Wizard: I have ten trillion nanomachines

Chapter 70 Recruiting Office

For half a month, it did not cause the slightest disturbance at the Rogue Encampment, and the streets of the Second Ring Road remained bustling with activity.

Following his memory, Luo Kunlun returned to the Golden Point Club. Pushing open the door, the familiar hustle and bustle rushed towards him, but the person sitting behind the counter was no longer the sinister young man in black, Qiru, but an old man with gray hair and a face full of wrinkles, with the nameplate on his chest engraved with the three words "Volga".

"I'm here to repay the loan." Luo Kunlun walked to the counter and slapped a neat stack of prepaid cards on the table, exactly four thousand one hundred points, no more and no less.

Volga lifted his cloudy eyelids, slowly reaching out to count, his fingertips dry yet nimble.

"What are you here for?" he asked casually.

"Loan repayment."

"Oh." As he spoke, he pulled out the contract that Luo Kunlun had signed back then from the drawer.

When Volga saw the loan date and amount on the contract, his cloudy eyes widened suddenly. He checked it several times, muttering, "This is weird. It's been paid off in just half a month? The principal, plus the interest for early repayment, is all paid off."

Luo Kunlun raised an eyebrow: "What, is there a repayment deadline in the agreement?"

"No, not at all." Volga shook his head and placed the contract on the verification table.

The light flashed, the contract gradually dimmed, and finally turned into a pile of ashes.

This signifies the formal termination of the loan agreement.

Volga put away the game card and waved his hand. "Alright, the formalities are done. You can go now."

Luo Kunlun didn't turn to leave, but asked again, "Where did that Qiru guy who handled my paperwork go?"

"Chiru? I think there is such a person." Volga didn't even look up, continuing to count the cards. "He left a while ago. I heard he went to the Spire and is working for the adults of the Twelve-Man Group. He's finally made it."

"Of course, if you're unlucky, you might end up being a guinea pig."

The wizarding world is truly unpredictable.

After asking the questions, Luo Kunlun turned and left.

The journey went more smoothly than expected.

Luo Kunlun had assumed that the club would deliberately make excuses, or find a pretext to charge extra interest, or even deny the matter and directly withhold the points card.

After all, the rules of the wizarding world are based on the survival of the fittest.

But then I thought, the camp and clubhouse are backed by the tower. If they have no credibility at all, who would be willing to use point cards for transactions?

Violent suppression alone will not work; if all those who create value and handle miscellaneous tasks are killed, the wizards will also be unable to enjoy any of the conveniences.

After leaving the Golden Point Club, Luo Kunlun headed straight for the recruitment office that He Lai had mentioned.

The camp's recruitment office was less of an office and more of a heavily guarded prison.

The thick stone walls were high, and there were cyborgs in black armor guarding the entrance.

Those imprisoned there were either homeless people wandering the streets, or warriors who had committed crimes, or low-ranking wizard apprentices who had gone bankrupt; all of them were ashen-faced and lifeless.

As Luo Kunlun approached, he heard a shout. A clerk in a gray uniform with a fierce face stood there.

At this moment, the other party was leading a group of ragged but physically able-bodied homeless men towards them, holding a black medicine bottle in their hand, and speaking in a fierce tone:

"You bunch of lowly bastards, listen up! Swallow this medicine, and anyone who dares to resist, I'll kill them on the spot!"

These people were either sent to do hard labor or became cannon fodder on the battlefield.

These pills contain tiny parasites that burrow into the internal organs after ingestion. If the parasites harbor any disloyalty or attempt to escape, they will devour the organs, making life worse than death.

It is a cheap means of control.

As Lei Da, the person in charge, handed out the medicine and cursed under his breath, he escorted the homeless man towards the jail. He bumped into Luo Kunlun and immediately frowned: "What are you doing here? This is the conscription office, get out of the way!"

"I heard they're recruiting soldiers here, and they can go to the alien world that the Four Elements Tower invaded five years ago," Luo Kunlun said calmly.

"You want to enlist?" Radar looked at Luo Kunlun from head to toe as if he had heard the biggest joke in the world, his eyes full of disbelief.

He was well aware of the dangers of that other world, and recently the indigenous resistance had become increasingly fierce, with some major actions even underway.

Although they were as insignificant as ants to formal wizards, the natives were definitely formidable opponents to wizard apprentices.

A fully-fledged wizard doesn't care how many apprentices die, just as an apprentice doesn't care how many mortals die.

After all, every four to five years, two to three thousand talented individuals are selected from various camps and sent to the tower.

However, most of those gifted individuals would die afterward for various reasons, such as going on missions or competing for resources.

Even their bodies are collected by special personnel after death...

In short, formal wizards don't care how many apprentices die, but the apprentices stationed in that other world care a great deal about their lives.

Even the Black Beast Legion's cyborg corps had a lot of them transferred out, and nine out of ten of the cannon fodder sent there never returned. Yet some people actually volunteered to come to them.

"Okay, no, you borrowed money and can't pay it back, so you're trying to avoid it this way, right?" Radar realized something and quickly suppressed his smile.

"I'm warning you, kid, you're not the first person to have this idea. There were others who thought the same way before, and they were sent straight to the core laboratory. When they came out, they were just a lump of flesh."

"With the club's capabilities, they'll know what you've done just by having been in the camp!"

"Don't worry, I'm debt-free. I just finished paying off my loan at the club."

As he spoke, Luo Kunlun took out the ashes that the contract had turned into.

Radar readily agreed, saying that as long as there were no problems, it would be fine.

He pulled a medicine bottle from his pocket, poured out a black pill, and handed it over, saying, "Take this pill, and you'll be considered enlisted."

He was eager to send more people over so he could report back to the wizard apprentices stationed in the other world; as for the man's life or death, that was none of his concern.

Luo Kunlun took the pill and swallowed it without hesitation. The pill tasted slightly sweet, and the outer shell quickly dissolved on his tongue, revealing a tiny white parasite inside, about to burrow deeper.

But the moment it moved, it was instantly annihilated by the nanomachines that had been lurking inside Luo Kunlun's body, turning into dust without leaving a trace.

This cheap method of control was useless to him.

Seeing that he obediently took the medicine, Lei Da nodded in satisfaction: "Come with me to register your information. Perfect timing, we can set off first thing tomorrow morning."

Luo Kunlun followed Lei Da into the prison—no, the conscription office.

When the homeless people saw him, their eyes were filled with numbness and incomprehension; they clearly could not understand why someone would willingly step onto this deadly path.
