Full-Time Wizard: Starting with Harvesting Wheat
Chapter 60 High Wall
Olivier's smile gradually faded.
He carried their luggage on his back without saying a word.
Roy reached out and pulled Karazhan up, then pulled on the reins strapped to George with practiced ease.
If you can ride a horse at full speed on the country dirt road and even navigate between houses with ease, and that doesn't count as learning, then what does it mean to have learned?
"Could he really be a genius?" Olivier was astonished.
Especially when he saw George riding on someone else's crotch, he felt a tightness in his heart, and his hips lifted and then lowered.
"Roy, we'll let Olivier carry all the luggage, he won't be angry, will he?" Karazhan said from behind.
Do you think the horse will get tired if two people ride together?
"Of course," Karazhan replied without hesitation.
"What if we add two more pieces of luggage?"
"This..." Karazhan hesitated, "It probably can't be pulled."
“That’s right,” Roy said seriously. “If Olivier really was a stable boy before, why would he suffer himself while George suffers?”
Karazhan, unfamiliar with last night's story, was puzzled when Olivier exclaimed, "You idiot, don't mistake this story for my true deeds!"
It has a distinctly contrived feel to it.
Roy ignored him, and with a sway of his horse's head, George stepped onto Solaris Road and headed towards Dragontooth Town.
Upon arriving in Dragontooth, Olivier unloaded his heavy luggage, his back already soaked with sweat. Without lingering, he immediately rented a two-horse carriage. Driving a carriage required more skill than riding a horse, so the experienced Olivier drove it himself, with Roy riding George alongside, while Karazhan comfortably sat in the carriage, enjoying the ride.
Fortunately, Olivier was extremely familiar with the route and had a perfect grasp of the pace and distance of the journey. The three of them were able to stay in a comfortable inn for two nights while traveling, and finally arrived at Lord Histor's manor on the third day at noon.
The manor, like a giant dragon coiled on a hill, could be seen from afar, with many people already practicing in the open space.
The person in charge of receiving them recorded Roy and Karazhan's basic information and assigned them dormitories. The two dormitories were on the same floor but in different rooms, and they could see each other if they looked out of the window.
Olivier had prepared bedding beforehand, which consisted of just a few bundles of dry straw. He laid it out for the two men and instructed them not to display their iron swords, since these two swords were even better than those made by the lord. If someone with ulterior motives discovered them, it could cause unnecessary trouble.
Afterwards, he went on to say some things to keep in mind in the manor, such as that the dining hall was located on the west side; when you encounter someone dressed in fine clothes, whether they are the steward or a relative of the lord, you should bow to them, speak humbly, and not talk back; the person wearing brocade and fur is Lord Histor, and while the lord does not expect commoners to kneel before him, the etiquette must be more thorough, and so on.
It covers almost every aspect.
Having lived here for twenty years, he was well-versed in the local rules. Roy carefully noted them down, while Karazhan beside him seemed distracted, yawning repeatedly.
However, Karazhan is a smart man, and while he might overlook small things, he is generally reliable when it comes to important matters.
...That's roughly how it is.
Before leaving, Olivier specifically instructed that everyone must gather at the manor training ground first thing tomorrow morning. Most importantly, without the lord's personal permission, no one was to approach the back mountain of the manor.
"This rule was set more than ten years ago. Before that, people could freely enter and exit the back mountain."
"If anyone were to go in now, the lord would be furious," Olivier recalled. "Last time, the lord's second son only took one step into the back mountain, and the lord sent his steward to break both his legs. He still can't walk properly."
"So ruthless?" Roy's heart skipped a beat as he pondered, "What is it in the back mountain that would make Lord Histor attack even his own son?"
"It's said, just a rumor," Olivier whispered in his ear, "that there's a small house in the back hill where the lord's ex-wife is imprisoned. Back then, the lord insisted on separating from her, and she couldn't take the blow and went completely insane, so she's been kept there ever since."
He then changed the subject, denying it himself: "But this rumor is definitely false. She's just a woman; no matter how angry the lord is, he wouldn't break his own son's leg, would he?"
Roy agreed with Olivier's point of view and became more wary of the back mountain.
"I have one last question to ask." Roy pointed to the map in Olivier's arms, which the latter immediately pulled out.
"A map? Is there something wrong with this map?"
Roy unfolded the map and pointed to a section at the edge, which was blurred, but the rounded corner was still visible.
"What is this arc?"
"This?" Olivier's face showed a look of reminiscence, his expression serious.
"It's a wall, a very, very tall wall."
"?" Roy looked up.
"People say that the wall is at least 80 feet high."
"80 feet?" Roy did the math. That meant the wall was over 25 meters high.
Something's not right. Something's wrong with nine out of ten things.
Although it's not as exaggerated as a certain wall that's fifty meters high, what is the purpose of building such a wall out of nowhere?
Could there be enemies outside?
He carefully examined the four sides of the map. Besides the one he had just noticed, another corner also faintly revealed a rounded outline, which was exactly opposite the former.
Since there was also a wall directly opposite, he had to consider whether the entire Blackwater Territory was surrounded by walls.
"The area of Blackwater Territory is about 2 square kilometers." Thanks to the improvement of his mental strength, Roy's mental calculation ability has improved a lot compared to his previous life, and he came up with a result after a little thought.
If this territory is indeed completely surrounded by a high wall, then the perimeter of the wall should be around 500 kilometers.
Moreover, he quickly scanned the map and found that Blackwater Territory was surrounded by flat plains on all sides, with no mountains to rely on to reduce the amount of work required to build a wall.
In other words, this 25-meter-high city wall was built entirely out of thin air on flat ground!
With today's construction technology, this is an absolutely impossible feat!
“This certainly wasn’t built by ordinary people,” Olivier shook his head. “Even the oldest among us says that the wall was there when they were born.”
"I only saw it once before, when I was on a mission."
"There are no stairs in this wall, and very few city gates. Merchants leaving Blackwater Territory can only exit through a few gates." Olivier scratched his head. "To be honest, if it weren't for the fact that it has gates, I would suspect that it's trying to lock us up here."
"Has the lord not tried opening a new city gate?" Roy asked, puzzled.
"I've tried it." Olivier's face was also full of confusion. "Ordinary people can't even make marks on a wall. I don't know what that wall is made of. It looks like stone, but it's so much harder than stone."
The two exchanged a glance, both knowing the other's meaning.
With its extraordinary height and distance, and its incredibly solid walls, there is no doubt that this wall was created by an extraordinary being!
