Full-Time Wizard: Starting with Harvesting Wheat
Chapter 17 Team Formation
The fire in the blacksmith's shop was blazing.
With only five days to forge the ore, the apprentices naturally had to design the blueprints in a very short time before starting the smelting process.
Only a few groups would argue endlessly due to differing opinions, while Gerald, on the other hand, would stroke his chin and ponder over the charcoal drawing.
Suddenly, a small figure barged into his territory.
"Roy," Gerald said, looking up from the blueprints, "Although I've taught you swordsmanship, that doesn't mean I'll forgive you for interrupting me."
Roy met his gaze calmly: "Gerald, didn't you say you wanted to become a knight? Why are you still focusing on this test?"
"Wanting to be a knight doesn't mean I have to give up my years of blacksmithing experience. On the contrary, I can probably forge and maintain my own equipment, can't I?"
"That makes a lot of sense." Roy nodded in agreement.
"So, give me the money..."
"Wait, Gerald. I'm here to team up with you."
"Team up? You mean, you want to join... the apprentice group?" Gerald snorted as if he had heard the biggest joke in the world.
"How about we make a bet?" Roy's words carried a hint of pressure. "If I can improve your drawings, I can join your team. Master John has also agreed. By the way, I've already gotten first place in the newcomer assessment."
Is that what that old...father meant?
In his eyes, my skills are not even as good as a kid like him?
Gerald was immediately annoyed. He had been looking at the blueprints for half an hour, and although he was not very satisfied, he still couldn't find anything that could be modified.
Designing blueprints is the ultimate test of a blacksmith's basic skills and breadth of knowledge, and he didn't believe Roy could do better than him in either of those areas.
"You have one hour. If you can't figure it out, get out of here right now."
"Of course," Roy assured him.
In reality, he currently only knows how to forge weapons and equipment, and knows nothing about their overall structure.
But he happened to have a master who was an expert in this field by his side.
"Don't even think about secretly memorizing the design drawings and then asking my father." Gerald guarded Roy's escape route.
"You underestimate me a bit too much." Roy approached the blueprint that clearly depicted an iron sword and used his True Sight.
[Iron Sword Design Drawings (Standard Version)]
Material Requirements: Refined Iron
Length: 85cm
Blade width: 3.8cm
[Thickness: 0.6cm for the spine, 0.2cm for the tip]
[Center of gravity: 18cm from the hand guard]
[Optimization suggestion: Increase the thickness of the sword spine by 0.05cm...]
Just a few days ago, when Roy accidentally glanced at a blueprint on Old John's desk, he was shocked to discover that the Eye of True Sight could not only offer suggestions for modifying actions, but also provide optimization suggestions for flawed design drawings!
With such a foul-level ability, it's practically certain that his life will be worry-free from now on, as long as he can extend his lifespan in the remaining ten months.
Half an hour later, Roy selected a few optimization suggestions and explained them to Gerald one by one, without involving any obscure knowledge of forging, so as not to arouse Gerald's suspicion.
Although his suggestions for improvement were concise, Gerrard found them to be very reasonable upon closer examination.
"This modification will increase the sword's resilience... and here, if we can shift the sword's center of gravity, it will definitely improve the flexibility of slashing..."
Clearly, Roy's improvements had completely resonated with him.
This drawing has undergone an unimaginable transformation!
Could it be that this person's forging skills are truly no less than mine?
This was the first time such a thought had crossed Gerald's mind.
He coughed stiffly. If he kicked Roy out now, he would have to abandon the revised blueprints. Otherwise, if he produced an iron sword that looked exactly like Roy's design, he would definitely be ridiculed.
"I can't give up on this design..." Seeing Roy's ambiguous smile, clearly convinced of his decision, Gerald sighed softly.
"What do you want? To seize the old man's fortune? To humiliate me, the heir, in front of others?"
"I would never have such a sinister thought." Roy rolled his eyes. "Gerald, I lost my parents."
"so what?"
"So I'm very poor, I don't even know where my next meal will come from," he said, spreading his hands. "I need money."
Gerald paused for a moment, finally realizing that Roy's goal was actually the most mundane thing in this assessment—the silver coin reward for the top three.
His previous wariness of Roy had made him forget that the guy was an orphan.
"And one more thing," Roy said, extending a hand with a kind smile, "I think we can build a wonderful friendship."
Gerald felt nauseous at the mere mention of the word "friend".
But he still hesitated for a moment.
The reason was simple: the finished product of this sword was simply too attractive to him.
His lips trembled incessantly, yet he still slowly reached out his hand.
He grasped it.
……
"What do we do on the first day?"
Unexpectedly, this was Roy's first sentence after forming a united front.
"You didn't know?" Gerald was greatly surprised.
"Hey, I've only been here a few days, how could I possibly know the detailed weapon forging steps? This forging will naturally be led by you, buddy." Roy chuckled and patted the 16-year-old boy on the shoulder, making Gerald feel as if he was facing not a child three years younger than him, but a wise and experienced older brother.
"...smelt the ore, and then produce rough blanks."
Upon hearing this, Roy squatted down in front of the fire, his skin radiating intense heat.
"I'll leave the smelting of the ore to you; I'll learn how. As for the rough blanks, the two of you can work together to hammer them. Wow, you're really lucky to have the top rookie in the group back you up."
A "well" appeared on Gerald's forehead, but he swallowed his anger and quickly picked out the few with the highest purity from the ore pile, threw them into the furnace fire, and then started the bellows.
The high-temperature melting process takes 4-6 hours. Gerard worked for three hours, and then Roy took over.
At first, his technique was a little clumsy, but within a few minutes, the bellows was being pulled quickly and steadily.
Coordinating his breathing with his breath didn't put any pressure on him; instead, it gave him the illusion of a leisurely life.
During this time, Gerrard brought him a bowl of mashed potatoes, a rare boiled egg, and finally a bowl of bean soup with oil floating on top.
"It's a shame there's boiled egg but no soy sauce." Roy had a big appetite and swallowed an egg in two bites, looking like he wanted more.
These eggs weren't fresh; the whole egg exuded a slightly stale smell, like aged wine that had been brewing in a cellar for several years.
But Roy knew he had no right to be picky now.
He glanced at Gerrard, then chuckled and patted his belly.
"Tsk." Gerald recalled what he had said about "not knowing where his next meal would come from," cursed under his breath, and handed over the eggs.
……
After six hours of smelting, the iron block in the furnace turned a bright orange-yellow. Gerald quickly took it out and, together with Roy, picked up a hammer.
"hurry up!"
"Smash it!"
