Nascent Soul Rebirth: Starting as a Wizard
Chapter 78 Malcolm
After all, knights are known for their resilience.
More importantly, once the life seed is activated and they enter combat mode, their bone strength becomes comparable to refined steel.
On the battlefield, unless faced with a heavy blow from a behemoth or a large species, true fractures are rare; injuries are mostly concentrated in the skin, flesh, and internal organs.
Therefore, once the initial hemostasis, wound cleaning, removal of foreign objects, and suturing of blood vessels are achieved, the self-repairing ability of the life seed can be stimulated, and the injured person can quickly regain mobility.
What these apprentices are meant to do is to perform the most basic battlefield support – transforming fatal open wounds into “internal problems” that the knight’s body can handle on its own.
The rest is left to that inhuman, tenacious will to live.
In his previous life, Solo was a regular at fighting his way through the martial arts world of the Xuanhuang Realm, where licking blood from the edge of a knife was commonplace.
He learned some basic surgical skills from the old man in the mountain village: how to quickly clean a wound, how to stop bleeding with a red-hot knife, how to suture a wound with mulberry bark thread, and how to determine if a wound is "clean".
These techniques are crude, but practical.
The combination of the magical energy of this world and inferior life potions is sufficient to deal with most of the knights' common external injuries.
More importantly, Solo believed that these apprentices were not stupid.
Those selected by the Emerald Academy, even if only as crash-training apprentices to be deployed on the battlefield, possess the most basic learning abilities and intelligence.
If the war had not been so sudden, they would have spent several years studying systematically in the academy, which would have included basic anatomy and surgery.
He could easily teach these apprentices some simple but crucial surgical skills: how to identify and remove foreign objects embedded in the muscle.
How to clean wounds contaminated with rock toxins, how to perform basic vascular ligation, and how to assess the urgency of the injury.
This knowledge, combined with their existing energy manipulation abilities, is enough to elevate the level of treatment from "perfunctory survival" to "true healing."
Only when the limestone production base is truly operating stably and efficiently, with a sound defense system and reliable medical and logistical support, can this be achieved.
Only when production is not frequently interrupted can Solo be freed from these endless trivial matters.
He needs time and energy to investigate other things.
Two days later, after processing the morning patrol report, Solo headed to the area where the outer wizarding class was located.
Malcolm's office is located on the top floor of the production line control tower, accessible via a narrow, greasy spiral iron staircase.
The room was filled with the pungent smell of engine oil, ozone, and some kind of cheap energy crystal that had been heated.
The walls were covered with complex pipeline diagrams and rune array sketches, and various semi-finished energy cores and testing instruments were piled on the workbench.
Malcolm sat behind a workbench, using a slender crystal probe to examine a palm-sized metal rune plate with densely etched patterns on its surface.
The probe tip glowed with a steady blue light, moving slowly along the texture and emitting a faint buzzing sound.
Hearing footsteps, he didn't look up, but his brows furrowed almost imperceptibly.
"We need to discuss the cooperation between knights and wizards in defensive battles," Solo said, getting straight to the point without any pleasantries.
Malcolm paused for half a second with the probe in his hand, then continued moving.
A few seconds later, he raised his head, his gaze passing over the greasy lenses of his glasses as he looked at Solo, his eyes filled with undisguised coldness and aloofness.
"Cooperation? The Knights are responsible for base protection and security, while the Wizards are responsible for production line maintenance and material production."
Each has its own duties, and the boundaries are clearly defined.
I don't see the need for cooperation, Commander Solo.
His voice was steady, with the distinctive tone of a wizard apprentice who regarded knowledge and skill as a privilege.
"During this morning's routine patrol, two knights were stung by stone scorpions lurking at the edge of the north mine," Solo stated calmly, presenting the facts.
"At that time, three of your apprentices were collecting energy samples at the entrance of that mine, less than thirty meters away from the injured knight. They did not offer any help, nor did they even stop what they were doing."
"That was a dereliction of duty by the knights' guards." Malcolm lowered his head again, his gaze returning to the runeboard, his tone flat.
"If the patrol routes were planned properly, the security was tight enough, and the reconnaissance methods were effective, the Stone Scorpion would have had no chance to sneak up to that location and launch an attack. The responsibility for the security loophole lies with the Knights, not the Wizards."
Solo took two steps forward, his boots making a soft sound on the metal floor.
He stared at Malcolm's lowered head and said slowly, "Then, the next rock creature impact—they'll come eventually—if there's even one."
Or perhaps a few of them broke through the Knights' defenses, rushed into the production base, and stormed up to a production line that was in operation…
He paused to make sure every word was clearly heard by the other person.
Malcolm paused again with the probe in his hand, this time for an even longer period.
"The production line has come to a standstill, even if it's just a few hours of maintenance," Solo continued, his voice lower but more penetrating.
"When Master Thane inquires about the cause and assigns responsibility... whose explanation do you think he'll listen to? Will he listen to my explanation of 'the wizard apprentice disobeying security orders,' or your explanation of 'the Knights' inadequate protection'?"
Malcolm's fingers tightened slightly as he gripped the probe.
He didn't look up, but Solo could see the muscles in his jawline were taut.
"I will make sure all my apprentices are evacuated behind the security perimeter after an attack warning is issued." Malcolm's voice remained calm, though he made a slight concession. "We have established security procedures."
"You can't be sure," Solo interrupted decisively.
"Just like I can't guarantee that I can keep every single rock creature out of the wall every time."
This is a battlefield, Malcolm, not a structured training ground in academia.
Unexpected events will always happen, and loopholes will always appear. No contingency plan can cover all possibilities 100%.
The only difference is that when accidents happen, we use the excuse of "each doing their own job" to shirk responsibility and suffer greater losses.
It's best to prepare in advance, coordinate responses, and minimize losses.
Malcolm remained silent.
He still didn't look up, but the probe had completely stopped moving.
Only the muffled roar of the production line in the distance and the faint electrical hum of the energy instruments remained in the room.
Solo waited ten seconds without saying anything more. He turned and walked towards the stairwell.
Just as his foot stepped onto the first step—
"...How do you want to cooperate?" Malcolm's voice came from behind, dry and filled with suppressed reluctance.
Solo stopped walking without turning around: "Three days from now, I will convene a meeting with representatives of the Knights and the outer wizards. We will discuss the details then."
