looked aggrieved and quickly gestured for Guan Jie to take the beer away.

Guan Jie had been keeping an eye on Shan Shan the whole time, and as soon as Xu Haiyang finished speaking, he quickly snatched the wine glass from Shan Shan's hand.

He saw that Shanshan liked to eat eggplant with lots of garlic, liked to drink beer by holding the bottle between three fingers, and liked to pick off the spices from the grilled sausage with a bamboo skewer.

Guan Jie drank a lot of water to suppress his emotions.

"Give me another bottle, I'm happy today." Shanshan asked for the wine without even looking at the glass.

Guan Jie and Xu Haiyang exchanged a glance, and Xu Haiyang sighed helplessly, "Fine, last bottle."

Shanshan took the beer, tilted her head back, and gulped it down in one go.

Xu Haiyang was dumbfounded. When Shanshan finished drinking and slammed the bottle down on the table with a loud bang, Xu Haiyang was so startled that he almost jumped off his chair.

"I've never been so happy before." Shan Shan smiled.

"You, you're drunk?" Xu Haiyang asked tentatively.

"Drunk? Am I drunk?"

"My dear aunt, you're going to get me killed!" Xu Haiyang stood up and looked around. Seeing that no one was around, he quickly walked over to Shanshan, leaned down and whispered in her ear, "If Dr. Chen finds out, he'll definitely tell my cousin, and then I'll be in big trouble."

"He won't know." Shan Shan gave a sinister smile.
